THEORIES REGARDING A HUMAN BEING’S GENDER DEVELOPMENT.
Many factors and components contribute to gender development in individuals. The following paper details four theoretical approaches-biological, interpersonal, cultural, and critical, and the role each play in determination of a human’s gender development. In addition, a brief explication of each theory is most significant as well as the most feasible in regards to gender development.
THE THEORETICAL APPROACHES
BIOLOGICAL THEORY. Begin with a look at the biological aspect of gender development. “Biological theory maintains that biological characteristics such as chromosomes, hormonal activities, and brain specialization account for gender differences” (Woods, 2014). Within a child’s developing brain, internal stimuli pursue certain gender portrayals through action. Through these various trials, the child is able to sculpt their personal gender constancy as well as gender schema. Ultimately, this helps determine the child’s own views of feminine and masculine characteristics.
GENDER DEVELOPMENT IN CULTURE
CULTURE. Cultural aspects provide various insights and influences from biological as well as interpersonal factors, in regards to numerous gender roles of women and men. Notably, cultures manipulate and sculpt the young minds of individuals, within that particular society. Through anthropology and symbolic interactionism, cultures tend to mold the young minds and attitudes within those members in that society.
Anthropology. Children develop their first sense of self at around age four, when they develop metacognition. (Berk, 2006) In pursuit of their self, they start to develop personal identities, informing their likes and dislikes as well as their disposition. Although children are born into a certain sex, they do not immediately develop a sense of gender. Their gender forms at the same time as their sense of self, by observing their outside environment. But even before the child understands their sense of self, they are already placed into gender specific play from around age 2 (Zosuls, 2007).
The information acquired over the semester, whether through text or visual media, vividly brought the importance of knowing how one’s gender is identified and developed.
There are many different facets to the nature versus nurture argument that has been going on for decades. One of these, the influence of nature and nurture on gender roles and behaviors, is argued well by both Deborah Blum and Aaron Devor, both of whom believe that society plays a large role in determining gender. I, however, have a tendency to agree with Blum that biology and society both share responsibility for these behaviors. The real question is not whether gender expression is a result of nature or nurture, but how much of a role each of these plays.

A dominant debate in current psychological research is one on gender development. Psychologists try to understand relative importance of social and cognitive factors. Various theories are brought up in this field and in this essay two of the most standard theory in this field are going to be explained. The theories covered in this essay relate to aspects of children’s thinking that are central to their gender development. This will include, Kohlberg‘s theory of gender development (1966) and Bandura‘s theory of social cognitive development (1986). Introduction The topic of gender differences must understandably be approached with caution in our modern world. Emotionally charged and fraught with ideas about political correctness, gender can be a difficult subject to address, particularly when discussed in correlation to behavior and social behavior. Throughout history, many people have strove to understand what makes men and women different. Until the modern era, this topic was generally left up to religious leaders and philosophers to discuss. However, with the acquisition of more specialized medical knowledge of human physiology and the advent of anthropology, we now know a great deal more about gender differences than at any other point in history.
Psychologist, Richard A. Lippa, takes on the challenge of proving the concept that an individual’s idea of gender is derived from their brain, an issue otherwise recognized as “nature vs. nurture” in his book, Gender, Nature, and Nurture. Francis Galton, defines nature and nurture, as, “Nature is all that a man brings with himself into the world; nurture is every influence from without that affects him after birth.” Galton emphasizes the fact that nature produces the infant, with direct influences, determining both “growth of body and mind” (Galton) while nurture is an alteration of the environment for the comfort of the infant. Lippa establishes that each gender displays different levels of hormones, and physical capabilities, which will contribute to “nature.” An intriguing study conducted by Henry F. Harlow, whether the gender of a monkey can be determined, with or without the aid of parental influence. Regardless of whether the monkeys had a parent, the behaviors that they demonstrated in their natural environment were the same. The fundamental principle behind this is due to the fact that males were “influenced by the exposure to testosterone.” (122) As human beings, we vary in physical attributes, which subconsciously come into play when it comes to our preferences. Gender is such a ubiquitous notion that humans assume gender is biological. However, gender is a notion that is made up in order to organize human life. In order to understand these perspectives, we must view gender as a social institution. Society bases gender on sex and applies a sex category to people in daily life by recognizing gender markers. Sex is the foundation to which gender is created. We must understand the difference between anatomical sex and gender in order to grasp the development of gender. First, I will be assessing existing perspectives on the social construction of gender. Next, I will analyze three case studies and explain how gender construction is applied in order to provide a clearer understanding of gender construction. Lastly, I will develop my own case study by analyzing the movie Mrs. Doubtfire and apply gender construction.
Anthropology is the study of people in all times and places. Anthropology is a holistic discipline, meaning that it is concerned with both biological and cultural perspectives. There are two sides to anthropology: applied and theoretical. Applied anthropology is used to recognize and resolve modern problems in society. Theoretical anthropology uses critical and historical concepts to identify the development of contemporary culture in the world (Bidney 1968).
