In my essay I’ve decided to examine how gender is presented on stage in Miller’s “Death of a Salesman” and Churchill’s “Cloud Nine”. More specifically, I will be looking at how both playwrights express the gender role of patriarchy in their male characters, Willy Loman and Clive. Gender, unlike the biological differentiation of sex, is a social condition that forms the basis of being a “male” or “female”. The role of patriarchy, as described by (renown feminist) Gerda Lerner, is “the manifestation and institutionalization of male dominance over women and children in the family” (1). This identity issue has since become very popular with play writers of sexual and gender politics in theatre, including Miller and Churchill.
Domination of the household is considered a crucial element of patriarchy. Both, “Cloud Nine” and “Death of a Salesmen” present this subject but in different manners.
In “Cloud Nine” Clive introduces himself at the beginning of the play as “…a father to the natives here and father to my family so dear”. The repeated use of the word “father” when mentioning his family and work in colonial Africa creates an alternative definition. Clive associates the word as a title or duty and because of this he dominates his family and work life in very similar ways. In the opening song, “Come Gather Sons of England” I feel the family should be marching in a straight line behind Clive and only step forward as he introduces them. Doing this would not only showcase his power to the audience but also show them how he commands his family like a general in an army rather than a loving husband and father. However, Willy mentions that his own father died when he was “three or four years old” leaving almost all of his life without a masculine figure to look up to. This leads me to agree with Neil Carson, in his book “Arthur Miller”. He says that, “Willy’s determination to give such a strong guidance to his son is a result in lack of such guidance in his own life.”
Both Clive and Willy make their son’s life miserable due to the expectation that they want to be exactly like them. But, Willy’s actions are perhaps not as intentional because his own father died and so is instead guided by society. Clive, on the hand is purposely chooses to be ignorant about what his own son wants.

It is stated by Standage that, “Sandage believes Willy Loman was a success. But the message of the play, he says, is that “if you level off, you have to give up. You might as well not live”” (Baird 25). This is quite ironic because all Willy does is push to be successful and he when he can’t he puts expects his son’s to follow through so he gives up. He constantly reminds them, “the man who makes an appearance in the business world, the man who creates personal interest, is the man who gets ahead” (Miller 67). This is also ironic because Willy is the man who creates personal interest in the business world, but when everyone passes away he is left with nothing but the past to remember. This false reality that Willy creates for Biff brings on the conflicts between the father and son duo due to the fact that Biff fails as a result of the way he was raised. Throughout the play, Willy has hallucinations of his brother Ben, who left Willy when he was young, “Well, I was just a baby, of course, only three or four years old,” (Miller 47), and the man later offered to take Willy with him, but Willy had a dream “There’s a man eighty-four years old-” (Miller 86) and he felt that he was going to accomplish that dream. “Willy retreats into a dream world consisting of his roseate recollections of the past and of fantasies,” (Hadomi), he hallucinates often, and this is a better way of saying he’s delusional. In a flashback Willy has, it is shown that Willy jokes about Charley’s son, Bernard, a “nerd” who helps Biff with his math so he doesn’t fail, by claiming that despite Bernard being smart, he will not get far in life because he is not as “liked: as Biff, who at the time was a football star. The playwrights, each in their own way, are addressing the issues that have negatively impacted the identity of women in society.

Twelfth Night, by William Shakespeare captures the different conceptions of gender identity and different sexualities within the Elizabethan period.
One problem Willy has is that he does not take responsibility for his actions; this problem only gets worse because of his lies. Biff looks up to Willy, so when he finds out that Willy has an affair in Boston, Biff is petrified. Biff realizes his hero, dad, the one he wants to impress, is a phony and a liar. Willy destroys Biff's dream of playing football by saying he does not have to study for the math regents, he also Willy telling Bernard to give Biff the answers. When Biff fails the regents, he does not want to retake the test because he is so disgusted with his hero and does not want to succeed. Not only did Willy destroy Biff's dream, he also broke his vows and refused to admit it. Biff is a failure, in Willy's eye, in most part due to Willy and what happened in Boston. Willy refuses to take responsibility for what he did, so he lies about Biff. Willy tells Bernard that Biff has been doing great things out west, but decided to come back home to work on a "big deal". Willy knows that Biff is a bum who has not amounted to anything, but he refuses to take responsibility for what happened in Boston, so he changes the story of Biff's success. Throughout Willy's life he continued to lie. It might have stopped if Linda did not act the way as she did. Linda is afraid to confront Willy, so she goes along with his outlandish lies.
At the beginning of the play it is evident that he cannot determine the realities of life, and so he repeatedly contradicts himself to establish that his conclusion is correct and opinion accepted. These numerous contradictions demonstrate that Willy is perturbed of the possibility that negative judgements may come from others. Willy strongly believes that “personality always wins” and tells his sons that they should “be liked and (they) will never want”. In one of Willy’s flashbacks he recalls the time when his sons and him were outside cleaning their Chevy. Willy informs Biff and Happy the success of his business trips and how everyone residing in Boston adores him. He mentions that due to the admiration of people he does not even have to wait in lines. He ultimately teaches his sons that being liked by others is the way to fulfilling one’s life and removing your worries. These ideals, that one does not need to work for success, demonstrate Willy’s deluded belief of achieving a prosperous life from the admiration and acceptance of others. This ultimately proves to be a false ideology during his funeral, when an insufficient amount of people arrive. Willy constantly attempts to obtain other’s acceptance through his false tales that depict him as a strong, successful man. In the past, he attempts to lie to his wife, Linda, about the amount of wealth he has attained during his
Every father wants their kids to grow up great and sons look to their fathers as role models. As Willy has another moment with his thoughts we see how he and his sons used to be. Willy would brag and over exaggerate his work whenever he would come back from a business trip so his sons would look so proud. “I never have to wait in line to see a buyer. “Willy Loman is here!” that’s all they have to know, and I go right through.” (Miller, 1949). Willy was apparently a successful salesman whose sons looked up to and respected him for how great he was. Later on as the story progresses we see the relationship between Willy and biff has changed dramatically. There is some form of tension between the two of them. “Biff is a lazy bum.” (Miller, 1949). With this we can infer that Willy has a problem with how Biff lives or that there was some kind of problem between them. Willy also has very poor parenting skills. He has two children Biff and Happy. Willy excuses Biff for a lot of events when he was younger. If Biff stole something, Willy just brushes it off and says that is was no big deal. He didn’t even care when Biff failed math and did not graduate from high school. He measured success in how many people you knew not what your grades are. In one breath Willy would say that Biff is lazy and then in the next say he’s not.
During most father-son relationships, there are certain times where the father wants to become more of a "player" in his son’s life than his son believes is necessary. The reasons for this are numerous and can be demonstrated in different ways. Miller is able to give an example of this behavior through the actions of Willy Loman. When Biff comes home to recollect himself, Willy perceives it as failure. Since Willy desperately wants his oldest son, Biff, to succeed in every way possible, he tries to take matters into his own hands. "I’ll get him a job selling. He could be big in no time" (16). The reason that Biff came home is to find out what he wants in life. Because Willy gets in the way, matters become more complicated. Partly due to Willy’s persistence in Biff’s life, they have conflicting ideas as to what the American dream is. Willy believes that working on the road by selling is the greatest job a man could have (81). Biff, however, feels the most inspiring job a man could have is working outdoors (22).
In 1979, Caryl Churchill wrote a feminist play entitled Cloud Nine. It was the result of a workshop for the Joint Stock Theatre Group and was intended to be about sexual politics. Within the writing she included a myriad of different themes ranging from homosexuality and homophobia to female objectification and oppression. “Churchill clearly intended to raise questions of gender, sexual orientation, and race as ideological issues; she accomplished this largely by cross-dressing and role-doubling the actors, thereby alienating them from the characters they play.” (Worthen, 807) The play takes part in two acts; in the first we see Clive, his family, friends, and servants in a Victorian British Colony in Africa; the second act takes place in 1979 London, but only twenty-five years have passed for the family. The choice to contrast the Victorian and Modern era becomes vitally important when analyzing this text from a materialist feminist view; materialist feminism relies heavily on history. Cloud Nine is a materialist feminist play; within it one can find examples that support all the tenets of materialist feminism as outlined in the Feminism handout (Bryant-Bertail, 1).
A major part of the reader's animosity towards Willy stems from his responsibility for the ruin of his sons. Willy's affair ends up being the reason that Biff ends up a high-school failure and a football has-been. This blunder both disheartens and destroys his eldest son. It becomes the reason Biff refuses to go to summer school; it becomes the reason that Biff leaves home. Yet, this is all a result of Willy's need to be likeable. He cheats on his doting wife simply because it makes him feel special, because it gives him proof that women other that Linda are interested in him, because it makes him feel well liked. A woman "picked [him]"; a woman laughs when he makes jokes about keeping pores open; a woman pays him some attention (38).
In Death of a Salesman, willy is trapped when it comes to facing society instead he just tries to focus on becoming the perfect father and make it as a successful salesman in the world. The problem is willy doesn't want to face the fact that he fails biff when he doesn't biff grows older and doesn't really do anything with his life, at least not as much as will would have liked. Willy believes it's his fault that Biff isn’t a successful man with what he is doing currently, so he tries to push him to become a salesman, something he clearly wasn't meant to be, and Biff knows he isn't good at
Willy's search to find his mistakes of his life failed because, even though he found out what happened to Biff, he did not search for the right thing: his identity. Willy found out that his affair made Biff envision his father as a fake and phony, but he did not realize that a salesman was not the right job for him. When Willy died, no one came to his funeral (Act II. Scene I). This just showed that Willy was not the man he thought he was. He thought he was a great salesman with an unlimited amount of friends, but, when he died, no one was at his funeral but his family (Act II. Scene I). It showed that Willy was just a simple craftsman, who only needed attention and love from his family, and did not need fame or to be well-known ("Arthur Miller and Others," 311-314)
