Chapters thirty-nine through forty-one of Genesis chronicle a portion of the life of Joseph, the eleventh, and most favored, son of Jacob. “The book of Genesis is an account of the creation of the universe (Genesis 1-2), the origins of human communities (Genesis 3-11), and the beginnings of the people set apart by God (Genesis 12-50)” (Hauer and Young 67). The Joseph story begins in chapter thirty-seven, and spans nearly fourteen full chapters; the book ends, in chapter fifty, with the death of Joseph. The narrative of Joseph’s life is well crafted and highly detailed. It is, in fact, the most comprehensive narrative in the book of Genesis. The story flows, from beginning to end as a novel would. “Unique, too, is the somewhat secular mold in which the biography is cast. The miraculous or supernatural is conspicuously absent” (Sarna 211). Although God is mentioned, as a presence, he never overtly presents himself as he did with the many of the heroes that came before Joseph. The ending chapters of Genesis are a coming of age story; the tale of a boy, becoming a man.
Survey of the Three Chapters:
In chapter thirty-nine of Genesis, Joseph was taken, by a group of Ishmaelites, to Egypt to be sold as a slave. He was bought by a guard captain named Potiphar. Potiphar saw that Joseph was blessed, by God, so he made him the head servant of the house. Berlin and Brettler suggest in “The Jewish Study Bible” that like Potiphar, Joseph’s father’s preference of Joseph may have been an unconscious manifestation of God’s favor toward him. Now, Potiphar had a wife who was very attracted to Joseph. She frequently asked him to lie with her. Joseph always refused. It would have been a betrayal of his master, but more importantly a sin against God...

... the man. He worked hard for his master and took pride in his work, even though he was forced to be there. He also refused to betray his master, regardless of temptation. In the subsequent chapters he did his best to help people with his gift, while always giving credit to God. Joseph is an outstanding protagonist.
During the week after I first saw “Joseph”, I picked my tattered King James Version from the shelf, and read Genesis in its entirety. I did not experience any profound biblical revelations, nor did I feel drawn toward God. However, I did find myself appreciating the book, itself, much more. I strive to be a compassionate person, one who respects the personal and religious freedoms of others. Understanding the Bible better, makes me more equipped to do so. In a lot of ways, the people around me have Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to thank for that.

That evening, Joseph knew his son was awake, “but was not sure whether [he] had been happy or just tired. He could not ask him, even then.” Joseph always had troubles talking to his son, but hoped that his actions had made an impact on his son, leaving him a time to remember and enjoy; a time he was happy. The biblical account of Joseph perfectly encapsulated the truth of God’s sovereignty and His complete control over all circumstances. Throughout the story, Joseph found himself in many horrendous situations, but he acknowledged how they were all overseen by the Lord and were ultimately used to serve His greater purpose. While most westerners know the story of Joseph as a passage from the end of the book of Genesis in the Bible or the Torah, understanding the story and its intricacies in sura 12 of the Qur’an proves equally important. Joseph’s story in Genesis emphasizes his personal abilities and God rewarding him and his people’s loyalty and faith amidst hardship. The Qur’an takes the same plot and enforces the theme of monotheism and Joseph’s prophetic role in its spread. The Qur’an’s interpretation serves as a more influential religious text in the context of its body of belief, whereas the Biblical story of Joseph, with its thematically intriguing story line and embellishments, comparatively serves a greater literary purpose. By reading and understanding both passages, one can gain a clearer knowledge of what is regarded as important to the Jewish, Christian, and Islamic faiths.
Before his brothers sold him off, he was immature and would constantly rat his brothers out to his father instead of trying to work things out with them. Being thrown into a horrible situation, he was forced to swiftly mature and learn survival skills. For example, when he was sold to Potiphar and his wife, he quickly became the household superintendent. He realized he needed to be diligent in his duties in order to survive, and his determination eventually brought him to become the right hand man to the Pharoah of Egypt. All this time, he had slowly but surely been letting go of the previous anger he held towards his brothers; when he saw them again, the anger swelled back up in him and he put his brothers through harrowing trials in order to have them repent for their sins. Reminded of the previous struggles he had overcome, Joseph eventually showed them benevolence. Towards the end of the story, he revealed his true identity to his brothers, and they immediately apologized and begged for his forgiveness. Joseph, having moved on from his previous betrayals, says, “Besides, although you intended me harm, God intended it for good, so as to bring about the present result- the survival of many people” (Genesis 50.23). The Book of Genesis was the primary book that in part made up the Old Testament. It is the book of beginnings. To some, it is an account of history. To others, it is seen as premiere metaphorical message regarding the creation of the world and early man, that portrays religious morals people try to follow no matter the time period The Book of Genesis is studied in. Through faith and reason regarding nature, humans, and the divine, The Book of Genesis poses one conclusive theme. This is that without God, man and nature are completely inadequate and incomplete. Without God, there would be nothing at all, but with God, you can achieve the greatest pleasures in life.
After reading Milton’s Lost Paradise and The Book of Genesis, I noticed some similarities and many differences. Although many of the characters names and personalities were similar, the viewpoints in which these stories were written differed. For example, In Milton’s lost paradise the reader is able to actually see what the characters are thinking and their reasons for doing things, whereas in The Book of Genesis the characters actions are unpredictable. Another difference I noticed was in the Bible the source of sin begins straight from the birth of Eve and the reasons for the creation of man and woman. While in Milton’s Lost Paradise the author starts from the establishment of Satan “Who first seduc'd them to that foul revolt? Th' infernal Serpent; he it was, whose guile Stird up with Envy and Revenge, deceiv'd , The Mother of Mankind, what time his Pride Had cast him out from Heav'n, with all his Host Of Rebel Angels” (33-38). The author is referencing the source of sin to Satan, “Milton accepts, and insists on the challenge that the fall must be made believable—and acceptable—by a dramatic representation addressed to the human reasoning” (Bowers 264-273). These two stories illustrate humanity and God’s formation of earth but in contrastive ways.
In the beginning of the text, the author is able to show Moses human faults when he backs down from God’s challenge of being a leader, yet finds the strength to eventually lead his people and convey God’s message through his own actions. He goes a long way in proving his effectiveness as a leader. He begins to accept the blame of others and overcomes all of his own personal flaws because he is motivated by the responsibilities that have been given to him.
