Similarly, in the film Mad Max: Fury Road, there are many times that both the men and the women are empowered, rejecting gender norms. It is the representation that neither men nor women are weaker than the other. To show this, the women in this film are seen as being more assertive and powerful than the norm. In the film, the warlord Immortan Joe keeps five beautiful women as his wives. In a world where everyone has physical deformities, these wives are flawless and he keeps them locked up. He offers them anything they desire, while expecting their obedience and silence. These women reject his ideals for them and rebel. This is the first show of aggression from them, displaying their courage and refusal to be submissive. They write “WE ARE …show more content…
At the beginning, Max was held captive by Joe’s men, the War Boys. Being captured and unable to escape presents him as a weak man, slightly damaging his masculine image. His emasculation is more evident when contrasted with Furiosa’s role as a hero. She is the knight in shining armor that rescues the damsels in distress. While she is capable, Max is haunted by the memory of not being able to save those from his past. Denying Max the position to be a hero shows a more realistic view of men where they may not always the protector, but can still provide help in other ways. Rather than brawn, using his brain was one of Max’s greatest assets in the survival of Furiosa and her group. He would recommend alternate routes that would aid in their success. Even so, Max shows that he is also an impressive fighter, but with Furiosa in the picture, he is not the only one. Both of them have fought each other, delivering equal hits. Showing that Max and Furiosa are both similar in physical capabilities depicts the equality in genders. In the war rig, she is the one behind the wheel leading even though usually, the man would be. In this case, it shows that it doesn't matter who is in which seat because they are portrayed as equals. Throughout the film, the two form a camaraderie and work together without one’s strength overshadowing the other’s. …show more content…
Both The Matrix and Mad Max: Fury Road include characters that can be compared between the two films, such as Neo and Max, Trinity and Furiosa, or the Oracle and the Many Mothers. Mad Max is the more recent film out of the two and it definitely places woman in the spotlight for the film. Most of the characters are female and how they all handle the situation is what makes them appear so strong. At the start, the wives are sexualized and objectified but then develop into courageous women who have the ability to take part in overthrowing their tyrannical government. While The Matrix has less of a female presence, the only female roles in the film play a big part into the group’s success as well. In both films, it is noted that the main characters each embody traits that are usually linked to members of the opposite gender while maintaining their gender identity. Both Max and Neo end up appearing weak many times throughout the films in which they needed to be assisted. The women, Furiosa and Trinity, are both physically capable and take on male roles. Their appearances are also based on a more male look, such as the leather adorned by both along with their short hair. In Kat Sinclair’s "Pitching the Voice: Programming Women and Machines," it mentions how gender can be compared to technology, where women serve men without having their
An example of their adventures is when Kevin mouths at Tony D. and his gang, defending Max and himself; after of which he discovers that Max could not have fought Tony and incredulously questions, “You mean you couldn’t take him and I was giving him lip?” (31). Kevin’s words reveal his trust in Max. He incited Tony, believing Max would be able to protect the both of them. The boys’ next conflict, an encounter with Iggy, the head of a troublemaking motorcycle gang, and Loretta, his wife, show Max’s concern for Kevin and his wanting to keep Kevin safe: “I feel real bad for Freak because he hated it when people try to rub his head for luck, but I don’t say a word, I just run us home, thumping the short way back around the pond, and my big feet never trip me up because I’m on automatic, I’m this running machine” (72). Max is very attuned and sensitive to Kevin’s feelings, an important quality in a friendship. Also, his desire to protect Kevin and keep him away from Iggy and Loretta prevent his clumsiness from impeding his speedy progress to home. The conflicts Freak the Mighty encounter prove the boys’ undeniable teamwork and
Max and Freak relationship is very good. They both like each other and our good friends.Frea thinks of Max as his legs, so he can walk. Max thinks of Freak as his Brain, so he can think and be smart. It’s almost like they
Gender relationships are a very explored issue within these texts. In a majority, anyone no matter if they are male or female who do not fit in or do not conform to stereotypes to an extent, can be cast out by that group. Whether it is, their looks, their behaviour, the way they dress, or the way they think and feel, they are judged as different. This ‘outcast’ idea is portrayed in both the films. In the two feature films, the most obvious ‘outcasts’ would be the two ‘hero figures’ the intruders into the created microcosm.
In addition, in chapter 5, the spitting image, it was directly stated that Max’s mother was a good friend of Freak’s mother, and The Fair Gwen, from what was give to me, is again, a wholesome, decent person, if not a bit delicate. A good friend of The Fair Gwen would need to be gentle with her, and compassionate of her single-parent struggles. Max is just like that, demonstrating that he cares for his close friend when he follows through on all of his shenanigans without complaint, and when he takes Freak along when evading the father.
That being the case, Max would never believe in himself and changed in life without Freak there to help him.
Max plays the role of a spokesman for Richard Wright. Unlike others, he considers the humanity in Bigger and sees him for what he is rather than a black man and/or a murder. Considering this, Bigger is open to Max and tells his side of the story for the first time. Moreover, because of Max’s understandment, Bigger sees that it is indeed possible for a black and a white man to have a sympathetic relationship.

It is evident that Max tries to escape his reality and get lost in a world where he can find freedom from his complex troubles, much like every other child in the world today whom does not know how to deal with such chaotic and complicated thoughts. Max, unknowingly comes face to face with all his emotions through the lives of others, helping him to come to an understanding in his escape. In the film “Where the Wild Things Are” Max’s sister ignores him, he feels his mothers new boyfriend is taking her from him and he is overall portrayed as a lonely, lost character. Max is told by his mother that he has gone out of control, which essentially is the last straw in initiating him to run away to where he eventually ends up where the wild things are. According to the article “Fantasy - Necessary for Sanity and Morality” in order for proper development, “A child needs to understand what is going on within his conscious self so that he can cope with that which goes on within his unconscious.” This can be attained by daydreaming through stories and scenarios to ...
When asking the question, “What are the differences between men and women?” what things come into mind? When asking friends what their thoughts were they stated things such as men are stronger, women are weaker, men are bigger, women are smaller, men make more money, etc. Due to the obvious assumptions that people have been making for centuries it is thought by some Americans that males are the dominant sex. Before watching Miss Representation I had always gotten so upset at certain men for the way they treated women or the things they would say to them. After this film I realized that their actions might have stemmed from “rules” that they were taught an early age; those rules being the rules of masculinity. After reviewing the rules it finally clicked to me why
In this Claymation, the point of view is a bit convoluted. Both character’s stories are told through letters; Max’s point of view takes over when Mary reads his letters and vice versa. By enveloping each character in the other’s life by allowing them to have a voice thousands of miles away, the point of view allows for a stronger bond between the two. They are also both able to connect over their similar conflicts over self-acceptance.... ...
...ink he shouldve just put him out. I undestand that him putting max out was keeping him and his family safe, but i think he couldve found somwhere else for Max to saty. This part appeals to the readers logos. while reading this part the reader was trting to understand why Hans couldnt find somewhere else for Max to stay. Hans could've just let Max stay, and really showed how brave he was during the end of the book. This cowadice action was a disadvantage for Max because he had to go through so much once he was put out.
Gender stereotypes are ideas simplified, but strongly assumed, on the characteristics of men and women, that translates into a series of tasks and activities that are assign in each culture. Along life, family, school, and environment, Society thought us what is right and what is not in being men or women. Starting with the form we dress, talk, express, behave, to what we can play or what sport to participate. The margin of the biological endowment differences males and females; the fact of being women or men implies a long process of learning and adaptation to the rules established starting with work, personality, love and desires. In the movie "The Ugly Truth." you can see different situations that reflect what society is teaching us for
Mad Max: Fury road Analysis Survival, The primary theme of Mad Max: Fury Road is survival and maintenance of mankind in the face of apocalyptic events. The theme of humankind is outlined by Max starting the film a non-domesticated wandered, at that point rediscovering his previous dignity by joining forces with Furiosa. Miller is telling a symbolic story, not a linear one. That story happens to be about war and its aftermath, slavery, the objectification of human beings, and PTSD. The medium he uses to tell this story happens to be an action movie, more specifically a car chase.
(5.2.263) As soon as a female character shows a bit of out of character personality and independence she is essentially punished with death. Along with the weak characterization of the two female characters, the tone used when referencing them adds to the degradation of women in the
...ected to carry heavy loads of items and this is true even in today’s time. In the past women had almost no rights except to be a housewife. Most people say that the reason behind this is that women are considered gentle and delicate. For example, in this collage a person only includes pictures that are delicate and gentle such as empty bags. Consequently, females are not considered as strong as males because of there delicate characteristics.
