The novel, The Sun Also Rises, by Ernest Hemingway is an example of how an entire generation redefined gender roles after being affected by the war. The Lost Generation of the 1920’s underwent a great significance of change that not only affected their behaviors and appearances but also how they perceived gender identity. Lady Brett Ashley and Jake Barnes are two of the many characters in the novel that experience shattered gender roles because of the post war era. The characters in the novel live a lifestyle in which drugs and alcohol are used to shadow emotions and ideals of romanticism. Brett’s lack of emotional connection to her various lovers oppose Jake’s true love for her which reveals role reversal in gender and the redefinition of masculinity and femininity. The man is usually the one that is more emotionally detached but in this case Lady Brett Ashley has a masculine quality where as Jake has a feminine quality. Both men and female characters in the novel do not necessarily fit their gender roles in society due to the post war time period and their constant partying and drinking. By analyzing Brett, Jake, and the affects the war had on gender the reader obtains a more axiomatic understanding of how gender functions in the story by examining gender role reversal and homosexuality.
Lady Brett Ashley is one of the most complex characters in the novel and is a perfect example of a shattered gender role. Her character contains a mixture of strength and vulnerability and she possesses both masculine and feminine traits. Even when Robert attacks Jake over Brett he is unable to fight back and stand up for himself which questions his masculinity. Jake still ends up talking to Cohn and compromising his pride when Robert asks for his forgiveness. Although Jake simply replies with “sure”, it is clear that he seems to have lost all sense of self and his masculinity depreciates. Jake feels connected to bull fighting and sees it as the best means to live life. “I can’t stand it to think my life is going so fast and I’m not really living it. Nobody ever lives their life all the way except bull fighters” (Hemmingway 18). For example, she taunts pure people like Romero, who is probably still a virgin because he does not “mix that stuff” (Hemingway, 90), for Romero, bullfighting always comes first , and there is Jake who is impotent. Although, between the lines, Brett thinks about all “the hell [she] put chaps through...[she is] paying for it all now” (Hemingway, 14). Brett is not necessarily thinking about these men, instead she is punishing herself for all that she has put men through by being involved with people who can not match up with her sexually. Masculinity Gone Awry: Hemingway’s Robert Cohn in The Sun Also Rises From the beginning, Robert Cohn’s name defines himself-he is essentially a conehead in a society where concealing insecurities and projecting masculinity is paramount. Although he tries in vain to act stereotypically male, Cohn’s submissive attitude and romantic beliefs ultimately do little to cover up the pitiful truth; he is nothing more than a degenerate shadow of masculinity, doomed for isolation by society. In the incriminating eyes of people around him, Cohn is a picture-perfect representation of a failure as a man. Through Cohn, Hemingway delineates not only the complications of attaining virility, but also the reveal of another “lost” generation within the Lost Generation:
The adjustment from years on the frontlines of World War I to the mundane everyday life of a small Oklahoma town can be difficult. Ernest Hemingway’s character Harold Krebs, has a harder time adjusting to home life than most soldiers that had returned home. Krebs returned years after the war was over and was expected to conform back into societies expectations with little time to adapt back to a life not surrounded by war. Women take a prominent role in Krebs’s life and have strong influences on him. In the short story “Soldier’s Home” Hemingway uses the women Krebs interacts with to show Krebs internal struggle of attraction and repulsion to conformity.
How does one compare the life of women to men in late nineteenth century to mid-twentieth century America? In this time the rights of women were progressing in the United States and there were two important authors, Kate Chopin and John Steinbeck. These authors may have shown the readers a glimpse of the inner sentiments of women in that time. They both wrote a fictitious story about women’s restraints by a masculine driven society that may have some realism to what women’s inequities may have been. The trials of the protagonists in both narratives are distinctive in many ways, only similar when it totals the macho goaded culture of that time. Women, in the past decades, have undergone a revolution. They have earned the right to vote and the right to be a man’s equal under the law. They have confronted the obsolete values of male superiority. They have even manage to destabilize the firm belief that only men could be in power. Despite these accomplishments, women have also made a point that we are not equal, simply, men aren’t superior to any women.

Once again, Jake and his group of friend’s lifestyle is an example of them trying to conforming to society. Jake has a conversation with Cohn and he says, “I can't stand it to think my life is going so fast and I'm not really living it." (Hemingway, 13). With Jake responding, "nobody ever lives their life all the way up except bullfighters.” (Hemingway, 13). Both are having trouble with conforming to normal life in Paris after World War 1. In the novel A Thousand splendid suns, Hosseini exemplifies the need for dignity and purpose through the lack of these characteristics in Mariam, an underappreciated, illegitimate woman. Mariam’s battle for self-worth shapes how she relates to others, and her role in the Afghan culture. Mariam's experiences illustrate the need for finding purpose in oneself when facing instability because of gender oppression.
The women of Afghan go through great lengths; obstacles, both momentous and physical hinder their path as they tolerate oppression. Written by Afghan-american author Khaled Hosseini, A Thousand Splendid Suns depicts a woman's life during a time period of 1959-2003 and how changes in Afghan society force female characters to endure. In this fictional novel, the story follows an illegitimate girl, Mariam as she ages, learning of society through her experiences. By constantly being exposed to the characteristics and customs of Afghan society the female character progress, learning to endure gender bias, male dominance, and strict rules.
For instance, Lady Brett's personality demonstrates the idea of self-satisfaction. Brett’s short haircut, unladylike vocabulary, and unapologetically promiscuous behavior makes her the most traditionally "masculine" character in the novel. She effortlessly went after what she desired and it caused the men to pine after her; however, she does not commit to any man who is infatuated with her. Her refusal to commit to one man brought the insecurities of the men to the forefront. Brett’s strong sense of self ultimately emasculated them.

Throughout the history of literature women have been viewed as inferior to men, but as time has progressed the idealistic views of how women perceive themselves has changed. In earlier literature women took the role of being the “housewife” or the household caretaker for the family while the men provided for the family. Women were hardly mentioned in the workforce and always held a spot under their husband’s wing. Women were viewed as a calm and caring character in many stories, poems, and novels in the early time period of literature. During the early time period of literature, women who opposed the common role were often times put to shame or viewed as rebels. As literature progresses through the decades and centuries, very little, but noticeable change begins to appear in perspective to the common role of women. Women were more often seen as a main character in a story setting as the literary period advanced. Around the nineteenth century women were beginning to break away from the social norms of society. Society had created a subservient role for women, which did not allow women to stand up for what they believe in. As the role of women in literature evolves, so does their views on the workforce environment and their own independence. Throughout the history of the world, British, and American literature, women have evolved to become more independent, self-reliant, and have learned to emphasize their self-worth.
In the novel The Sun Also Rises, by Ernest Hemingway, a reader is forced to decide weather the spite that the Jake has for Chon originates from Jake's racist background, or his deeply seeded jealousy of Chon for having a brief affair with Brett. Even though it is clear that Jake has racist views, the hatred he has for his former friend Chon is strictly based on the jealousy he feels towards Chon for the weekend he spent with Brett.
