“The problem with gender is that it prescribes how we should be rather than recognizing how we are. Imagine how much happier we would be, how much freer to be our true individual selves, if we didn’t have the weight of gender expectations” (Adichie 34). Gender roles were not as flexible in the 1930s compared to the present, but there were many inspiring and appreciated women in the 1930s just like there are currently. Some of these female characters are good strong role models for the main character, Scout, and are very similar to the women role models we have today.

Aunt Alexandra comes to live with Scout’s family in order to be a better female role model for the children, especially Scout. “‘Jem’s growing up now and you are too,’ she (Aunt Alexandra) said to me. ‘We decided that it would be best for you to have some feminine influence’” (Lee 145). Aunt Alexandra plans on being a bigger part of the children’s lives and plans on being the female role model for Scout, despite the fact that she has Calpurnia. Aunt Alexandra isn’t ill-intentioned, but is frequently embarrassed by Scout and her tomboy tendencies. Aunt Alexandra is a confident woman and has a big influence on the people around her. “I carefully picked up the tray and watched myself walk to Mrs. Merriweather. With my very best company manners, I asked her if she would have some. After all, if Aunty could be a lady at a time like this, so could I” (Lee 271). When they were informed of Tom's death, and Alexandra expressed her worry for Atticus, she was strong enough to go back to her visitors and keep them happy. Alexandra may not be the perfect role model, but someone who inspired Scout to be strong during tough times. Alexandra has different expectations for Scout than Atticus does, but she still affects Scout and teaches her enough to influence
