In Genesis 19, we read a very interesting but sad story about Lot and the men of Sodom. Sodom was an extremely sinful city that God was about to rain His judgment. Lot was the only righteous man in Sodom but it is strange that Lot would protect his guests from sexual molestation but readily offered his two virgin daughters to be molested by the wicked men of Sodom. Even in this generation we read, hear and see similar things happening around us. A parent would under fear, pressure or even no pressure prostitute his or her child. Sometimes it is a husband prostituting his wife. Lots daughters would have been raped by the mob and would have probably resulted to their death. This kind of act destroys the family foundation, gates and releases
a divine curse. It happened that Lot's guests were angels though he did not know it. The first verse of this chapter gives us important information. It says that "Lot sat in the gate of Sodom" that is where he met the two angels who appeared in the form of men and invited them to his home. In the same chapter 19, from verse 30 is recorded another sad story about family foundation and gate. This time it was not an act of parents but that of their grown children. Lot’s daughters who survived the destruction of Sodom plotted to make their father drunk so they could sleep with him. Without restraint Lot's daughters vile acts brought devastation.

Television, movies, and music depict acts of adultery and the loss of sexual innocence as favorable acts rather than being indecent. Steinbeck uses the biblical story of Cain and Abel in East of Eden to show us that we do not have set fate. Steinbeck uses the Hebrew word “timshel”, which means “thou mayest”, to suggest that man has the ability to choose good or evil. “Timshel” affects the characters in East of Eden such as Cal and Aron and their choice of overcoming good or evil. Steinbeck sees this novel as his most important work, and he uses it as a way to state his personal ideas concerning mankind:“The free, exploring mind of the individual human is the most valuable thing in the world. He portrays the “C” characters to be connected to Cain, such as Charles and Cal and the “A” characters to be connected to Abel, such as Aron and Adam.

Discrimintaion and equality in society is faced amongst people every day. One certain subject that seems to get most of this attention is whether or not homosexual couples should be able to adopt. Same sex couples should be able to adopt children for many reasons. Children that are raised by same sex parents are predominantly taught to be more open minded, have a greater sense of tolerance, and are thought of to be role models for equality in relationships and life. Most would say that these children will face issues regarding their parents sexual orientation, but this is not so. Children of same sex parents have studied to show very few differences in achievement, mental health, and social function as a child that is raised in a heterosexual household. Same sex parents will allow their child to express themselves through different talents and other attributes that there child seems to be indulged in. These children are often showing more loving, nurturing ,and outgoing behaviors that is exposed to them through gay parenting.

Kurt Vonnegut’s novel Slaughterhouse-Five, uses the biblical allusion of Lot’s wife looking back on the destroyed cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to parallel the story of Billy Pilgrim during the war and his experience after, when he returns to the United States. Although the reference is brief, it has profound implications to the portrayal of America during World War II, especially the bombing of Dresden. Although Lot’s wife’s action dooms her to turn into a pillar of salt, the narrator emphasizes her choice to indicate the importance of being compassionate and having hindsight. Ultimately, Slaughterhouse-Five critiques the American social attitude to disregard the unjust nature of its actions in World War II. Furthermore, Vonnegut’s novel explicates this by elucidating the horrors of war—especially in regard to the massacre of innocence, how it leaves the soldiers stagnant when they return home, and leaves them empty with an American Dream that cannot be fulfilled. In order to combat violence, the novel stresses that one must hold human life to a higher value and be compassionate towards others; America must acknowledge its mistakes so that the soldiers who fought and died for her so that the soldiers may move on.
