Many people tend to think fats are bad for us, but essential fats are required for our survival. Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are fatty acids that humans, and other animals, must ingest because the body requires them for good health, but can not synthesize them. The two main types of essential acids are omega 3 and omega 6. Omega 3 helps our organs function properly and also helps with cell activity such as carrying oxygen and red blood cell activity. A lack of omega 3 can lead to blood clots, memory problems, vision problems, irregular heartbeat, and issues with the function of the immune system. Foods that contain omega 3 include flaxseed oil, walnuts, sesame seeds, spinach, salmon, and tuna. Omega 6 helps the body clear skin diseases, fight cancer, and treat arthritis. Most people actually get enough omega 6 in their diet, but they ruin it by eating food high in sugar and trans fat. Those factors lower omega 6 in the body and can cause harm. Omega 6 can be found in flaxseed oil, pistachios, chicken, and olive …show more content…

Fatty acids such as linoleic acid, linolenic acid and arachidonic acid are known as essential fatty acid because they cannot be synthesized in the body so must be supplied in the food. Human being lacks the ability to introduce double bonds in fatty acids beyond carbons 9 & 10. About 20 different fatty acids are synthesized from the two essential fatty acids linoleic acid and linolenic acid. Omega three fatty acid is synthesized from linolenic acid and omega six fatty acid is synthesized from linolic acid.
“If we could give every individual the right amount of nourishment and exercise not too little not too much, we would have food the safest way of health” (Barasi.E.M, 2003). This essay is going to discuss on the important of six essential nutrients in human body. According to PosnerB.M (1998), he define essential nutrients as a nutrients that the body cannot synthesize on its own-or not to an adequate amount and must be provided by the died. Oxford dictionary (2009), also define essential nutrients as are those nutrients that are required by the body and cannot be synthesise in the adequate amount to meet requirement, so must be provided by the diet. Essential nutrients are those found to be essential to human life and optimal function, Williams.M. H (2006).There are six main type of nutrients used to maintain body health. They are carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals and water. They must be in balance for the body to function properly.
The Omega-3's are widely recognized for their role in heart health. Not only do these fatty acids help healthy hearts, they also benefit those with cardiovascular disease. Research has proved atherosclerotic plaque reduces with consistent consumption of omega-3's. Further, incidences of irregular heartbeats decline with these fatty acids; high blood pressure has been known to slightly drops as well.
The macronutrients a person consumes are what the body needs to function properly. They are the nutrients from protein, fats and carbohydrates that make up a person's daily nutrition. The amount of macronutrients and ratio of one to the other is what people alter to achieve a certain result. For example, lowering carbs and fats while amping up on protein is what body builders do to gain more muscle. Runners will lower protein while increasing carbs to give themselves a rush for a big races.
Nutrients are substances that are required for our body in order to grow and become healthy. The nutrients in our food are classified as proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and fibers. Proteins are found in food like cereals, bread, milk, and cheese, which provide growth and repair parts of our body. Fats can be found in margarine, butter, cheese, and snack foods. They act as a layer to keep out the cold and to protect us against injuries, but consuming too much isn’t healthy for the body. Carbohydrates can be found in breads, rice, and pasta, and is one of the sources that provide us with energy. During the five days of food log, the worst nutritionally food I consumed was 2 slices of cheese pizza. The pizza contains the most amounts of fat, carbohydrate, sodium, cholesterol, calcium, and iron. Fat in pizza is saturated, meaning it can raise the level of cholesterol in the blood which can increase the chance of having heart diseases. It’s also a primary risk factor of cardiovascular diseases, which is found to be that half of all men and a third of women will get at a time in their life. On the other hand, the best food nutritionally was Macaroni and tomato sauce. It contains macaroni, shrimps, corn, fres tomato, tomato sauce, mushrooms, and fish. This meal is complete, meaning it has all the nutrients my body requires in a meal, which is protein from fish and shrimps, fats from the oil being used, carbohydrates form the macaroni, and vitamins, minerals, and fibers from tomatoes and corns. Eating tomatoes, even though it’s only a part of the meal, is a healthy choice because it wards of cancer, especially lung and stomach cancer. Furthermore, tomatoes reduce the risk of heart diseases because they contain niacin, f...

I have always been intrigued by the field of science and that is the reason I pursued the field of Biochemistry for my undergraduate studies. How The Human body works and the different determinants that can affect one's health or a community as a whole have always been captivating to me. I wanted to emerge in a profession that is beneficial for me, my community, and the world I live in. I came to realize through various science courses and health care experiences that a career in health care was the best path for me to outreach my community and the world.
When families are unable to eat nutritious food, they are lacking the minimum daily vitamins and mineral requirements. The adequate amounts of carbohydrates, B vitamins, minerals, folate, and water is crucial for improving mood (Dunne, 2012). Complex carbohydrates such as legumes and some vegetables are broken down slowly to provide energy over time to help stabilize blood sugar levels and stabilize mood (Dunne, 2012). Simple carbohydrates such as baked goods, candy, and fruit drinks are broken down more quickly and have very little nutrient value. Niacin is a B vitamin that can be obtained from meat, fish, legumes, and milk. A deficiency in niacin may result in confusion, insomnia, and depression (Dunne, 2012). Folate can be found in enriched bread and grains. People with a deficiency in folate are more likely to be diagnosed with depression (Dunne, 2012). Selenium sources include fish, eggs, and whole grains. A deficiency in selenium influences mood, such as anxiety and depression (Dunne, 2012). Water is essential and a deficit can cause dehydration.
