In many different professions, there are personality and gender differences that make the work environment unique. In the medical profession, there are personality and gender differences among specialties. Research supports that many medical students with certain personality attributes, are selecting medical specialties with matching qualities. Gender is another factor that has a significant role in the selection process. While these factors do not determine the success of the physician, personality and gender have an important effect on how medical students are selecting their medical specialties. Each clinical specialty has its own environments, responsibilities, and patient exposure. In 1986, 476 participants from three different London Universities completed questionnaires that were headed with one of the following specialties; anesthetics, general practice, gynecology, hospital medicine, pediatrics, pathology, psychiatry, radiology, and surgery. The surprising results from this study presented that pediatricians were seen as the most emotionally stable group and the most emotionally demanding specialty. The anesthesiologist were seen as boring, but also the least likely to abuse their power, while surgeons and hospitalist specialist were viewed as “unapologetic” and less focused on patient care and more focused on the problem (Furnham, 1986). The stereotypes presented in Furnham’s study are still prevalent in medical students, which is ultimately leading to the imbalance of specialties in the medical labor market. Graduates from Cornell University were surveyed in 1989 about the important deciding factors for their specialty choice, 13% switched their preferred specialty from internal medicine, pediatrics, and family practice due to lifestyle reasons (Mowbray, 1989). The aspects that affect the decision- making process have been researched before, during, and after medical school. While some students enter medical school with a specialty in mind that never change, other students are influenced by external factors such as financial success, academic performance, program curriculum, overall workload, and patient exposure. The biggest factors which help lead to the ultimate selection are personality and gender. History still concludes that men are more prominent in the surgical field, while women tend to cluster in specialties like pediatrics, psychiatry, or obstetrics and gynecology. By knowing the effects that gender can have on a specialty choice, will hopefully influence the participation of gender diverse education across all medical practices. A study performed from 1959-1960 discovered, “The sex of the doctor and the performance in medical school predict specialty choice better than personality factors (Walton, 1969). Despite this evidence, personality inventory can be a very useful tool to help predict if a specialty will align with a student’s character. Melvin Kooner, an anthropologist who entered medical school in his mid-thirties, characterizes physicians as “tough, brilliant, knowledgeable, hardworking, and hard on themselves.” (Kooner, 1998, pg. 374) Many personal conversations with medical students, residents, and attending physicians from a variety of specialties confirm Kooner’s assessment. Doctors work hard, work long hours, deal regularly with life-and-death situations, and make substantial personal sacrifices to practice in their field. These attributes of medical practice can provide a great deal of satisfaction to the aspiring or practicing physician, but can also be a source of professional and personal distress. Burnout or the experience of long-term emotional and physical exhaustion may result from an inability to cope with the demands of work-related responsibilities and personal obligations. If untreated, burnout may lead to more serious consequences such as depression and suicide.

The path of a young scientist to the career of their choice is driven by many factors. Preferences strongly influence a person’s decision to enter a certain field, but so does ability. In addition, gender is a major factor that can be attributed to a young person’s decision for entering a scientific career. In a way, gender plays two roles. It can influence career choice from the beginning, shaping preferences, and well as having an influence on “making it” into a specific field. In scientific fields, it is not uncommon for job desirability to increase when a particular career is viewed as “men’s work” versus “women’s work”.
I began my college career unsure of the path ahead of me. I knew I had a passion for medicine, however, I did not know which direction I would take. With the expansive amount of options offered within the fields of science and medicine, it was difficult to narrow down exactly what direction I wanted to take. I gained some clarity the summer of my sophomore year when I stayed at a close friend’s home, whose father, a practicing Medical Physician, became somewhat of a mentor to me. The passionate way in which he discussed the practice of medicine led me to develop an interest in pursuing a career as a physician. In the words of Soren Kierkegaard: “Personality is only ripe when a man has made the truth his own.” There are many different people in the world. Everyone has a different personality that makes him/her unique. The tenth grade class at Presbyterian Christian School took an academic test and three personality test to discover potential future careers. ACT Incorporated developed the PLAN to show our estimated ACT score, and the possible careers we would do the best in. We also took three personality tests to discover our true personality. KRB Consulting Company made a test where we rate ourselves according the adjectives that best describe us. The second test we took was “The Colors of Careers”, given to us by the assistant to the president of Jones County Junior College, Gwen Magee. The final test we took was the “Jung Typology Test”. The purpose of this paper is to discover the differences in our personalities and the careers that follow our certain personality.

Managers seem to inherit a strong trust in the authority of personality traits to forecast behavior at the work area. In order to determine whether or not clinical medicine was the right career for me, I started shadowing Dr. Richard Turner in the ER. Through my experiences with him, I learned that medicine is a problem solving process. As I watched, he would take a patient's history and try to piece together the correct diagnosis by deciding which scenarios were more likely than others. I was attracted by the dynamic nature of each patient's diagnosis and the necessity for an open mind. My hobby of flying has taught me to look at everything in life with a new perspective and to assess the situation from as many angles as possible. Watching Dr. Turner has confirmed my perception of a medical career and the nature of the work involved. Since I love puzzles and problems, the problem solving aspect also increased my desire to become a physician.
According to Holland (1985), the choice of a career is an extension of one’s personality into the world of work. Individuals choose careers that satisfy their preferred personal orientations. Holland developed six modal personal styles and six matching work envi¬ronments: realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enter¬prising, and conventional. A person is attracted to the particular role demand of an occupational environ-ment that meets his or her needs. For example, some¬one who is socially oriented would seek out a work environment that provides interactions with others, such as nursing in a hospital setting. Holland and his colleagues have developed a number of instruments (e.g., the Self-Directed Search) designed to assist in identifying individual personality traits and matching those traits to occupational groups. Holland’s theory assesses each individual in terms of two or three most prominent personality types and matching each type with the environmental aspects of potential careers. It is predicted that the better the match, the better the congruence, satisfaction, and persistence (Holland, 1985). Over the last years, attention to public health issues has been increasing as well as aspirations to high health standards. Medical professions are in high demand because of the need of constant improvements of the health care system. The medical field offers a wide range of valued career paths and opportunities that differentiate by their responsibilities, obligations, educational requirements, and salary. When considering a career in health care, it is very important to analyze all the aspects involved and then determine the choice that best fit the person needs.
Within Holland’s theory there are six personality types which correspond with a set of occupations. Holland proposed “that [job] satisfaction is highest and turnover is lowest when personality and occupation are in agreement” (Robbins & Judge, 2009, 122). Thus, persons working in jobs which are congruent with their personalities are more likely to have job satisfaction, than persons working in incongruent occupations (Robbins & Judge, 2009). With this information, managers could dramatically increase the job satisfaction of their workforce by placing employees into job opportunities which matched the employee’s personality. If Holland’s theory is correct and the employees are honest on the Vocational Preference Inventory examination then the theory could be an effective tool for decreasing job

Throughout my life, I have worked towards one goal which is to become a doctor. Medicine offers the opportunity for me to integrate different scopes of science while trying to improve human life. Medicine has intrigued me throughout all my life because it??s a never ending mystery and every answer has questions, and vice versa. Upon entering my career, I had assumed that professional and financial success would surely bring personal fulfillment. This realization triggered a process of self-searching that led me to medicine. The commitment to provide others with healthcare is a serious decision for anyone. As I examined my interests and goals, however, I underwent a process of personal growth that has propelled me towards a career as a physician. A career in medicine will allow me to integrate thoroughly my passion for science into a public-service framework. Since childhood, I have loved acquiring scientific knowledge, particularly involving biological processes. During my undergraduate studies, I displayed my ability to juggle competing demands while still maintaining my academic focus; I have succeeded at school while volunteering part time, spending time with family and friends, and working part-time. To better serve my expected patient population, I worked over my English and Korean language skills. I have come to discover that a job and even a good income, without another significant purpose, will not bring satisfaction. I planed to utilize my assets, namely my problem- solving affinity, strong work ethic, and interpersonal commitment, to craft a stimulating, personally rewarding career in medicine. I have taken stock of myself, considering my skills, experiences, and goals. I have looked to family and friends, some of whom are doctors, for advice. Because of this self-examination, I have decided to pursue a career in health care. The process has been difficult at times but always illuminating. Throughout it all, I have never lost confidence - the confidence that I will actively absorb all available medical knowledge, forge friendships with fellow students, and emerge from my training as a skilful and caring physician.
