Gender Norms In Today's Society

Gender norms are relics of a time where society was less advanced and a division between women and men was almost necessary. The traditional nuclear family is an example of this division where the man is the sole provider for the household. While economic downturns and social revolutions of the 60s and 70s have driven women to become more independent, albeit slowly, there is still a long way to go for women and men to be on completely equal footing. There are many factors that contribute to current inequalities and some solutions can be implemented to close the gender gap. The reduction and eventual eradication of gender must first be achieved through the equal socialization of both sexes in most aspects of society, both sexes must receive equal treatment from the government and judiciary systems, and toxic gender norms must be stopped, and eventually male and female individuals will not feel the need to adhere to the binary. Currently, from early childhood and throughout adulthood, male and female individuals are both socialized very differently. Early on, female children are socialized to be more concerned with their appearance through their toys and implicit suggestions from their parents.
