Gender difference is always exist since the birth of human. In all ages, female is usually be in weak position compare to male. As Tanne said, there is no unmarked women. Why there is no unmarked woman? Because most of females are effected by males judgment. Therefore, i strongly agree with Tanne’s idea that there is no unmarked woman, and women has there own right to chose will be marked or not.
For the first half of chapter “ there is no unmarked woman,” Tanne was describing the details of three women’s dress include their hair style, makeup, clothes, shoes, etc. In order to avoid the judgment and impression on male’s mind. In addition, she just realized the thing as following:

She has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Vogue. In this article, she focus on woman are judged and estimated by the way they dress. She emphases on “there is no unmarked women.” First, the article starts by observing three womens dress. During the observation, Tannen discovered that women are making deliberate decisions on their appearance to avoid the judgment from men. In addition, Tannen also pointed out a new meaning of the word “marked.” Marked is a word usually used to change the meaning of a word by adding a linguistic participle that has no meaning on its own. But in her article, mark is the way to divide male and female. Most of time, men can choose styles that are marked, but they do not have to, and in this group none did.(142) Moreover, “Ms” and “ Mrs” are the big part that showed women has been judged according to Ralph Fasold’s research. Furthermore, Tannen has also presents that males were born with modified female bodies. Through out her writing, Tanne are talking about the inequality between genders could be seen as a feminist, which is the purpose of this essay. However, she is unhappy that women cannot be unmarked. Today, women and men are more socially equal then 1993 when Tannen had written this short essay. Through these twenty years women have accomplished many things in different areas that set them equal to the supposedly inferior, men. In my opinion there is no unmarked human being. You are marked by just saying you are male or that you are female. Men are marked just like women are just a little more discreet. I feel that men are noticeably marked in areas where they are the minority. In Tannen’s short essay she says “Some years ago I was at a small working conference of four women and eight men.” We can infer out of the group that the men were the majority and the women were the minority. Also that there was some bias in the information she shared. This is why I assumed Tannen moved towards the women in her observation because they were the minority. When people are the minorities they tend to be looked at differently and marked as so. For instance nursing and secretary jobs are held by more women than men. When you see a male nurse or a male secretary, he is marked. He is the one out of all the female nurses who is marked because he is the minority. It is vice versa for women as well. For example in politics and construction where men are dominating those work areas. You see a female governor or construction worker, you know that she is marked because she is the minority in this

Women respond very well to tone and word choice, which Tannen uses to her advantage. She uses personal experience to relate with her more female audience. For example, in the criticism section she uses a scenario that occurred between a male and female editors. Tannen “appreciated her tentativeness” that she gave Tannen when wanting to cut out part of her story(301). In contrast to that her male editor gave her a much different response, saying “call me when you have something new to say”(301). By stating a scenario with two very different outcomes, she falls more bias to women. This is effective to her more female audience because it paints women in a positive light and paints the men in a very negative light. The obvious bias towards women can arguably hurt her more than it could help her. Tannen automatically outs her male audience at a very awkward side, and makes it impossible for them to feel sympathy towards her. This hurts Tannen’s opportunity for having a broad audience, but for what she wrote it for she is very effective. If we are simply talking about how effective it was for women then Tannen hit home with them. Tannen’s choice of using what men say is also very smart, and helps with her effectiveness. She heard a man say, that after working for two women he realized neither of them have a sense of humor(304). By using examples like these

Deborah Gray White’s Ar’n’t I a Woman? details the grueling experiences of the African American female slaves on Southern plantations. White resented the fact that African American women were nearly invisible throughout historical text, because many historians failed to see them as important contributors to America’s social, economic, or political development (3). Despite limited historical sources, she was determined to establish the African American woman as an intricate part of American history, and thus, White first published her novel in 1985. However, the novel has since been revised to include newly revealed sources that have been worked into the novel. Ar’n’t I a Woman? presents African American females’ struggle with race and gender through the years of slavery and Reconstruction. The novel also depicts the courage behind the female slave resistance to the sexual, racial, and psychological subjugation they faced at the hands of slave masters and their wives. The study argues that “slave women were not submissive, subordinate, or prudish and that they were not expected to be (22).” Essentially, White declares the unique and complex nature of the prejudices endured by African American females, and contends that the oppression of their community were unlike those of the black male or white female communities.
In “Marked Woman, Unmarked Men”, Deborah Tannen argues many points about how women are targeted based on their style choices, such as makeup, clothing and hair, as well as their last names, and titles they choose to take on. Tannen argues her stance when she says, “Each of the women at the conference had to make decisions about hair, clothing, makeup and accessories…. Men can choose styles that are marked, but they don 't have to… . Unlike the women, they had the option of being unmarked.” here you can clearly see that Tannen is illustrating her point by showing the difference in how men are looked at compared to women. She clearly believes that men don’t have to take their style, and lack of makeup, into consideration. In other words, this is a perfect representation of her argument in “Marked Women, Unmarked Men”
This theme is evident in the doubling of stockings with the girl’s natural black legs. The red stockings, which represent sexual, material desires, are contrasted with the natural, elegant beauty of the legs of the black girl. The stockings highlight only the legs, separating them from the girl as a whole and allowing for easier objectification, specifically by young white males. However, the girl knows this, as she has put the stockings on and is being told so by the narrator, who represents the black community. The narrator also clearly recognizes the girl’s beauty, and her beauty is further highlighted in the fact that she is clothed in silk, which relates to royalty and comfortability.
Tannen states "Granted, women have Lower status than men in our society" rendering that Tannen knows about how today 's society sees women as the role follows the males. What it means to be a woman or man is going to differ based on the culture, geographical location, and time. A lady is an object, one which men attempt to dominate. A man craves to get a hold of this being beneath his command, and forever have her at his disposal. In her piece “Size Six: The Western Women’s Harem,” published in 2002, Fatema Mernissi illustrates how Eastern and Western women are subjugated by the control of men. Mernissi argues that though she may have derived from a society where a woman has to cover her face, a Western woman has to face daily atrocities far worse then ones an Eastern woman will encounter. Moreover, Mernissi’s core dogma in “Size 6: The Western Women's Harem” is that Western women are not more fortunate than women raised into harems in other societies. Additionally, she asserts that though women in the Western world are given liberties, they coincide with the unattainable ideals of what is aesthetically pleasing. Furthermore, to strengthen her argument towards her wavering audience, Mernissi’s main approach in her paper is to get the reader to relate with her issue by means of an emotional appeal, while also utilizing both the ethical and logical appeal to support her thesis.

Gender systems are generally considered inherent to humanity, and are seldom questioned or altered. This has led to the marginalization and discrimination of individuals who diverge from the implemented structure.
Deborah Tannen’s essay, “There Is No Unmarked Woman”, explores the idea of “marked” and “unmarked” words, styles, titles, and how females have no ability to choose an unmarked position in life. She posits that “The unmarked forms of most English words also convey ‘male’” (88). Tannen is incorrect in her premises because females are able to choose unmarked hair and clothing styles, men are marked just as often as women, and many unmarked forms of words no longer convey “male.”
