In most of the world, women seem to be the victims suffering from heavy inequality, from not permitted to drive in countries like Saudi Arabia, to occupational segregation in countries like the United States. So why is it even after the women’s movement in 1920s, and many equal rights laws in placed in the constitution of The United States, women are still facing such disputes across the nation? The answer is simple, from many years and still today the female gender is perceived to be less powerful than a male. The social injustice I chose was the Gender Wage Gap. That means that there is a huge difference of one gender getting paid less than the other. A women makes 78 cents an hour while men make a dollar. In my piece, I chose to make both gender symbols doctors who perform the same job, the same amount of work hours,and that they both save lives. Beginning with the early nineteen hundreds, women from all over the country have bounded together, forming leagues and clubs for equal rights. However, it wasn't until today "at the dawn of the twenty-first century, states and international community can no longer refute the fact that humanity is made up of two sexes, not just one" (Oliveria 26). Why has the woman's move for equality just now started to balance itself out? Well, the answer is quite simple; women are just now being looked at as semi-equals. They are beginning to become corporate executives in businesses, and popular in the field of medicine and law. Women have tried hard to push themselves forward in society to create a balanced and harmonious economy and so far it has been successful. Barriers of all kinds have been broken, well, all except a few, mainly in politics and with the information I have collected I will show why.
Throughout history women have been regarded as inferior to men, giving them a disadvantage when it came to every aspect of life. However as time passed by, many outstanding females have shortened that gap between men and women, thus giving women a better quality of life and more opportunities of success. Women’s role has evolved throughout time as they gained and improved labor and education rights, the opportunity to influence the succeeding generations and their status in society.
When President John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act of 1963 into law, he hoped that it would allow working women to finally earn the same amount of money as men; however, more than half a century later, men continue to out earn women in almost every field of work (Lipman para. 4). Male dominated fields tend to pay more than female dominated fields at similar skill levels. In 2012, women earned an average of $691 per week while men earned an average of $854 per week. Furthermore, the majority of women remain unaware that they are earning less than their male colleagues (Hegewisch para. 1). Since the nineteen twenties women of America have been considered equal citizens of our country, and had to work hard in order to obtain that equality in the workplace. One may reconsider the success rate of females in America, and if they really have made it as far as popular belief may have it. Of course, American women can vote, can hold office, and they can work, which is more than can be said for some countries. But do both sexes really hold equal in the workplace regarding manners of salary and respect? Does the corporate executive world really take women seriously? These are some of the arguments made by women today that do not feel that they are being treated equal in the workplace. On the other hand, those who believe women are treated equally usually reason that differences balance out in statistics, things such as majority of teachers are women, and women also have a hold on the entrepreneur side of businesses. The voices that are still screaming come from an audience who feel that women still have a long way to go before achieving a status of total equality.
Gender Pay Gap also referred to as Gender wage gap, gender income difference or male-female income difference refers to the difference between the earning of men and women (Victoria, 2006). The European Union defines the Gender Pay gap as the difference between men and women’s hourly earnings (OECD, 2012). The difference may be measured on hourly, weekly, monthly, or yearly earning. The difference is expressed as a percentage of the men’s earning. However, the difference varies from one industry to another, from one country to another and from one age group to another. On average, men earn higher than women do across different sectors and nations.
Women are more than half the work force and are graduating at higher rates then men and continue to earn considerably less then men. There are several contributing factors to the gender wage gap. Women experience gender discrimination in the work force even though it’s been illegal since the Equal Pay Act in 1963. One of the challenges for women is uncovering discrimination. There is a lack of transparency in earnings because employees are either contractually prohibited or it’s strongly discouraged from being discussed. Discrimination also occurs in the restricting of women’s access to jobs with the highest commission payments, or access to lucrative clients.
Women and men for the most part have reached complete equality, but it hasn’t always been this way. In the past women weren’t treated as full citizens, by not having complete rights, limited amount of jobs, and hardly a say in anything. Today women have the same opportunities as men such as in, education, jobs, and full voting rights. Although all these rights have only been intact until just recently, women have only had a say in choosing a president for just a little under a century. In the past, women were expected to stay home and take care of the family while the men were at work. This was the expectation for women for centuries. However, that is no longer the case. Since the 19th century, the women's movement has made fantastic strides toward obtaining civil rights for women in America. Woman suffrage has been abolished, and they are no longer viewed as second-class citizens. Unfortunately, the issue of gender inequality still echoes in today's society. The fight to change a society shaped predominately by men continues, and will likely pursue for decades to come. Whether it be social, political, or economic rights, the main idea is equality for all genders, man or woman. In modern society, it seems that such a simple concept should be accepted globally by everyone – so why do women still face the daily toils of demanding the privileges that should available to all? No matter the class of woman, it is likely they will suffer from inequality and stereotypes at some point in their life. We see this in the workplace, where women have been shown to earn less then men. Some women also face the dangers of sexual violence, and are left victimized for such crimes.
In today’s society, Women perform similar jobs to men. Whether it’s blue or white collar jobs, women are always present and thriving for success balancing a life of business and family. In the job market, some are graduates of the best schools and have interned at the best firms, but are still not compensated as equally as men. Following the recent comments by the CEO of Microsoft concerning women asking for raises and how they should trust the system to install equality, the issue seems to be still present, and women’s work is not rewarded similarly to men’s.
Women have long struggled to make their place in America be an accepted one of equality in position and pay. While some women are content to be hardworking wives and mothers of the home, others strive for a distant point with which to have a voice in what some consider as a man’s world. Across the world, many countries are a patriarchy-in which the male is the figurehead of a position in society. Different cultures, religions, and beliefs struggle against the rising desires of women to become successful leaders. Some women struggle for education to lead into corporate business, and others women are thrust into this position upon circumstance. Women just want to be heard and recognized for their place in life. Centuries ago women were to be quiet, unassuming, and dominated in society. As the views of humanity have changed, the views toward women have changed.
