Were there any moments when your gender was a help or hindrance in a particular job or educational experience? Is there anything about being “male” or being “female” that you can see encouraged the choices you made? If you were a different gender would you have made different choices?
Looking back at the course material, what one concept that you learned in this class helps you to understand yourself and your educational and occupational history? Please describe the concept and show how it applies to your history. How could you see gender making a difference in your education or career going forward?
The Cirque Management position from June 1999 to April 2002 as well as my position for Apartment Management Consultants (AMC, LLC) from April 2002 to February 2012 my gender was a reason for my being chosen for the position of Leasing Agent. I was told that my looks were a large consideration for the position because they felt that Leasing Agents who are attractive can bring in and tend to close more leases.

This decision was based off on previous experience with my teachers who made learning an exciting process and also the historical trips my dad took us on that taught us history, cultures, battles, gender and society. After reading “Gun Crazy” by Dorothy Allison, I immediately thought of my own experiences where was told being a female I couldn’t or shouldn’t do certain things. Allison discussed how her uncle told her that just because she was a female she wouldn’t ever be taught how to shoot a gun by any male in her family. I could instantly relate, in coming to Mississippi State my major was Architecture. I was told by many professors and advisors that Architecture is a male dominated career and that maybe I should major in Interior Design, a major that is similar but “more feminine”. Looking back on the jobs I’ve had they are often considered manly jobs in society which leads me into thinking about gender roles in our society. Gender roles are a set of behavioral norms assumed to accompany one’s status as a male or female (Conley 2017). Gender roles are very prevalent in determining one’s career. Gender roles are socially constructed so they are likely to be based off stereotypes. For example, a truck driving company may not hire a woman simply because women are stereotyped as bad drivers. In a study done by Lindsey Rice and Joan Barth they found that males were less likely to recommend the female applicant, particularly after stereotype-congruent priming. Meaning that simply a female applicant might be passed on just because of her gender. This then leads us into sexism. Sexism is when a person’s sex or gender is the basis for judgment or discrimination (Conley 2017). The first teacher that I observed with my group was Mr. Leonhardt at Streams Elementary School. While I was there, I was able to observe him teach two classes of fourth graders, two classes of third graders, and one class of second graders. Along with the belief of nursing being a career choice more female-directed, there was also the repeated mention of the career being for middle-class women (Price, 2008). Historically, women have been the dominant face of nursing and it has always been considered a suitable career for women, whereas most careers in the past would never be acceptable for a female. For some of the female students who were interviewed, this stereotype was part of a deferent to choosing nursing. According to the article “It’s a Man’s World”, many fields are still male-dominated even though women have slowly started entering them. Historically women have been time and again been denied to enter certain occupations based on gender. Women still face many of the same challenges addressed in working in a male-dominated career. Earning the respect of their male colleagues, obtaining the same promotions and balancing work and home life appear to remain at the forefront of issues still in need of being addressed.
Career goals are based on predetermined ideas of gender roles. I have been more than qualified for many jobs, but have lost them to women who are less capable. Jobs such as retail often choose women over men due to a stereotypical idea that women are more affable than men.
Alice Eagly and Linda Carli focused on women in the workplace and how far women have come in the workplace. LeasePlan has been involved directly with this because they are providing more opportunities for women in the organization. The recommendations were also increase awareness of predudus and use employment agencies instead of using referrals. They also encouraged women to work together instead of alone. They also recommended flextime, telecommuting and daycare for working women. To be able to retain the competitive advantages LeasePlan has focused on promoting women to help increase employee satisfaction. By doing this women have been more positive about their employment.
I advanced through college and graduate school during a revolutionary period. As a woman, I balked at the idea of being a teacher or taking on any other profession traditionally classed as “women’s work.” I wanted to make a difference in the world I wanted to bridge gaps between races, gender, generalizations and stereotypes. . If single-handedly saving the world did not work out, I could be a rock star like Carol King, Stevie Nicks, or my personal favorite, Tina Turner. But teaching? Nope. Not for me.

With being a male educator there are a great amount of advantages. The greatest advantage of being a male teacher would be the self satisfaction. Male teachers have the need or desire to want to go and mold the minds of the students that they teach. Knowing that they are making a difference is also an advantage in itself. “This proves that a job in an elementary is not only fulfilling, but can also be a new start for men in careers that they don’t like.” (Nathan Forman). Male teachers also experience positive discrimination because they are men, they will get a job as a teacher easy. Many say that men have the advantage of going into elementary education also because they may receive more promotions. With the percent of elementary male educators low, most administrators are hiring males to fill positions. Many see the male teachers as role models for the students. There are two organizations that encourage, and recruit, males to join early education; the National Education Association (NEA) and Menteach.org.
This class showed me how inequality is the base of education, if it’s not about gender it’s about class or race, making it hard for a person that falls under this description to have an equal chance, yet our society train us to believe that education can change
