General Norman Schwarzkopf has been named by many as the all time favorite war hero and leader, coming in a close tie to General Dwight D. Eisenhower (Scarborough, 2012). In fact, many people fondly labeled him as “Stormin’ Norman” because of his strategic air assault against Iraq (Scarborough, 2012). However, the men and women in his command referred to him as “The Bear” due to aggressiveness and persistence (Kruse, 2012). The award-winning novel by Stephen Ambrose, Band of Brothers: Easy Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne from Normandy to Hitler's Eagle's Nest, discusses one of the greatest examples of mission command in the form of 1st Lieutenant Richard Winters and his role in the Brecourt Manor Assault. This battle is a textbook example of how to fight against a superior enemy force that outnumbered the unit by four times as much. Facing overwhelming odds with just 16 paratroopers against over 60 German Soldiers, 1LT Winters nevertheless prevails and succeeds in achieving his objective while minimizing casualties to just three Soldiers lost. Looking back further into the American Revolution, the Battle of Bunker Hill on the American side is one of the earliest examples of Mission Command under the command of COL William Prescott.

In WWII leading up to the battle of Bastogne, Patton’s leadership style and keen ability to continuously assess the battlefield enabled him to visualize and articulate to his subordinates what his vision was. The innate ability of Patton choosing the right subordinates to help lead his 3rd Army enabled him to have great success on the battlefield. Many things went right for Patton, most of all was his successful implementation of mission command. He was able to understand quickly his environment and formulate a successful plan and seamlessly articulate it to his subordinate officers. To write this book the author, John Toland, had to devote 15 years researching different stories from all sides of the war. He studied war memoirs, interviewed war veterans, and read military documents. While doing this he focused on both the allied and axis forces to truly understand both sides of the story and be able to write such a descriptive and accurate piece of work. This research was used in the book to describe the unlikely victory of the Americans over the Germans during the “Battle of the Bulge”.

Each of the numerous leadership styles can be beneficial if utilized in an appropriate means. I have chosen three leaders and their unique leadership styles to discuss in this paper. The unique styles that will be discussed are situational leadership, transformational leadership, and laissez-faire leadership. I will also discuss each leader’s approaches, their fundamental leadership principles, and how each leader used their style within their profession.
A defined chain of command with equal representation from all the armed services coupled with standardized clear communication and training throughout the branches, results in an elite fighting force with endless capabilities. Efficiency is the major goal behind Joint Warfare and so long as the clear channels of communication throughout the services hold true, this goal is attainable. This efficiency, though almost impossible to fully achieve, was seen during Desert Storm. There is a prodigious need for leaders – authentic leaders to facilitate the process of building relationships and resolving conflicts in a more effective manner as affirmative models in the capacities served. Leadership of all kinds has been coming under unprecedented attack. The inability to effectively resolve conflict is an issue impacting the relationships of past and current leaders of all realms. Opposed to using conflicts and/or crises as an opportunity to rise above the issues – becoming solution-oriented beacons for others, leaders either inappropriately fight back; hope that time will heal all wounds (conflicts); ignore the issue(s) at hand; or make unnecessary changes that further damages relationships and credibility.
Throughout life one faces many situations therefore coming into contact with a variety of different people, in turn making relationships that one can learn from. It is from the opportunities we have working with others that we form our own personal leadership traits. There are many different leadership styles and over the course of the many opportunities that I have to serve as a leader, I have not only developed, but formed my personal leadership style. Norman Schwarzkopf was a leader that always maintained his presence, character and intellect in every military operation he was involved in. He learned very quickly as a combat commander that in order for his men to fight, he had to be an example of what right looked like. He gave his subordinates broad orders with a clear intent and enabled them to develop and conduct their missions. He would correct subordinates when necessary, but would never attack them, only attack the problem that he saw. He was a man of integrity who consistently followed his moral character instilled in him by his father. He is a great example of accomplished military officer and his actions and leadership abilities should be studied by all who
