A gender-role attitude is how a person believes men and women should act based on what they think is appropriate. My gender role-attitude is egalitarian. This is because I believe that in the household men and women should have equal roles and share their responsibilities. I also believe that men and women are both equals and should share their duties in terms of the household work and financially providing for their family. I believe that both men and women have the emotional capacity to be both assertive and nurturing. The text gives an example that if I believe that women can be construction workers and serve in the military; which are male dominated professions then I have an egalitarian gender-role attitude (Helgeson, 2011). Both in the
text and in lecture it was also discussed that if I believe that men can take on the role of the primary care giver to their child, then that also makes me an egalitarian (Helgeson, 2011). I am an egalitarian because I believe that both men and women should be able to work in whatever profession they choose, even if it is usually dominated by the opposite sex. I also believe that both men and women share the responsibility in caring for their child and either parent has the right to take time off work to do so. My family shares my gender-role attitude; this is because my family has never been completely traditional. In my household my mother makes more money than my father, who is supposed to be the main provider if you were to think traditionally. Both my parents split their responsibilities with each other and work as equals. For example, my mother does all the cooking and my father does all the cleaning. Also my parents have never raised us to follow gender-role norms. Both my sister and I have been played competitive sports for the majority of our childhood and have been raised to be strong and independent individuals. My parents have never forced certain attitudes on us and have encouraged us to follow whatever career path we choose. I think that I have an egalitarian gender-role attitude because my parents live life with an egalitarian gender-role attitude and I have learned what is acceptable and appropriate from them.

But in this exploration of the gender signals that traditionally tell what a “boy” or “girl” is supposed to look and act like, Aaron Devor shows how these signals are not “natural” at all but instead are cultural constructs. While the classic cues of masculinity—aggressive posture, self-confidence, a tough appearance—and the traditional signs of femininity—gentleness, passivity, strong nurturing instincts—are often considered “normal,” Devor explains that they are by no means biological or psychological necessities. Indeed, he suggests, they can be richly mixed and varied, or to paraphrase the old Kinks song “Lola,” “Boys can be girls and girls can be boys.” Devor is dean of social sciences at the University of Victoria and author of Gender Blending: Confronting the Limits of Duality (1989), from which this selection is excerpted, and FTM: Female-to-Male Transsexuals in Society (1997).
In the United States, standards vary depending on ethnicity, age, education, and occupation. For example, African American families are less likely to follow strict gender-role distinctions when socializing their children, whereas Mexican-American families are more likely to highlight gender differences. Suggested roles of all types set the stage for how human beings perceive their life should be. Gender roles are one of the most dangerous roles that society faces today. With all of the controversy applied to male vs. female dominance in households, and in the workplace, there seems to be an argument either way. In the essay, “Men as Success Objects”, the author Warren Farrell explains this threat of society as a whole. Farrell explains the difference of men and women growing up and how they believe their role in society to be. He justifies that it doesn’t just appear in marriage, but in the earliest stages of life. Similarly, in the essay “Roles of Sexes”, real life applications are explored in two different novels. The synthesis between these two essays proves how prevalent roles are in even the smallest part of a concept and how it is relatively an inevitable subject.
Since the beginning of time men have played the dominant role in nearly every culture around the world. If the men were not dominant, then the women and men in the culture were equal. Never has a culture been found where women have dominated. In “Society and Sex Roles” by Ernestine Friedl, Friedl supports the previous statement and suggests that “although the degree of masculine authority may vary from one group to the next, males always have more power” (261). Friedl discusses a variety of diverse conditions that determine different degrees of male dominance focusing mainly on the distribution of resources. In The Forest People by Colin Turnbull, Turnbull describes the culture of the BaMbuti while incorporating the evident sex roles among these “people of the forest”. I believe that the sex roles of the BaMbuti depicted by Turnbull definitely follow the pattern that is the basis of Freidl’s arguments about the conditions that determine variations of male dominance. Through examples of different accounts of sex roles of the BaMbuti and by direct quotations made by Turnbull as well as members of the BaMbuti tribe, I intend on describing exactly how the sex roles of the BaMbuti follow the patterns discussed by Freidl. I also aim to depict how although women are a vital part of the BaMbuti culture and attain equality in many areas of the culture, men still obtain a certain degree of dominance.
Girls are supposed to play with dolls, wear pink, and grow up to become princesses. Boys are suppose to play with cars, wear blue, and become firefighters and policemen. These are just some of the common gender stereotypes that children grow up to hear. Interactions with toys are one of the entryway to different aspects of cognitive development and socialism in early childhood. In the society we live in today there is a strong difference between what is considered “boy” and what is considered “girl”. This is because from the time we are born; to the time we die we are expected to conform to a gender role. A gender role is a set of behaviors, attitudes, and personality characteristics expected of a person based on their sex. This process of getting people to conform to their gender roles is called socialization, and it affects children very drastically. There are many different places that gender socialization comes from. It comes mainly from family, peers, and the media. Girls are made to believe that they are supposed to be gentle and nurturing, whereas boys are taught to be tough and even aggressive. Personally, as a child, I learned and have kept to the idea that I’m a girl, and I find that I identify with the things that would make someone a “girl”. These past few chapters have really made me really look into how much of the “girly” things I really like, and how much of it is socialized behavior- where I say that I like something because it’s what I grew up knowing I was supposed to like. Today it’s nearly impossible to go a day without seeing some kind of these gender stereotypes. We socialize our children in a constant cycle of what’s “boy” and what is “girl”.

Throughout history, sexism and gender roles in society has been a greatly debated topic. The Women’s Rights Movements, N.O.M.A.S. (The National Organization of Men Against Sexism), M.A.S.E.S. (Movement Against Sexual Exploitation and Sexism), and many other movements and groups have all worked against the appointment of gender roles and sexist beliefs. Many authors choose to make a controversial topic a central theme in their work of literature, and the theme of gender roles is no exception. “Phenomenal Woman” by Maya Angelou, “Diving into the Wreck” by Adrienne Rich, and “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman all address the gender roles that have been placed by society.
Indisputably, roles and characteristics of opposite genders have been ubiquitous, since historical evidence proves so – dating back to when the practice of oral tradition was favored over written language. This historical evidence is especially apparent in literature from previous time periods. In these works of literature, men and women often have very different social and economic positions within society. Particular duties, or tasks, are practiced depending on the gender of these individuals. However, in the advancing world we are currently living in, these duties are beginning to intertwine in an effort to allow equal rights amongst opposite genders. This effort to break the sexist barrier, which encompasses our world, has already begun rattling the chains of politicians and the like. However, with the progressions made thus far in retaliation to sexism and unequal gender privileges, the United States of America is heading in a positive direction towards gender equality. Nonetheless, the female gender is perceived as a lesser entity in society while the male gender is dominant and controlling. The masculine individuals in literary works usually govern, or direct the feminine individuals. These characteristics are often evident in various literary works – including “Hills Like White Elephants,” and “A&P” written by Ernest Hemingway and John Updike, respectively. The slow and steady transformation from a sexist society to one that allows inferior genders to perform similar tasks, if not the same as their superior counterparts, may disturb the ideological mindset of figures with authority; however, it provides inferior genders with the opportunity to branch out socially, economically, and politically.
Males and females are treated differently in society because of gender roles. Men are believed to be the breadwinner in the family, and women are known for taking care of the household. Men also have a higher salary than women because of their gender roles. Parents teach their children about their gender roles as they get older, so they can fit in with society.
