Ballet is a classical dance form that has graced the world with its beauty and elegance since the 15th century. It originated in the Italian renaissance and further developed and reached its peak in the French courts during the reign of the Sun King, King Louis XIV. It is a dance and sport that requires tremendous athletic ability but still an effortless presentation.
Generally the techniques are lightweight, direct and could have quick or sustained movement. It is a locomotive dance. They are usually stretched upwards vertically. Running, leaping, turning, twirling and hopping are dominant forms of movement. The choreography varies depending on the performance and the style of the choreographer. Ballet sometimes can be seen as strict and

It is a high class and well respected dance form. People who go to see ballet shows expect beautiful performances, even if they do not know the meaning set out by the choreographer just the movements and costumes—which is part of the dance form—is very appealing. Ballet is more than a dance it is a way of life that encourages transcendence of earthly limits as well as determination, not to stop when you get it right but resilience to achieve perfection until you cant get it
The word and the times have changed and growing steadily make everything has evolved to adapt to the modern era. Thus, it includes a ballet dancer as well not only practiced the choreography. Classical ballet is a traditional and a formal style that required a vigorous technique such as pointe work and turnout of the legs. Ballet can be combined with other types of music and movement like hip hop, jazz, tap and more. I believe that ballet is an elegant and flowing dance that can be combined with music and body movements. One of my favorite ballet dancer is Misty Copeland. She learned ballet very quickly when she stared, one technique that takes long time to learn is pointe, which is to support all the body weight in your feet, and Copeland learned to do it in just of three months.
Ballet traces back to the 15-century Italian renaissance court; Ballet is known as the mother of all dance due to its influence on any style of dance no matter how small. In the 15th century ballet was a form of entertainment for the Italian Renaissance court. These performances took place in balls and banquets. (“Ballet”) Ballet one of its first performances included aristocratic amateurs with poetry and song alongside the production. (“Ballet”) During the 15th century, France also became influence with ballet. (“A Brief History of Ballet - Illustrated by Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre.”) The influenced of ballet in France was because of Catherine de Medici in 1533. (“Ballet”) She married the French King Henry II which allowed from French and
Gender dictates various components of American life: political quarrels, typical company employee hierarchies, social norms, the list continues. This year’s presidential election proves this statement to be true; as Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump bump heads against notions of foreign policy and tax reform, American voters have divided themselves into a category of either for or against women’s equality. Trump’s recent rape allegations has portrayed him as sexist, allowing Clinton to make arguments against him and advocate for women’s rights. Besides politics, gender guides child development, teaching children what “roles” both men and women must play in order to be deemed acceptable. This is why the term “CEO”
Ballet is an athletic art form that utilizes muscle control, flexibility, and physical strength. It requires extreme discipline from the dancers and takes an extreme amount of mental concentration. This discipline causes dancers to have success throughout life and specifically in academic studies. There are many ways that dance can affect the success of a person’s life; however, there are two in specific that make dancers generally more successful. To begin, ballet causes dancers to be self-motivated workers; dancers cannot rely on others to push them to be better, but must have the drive within themselves.
Young girls and women symbolize femininity with being a ballerina. Kelso comments that in the shadows of the spotlight lurks an abusive world of eating disorders, verbal harassment, fierce competition, injuries, fatigued, and malnourished dancers (Kelso, 2003). In today’s world of ballet, dancers suffer from always being in pain, worrying their body image is not the right look they need to have to get lead roles resulting in the development of eating disorders, and male ballet dancers are stereotyped as being homosexual when most of the male dancers are in fact heterosexual.
The Company, made up of 69 dancers and 20 nationalities, performs a diverse and acclaimed repertoire ranging from full-length classical ballets to masterworks by George Balanchine, and new works and world premieres by today's finest contemporary choreographers. Boston Ballet School is one of the largest ballet schools in the world, with education programs taking place throughout New England and pre-professional training of the highest caliber.
Ballet dancers have always been expected to resemble a certain body type. They are known to be “very thin with small breasts and narrow hips; their legs are long and lean; their arms are long and slender; their torsos are short with a flat stomach and abdomen; their heads are small atop a long, slender neck.”(Ritenburg 75) George Balanchine, a famous artistic director and choreographer for the New York City Ballet, first desired this physique for the modern balle...
In the 1660s, King Louis XIV created the world’s first ballet school. This consisted of codified movement rather than the social court dances that were seen during the Renaissance period. King Louis XIV and Jean Baptiste-Lully worked side by side and performed many controversial ballets during their time. The society was very proper and they tended to push the boundaries. Because the King had such a priority to perfect his ballet technique and take lessons every day, the dance started to spread throughout France.
Ballet is a beautiful and romantic type of performance art. It originated in the Italian court systems in the 15th century (Jonas). Since its origination, ballet has undergone many changes and gained worldwide recognition. Filled with elaborate costumes, cheering audiences, lights, weightless movements and beauty; ballet is admired by many. On the magical stage ballerinas can become whoever they wan to be, and perform in a world of fantasy. For these reasons, children, especially little girls, all over the world dream of becoming ballerinas when they grow up. However, becoming a professional ballerina is an extremely difficult accomplishment, in which few will achieve (Kelso 1). The world of ballet may seem to be filled with glitz and glamor but, behind the curtain there is an entirely different story. There are extreme demands and pressures put on these young dancers to be very thin and nearly perfect. Some of which include body and weight demands, competition, and social pressures. These constant pressures can lead to a negative body-image and even debilitating eating disorders (Price and Pettijohn).
Ballet has molded me into a person that smiles through hardships and lives for the daily challenges. Additionally, my ballet training allows me to put other things into perspective and is applicable to my academics. Often times, math and physic systems of forces, centroids and torque can be applied to ballet movements. For example, a simple pirouette (turn) is possible because of the torque the legs and arms create, the rotational momentum of the body, and the force the legs create against the ground. Furthermore, my ballet training is much more than leading an important role. Over the course of a thousand of ballet classes I have developed the ability to listen and attentively follow choreography. Also, the creative aspect of ballet adds a unique element to the way I think, solve problems, and view life.
Ballet has been an art form since the late fifteenth century, but society did not truly see the impact of ballet until the nineteenth century. Modern day thinkers possess the idea that ballet began with tutus and pointe shoes, but it wasn’t until the nineteenth century that this opinion was observed. Ballet has come a long way. It has survived the turmoil of many wars and has changed itself by accepting new ideas and impressing the audience with its unique stylistic views.
in order to succeed. Ballet should be recognized as a sport due to the fitness, dedication, and
Those who are not a part of the dance community are the ones that are most likely against male dancers. It is understandable to know that those outside of the dance community may not understand or may have certain beliefs that males should not partake in such a feminized hobby/sport but, it is more believable to understand that anyone should be able to pursue their dreams and talent and that stereotypes should not matter. As our generation grows, the more accepting and opening we should be towards gender equality in sports such as dancing. A peer reviewed journal by Jenifer Fisher discusses how she believes the people in the dance community and outside of the community try to make male dancers seem “macho”. She states this strategy is, “that ballet is a tough as football, a “real” man’s game,” (Fisher46). This statement goes to show that male dancers partake in tough circumstances just as a football player, or any other masculine sport. Therefore, male dancers should be seen as equal individuals compared to those in the more masculine sports scenery. Also, in another brief article by Richard Schneider, he states that “many male dancers and choreographers of the 20th century took pains to show that dance was just as masculine as, say, baseball or fencing” (Schneider). This statement is saying that male dancer encountered painful endurances to be accepted as masculine. In Negotiating the gay male stereotype in ballet and modern dance, Katherine Polasek and Emily Roper addressed the peer pressure amongst male dancers and what they experienced. A participant and also male dancer named Jonah explained: “I actually got beat up a couple times.” Also, in an article on balletinthecity they talk about different stories in which male dancers receive harshness and how they overcome and battle
