People have been aware of creating their identities for a few decades. However, it is easy to create an identity. What is hard is creating that identity as independent from society and discovering your own identity. Society has been such an enormous impact on people’s lives. Everyone became identical to each other by copying attitudues from their surrondings. These attitudues have been shaped by mostly discourses. Discourses are actually stereotypes based on morality and religion. Everyone is aware of these discourses because of society and mass media. Obviously, society is the one who created all these discourses and it continues spreading them but mass media has been a crucial transmitter these discourses to audiences. From this definition, gender roles can also be called as ‘the discourses on sexuality’. Media has been in every part of people’s lives and this is dangerous since it can give any message and people may consume them without questioning. Gender roles are given as a hidden message in media especially in movies and TV dramas. The Simpsons and The Lion King can be given as examples of this situation. In the episode called “Homer’s phobia” of The Simpsons, there are so many gender roles not even encoding into the episode, they are so obvious. For instance, Homer and his friends try to ‘straighten’ Bart because he might tend to be gay, so they are taking him to hunt because men are tough and it is normal for them to kill living beings. Another example from the same episode is that smoking is shown as manly unless you smoke slim cigarette because slim associates with females. These are all gender roles put on men by society. In the same episode, Lisa is questioning his father’s idea and asking him how killing a dear makes a person man. This quesiton is kind of a proof. These attitudes towards gender and gender roles do play a role in our society because we all have our opinions on what race or gender is superior over the other. Some think the white race is superior, while others think the black race is. Same with gender most feel that the male gender is superior over the female gender due to the fact that the male gender is stronger, and less emotional than the female gender
What is gender? The answer to that is not so simple. “Gender is what culture makes out of the ‘raw material’ of biological sex,” (Unger and Crawford, 1995). Also, there is a difference between what is gender identity and what is a gender role; a difference which seems to be even more difficult to differentiate between than the words “gender” and “sex”. Media and other parts of our culture seem to believe they know the difference, yet up until a certain period in time, the same stereotypical characters were portrayed and used as role models for others in most media. Women characters being the helpless victims, while the strong men would come to save them (including television shows such as Miami Vice or Three’s Company). Today there is a whole slew of shows and movies, which are redefining and re-categorizing the stereotypical language in relation to gender. One such television series is Buffy, The Vampire Slayer (starring Sarah Michelle Gellar). And although it may seem like a typical teen-angst show, and the main character is a “whiny, rich” girl who fights demons , many people believed it would be exactly like the film (of the same name) which came out five years before the television show first aired in 1997. The film (starring Kristy Swanson) was trite and “airy”, and yet the television series proved those non-believers wrong. In a stereotypical world within the culture that the show represents, Buffy is doing a man’s “job”. She is fighting creatures double her size, and killing them. She is aggressive, outgoing, and determined. Words which are not “normally” used to describe women (without, of course, the word “bitch” trailing right behind them). In other cultures, women being the more aggressive and “take-charge” kind of person is the “norm”, but because we are living in a society, a culture, where even with the whole women’s suffrage being long passed, many people would still like to see women behave as dainty, quiet, and passive characters. The short answer would be that gender roles are a byproduct of heteronormative thinking that has been passed down through countless generations of patriarchal society. When a young boy plays with tools or toy cars, he is performing his gender role in accordance with the Patriarchal society in which he lives, but if the same young boy were to play with dolls, he would be stepping outside of the social construct of heteronormative activities. Everyone follows certain rules and acts a certain way. Simon says your Princess Peach or Mario and you can only have the green property if you’re Mario. The question though is where do we learn these rules? Who tells us how to perform these gender roles? We learn about gender through many different sources, but most prominently is media. In American culture, media constructs gender roles through the submissive and objectifying portrayal of women in television, the rendering of masculinity as violent, and the gendered consumer image created by magazines. These aspects show us how to play the game; they set the board for us to traverse.
It is often said that the media and the arts are an accurate reflection of any given community. This is especially true in American pop-culture, where television shows depict the various stereotypes attributed to men and women and the roles they play in society. House, a highly popular medical drama that revolves around Dr. Gregory House and his diagnostic team, is a particularly good example as it represents the true state of the traditional gender roles in American culture today by, both, redefining and reinforcing them over the course of the show.

Gender roles are often used in our own society to tie people to a certain representation for what is socially acceptable. These roles perpetuate gender inequalities because they often make the female end of the spectrum worth less than the male. One example is equating masculinity with strength and femininity with weakness. Because of this sayings such as “You run like a girl” become negative. Gender roles create a system where people are set to a different standard based off gender alone. In trying to follow what is socially acceptable based on gender people are forced into roles. There is a lower percentage of women in science than men because girls are taught at a young age that being smart isn’t feminine. According to the dictionary, gender role is defined as “a role or behavior learned by a person as appropriate to their gender, determined by the prevailing cultural norms”. In Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain uses gender roles to show that women have specific roles in society. In the 1800s, men and women had complete opposite roles. Women had certain jobs, such as cleaning the house and watching the children, while the men were out in the world getting jobs and providing for their families.

To begin with, we technically are not born with identity; it is a socially constructed attribute. Identity is a transient thing, which changes over time as we grow and mature. The self-concept, which is our own personal understanding of who we are, combines with self awareness to cultivate a cognitive representation of the self, called identity (Aronson, Wilson, & Akert, 2010, p.118). In other words, who we are is controlled by internal and external factors that combine to make us who we become. Bring new media outlets into the equation, such as the internet, and media is now regarded as an "extension of everyday life and a tool of cultural change" (Singh, 2010). Thus, identity formation, as a social concept, is being transformed in new and even more global ways.

For example in "Keep Within Compass," it is obvious that a man drew the plate because the woman is depicted to be genteel, sedate, and almost air headed in appearance, with no voice of her own. This is a prime example of the despicable properties placed in gender roles. Girls cannot play football and guys cannot be cheerleaders. The gender roles are defining what is right and what is wrong within society. For example, in the "Keep Within Compass" plate, the woman is wrong if she does not conform to the ideal of society.
