Assignment #7 First, briefly define sex, gender, and stereotypes. Sex is the biological characteristics that society associates with being either male or female, while gender is the cultural and social meanings attached to being masculine and feminine that, in turn, influence personal identities. On the other hand, stereotypes are exaggerated and often untrue beliefs about a certain group of people that are applied to individuals members of that group. Describe what media example you chose. The media example I chose was TV advert for Campbell’s Star Wars soups. The commercial opens up with a father imitating the Star War’s theme song while holding a spoon of soup for his son. While placing the spoon in his son’s mouth, the father impersonates
Darth Vader and proclaims “Cooper, I am your father.” The camera then pans to the left to reveal another man who says in the same impression as the first man, “No no, I am your father” while placing another spoon of soup into their son’s mouth. The commercial then pans out to show the two fathers happily conversing with their son in between them about how the second father could instead be Chewbacca. The advert then ends with the cap card: Campbell’s - Made for Real Real Life. How does your example illustrate stereotypes relating to food and gender? Or, conversely, does it challenge widely held stereotypes? My particular advert challenged the widely held stereotype that a happy and thriving family must consist of two parents, a mother and a father, and their children. Instead, the commercial presents two homosexual fathers feeding their son a bowl of soup while simultaneously telling jokes by making impressions of famous pop culture characters. The TV advert also disputes the stigma that females are better equipped to raise children compared to males by displaying the two fathers feeding their son soup, who happily consumes it, while also telling jokes and entertaining their son. Is sexuality used in your example? Does your example reinforce heteronormativity? Explain. Sexuality is heavily utilized in my example to object heteronormativity. Instead of showcasing a mother and a father feeding their son, which they easily could’ve done, the commercial alternately presents two homosexual fathers giving their adopted son spoonfuls of soup.
The topic of over-generalizing characteristics of a man or woman has become a controversial debate. While both sides have valid points, Monika Bartyzel, a freelance writer who created Girls in Film, a weekly feature on “femme-centric film news and concerns” at theweek.com, argues in her gender stereotype article “Girls on Film: The Real Problem with the Disney Princess Brand” Disney has gone against their own perception of a princess, leaving young girls to believe they are only worth value if they are pink, sparkling and dependent on a man.
The word gender refers to a general classification of human beings into male and female with socially and culturally constructed characteristics, behaviors, attributes and roles preconceived and labelled as appropriate for each class. The society and culture today have placed human beings in a box which to a large extent dictates how we act in the world.

“Women need to..” is the first line featured in the new ad campaign for UN Women, an organization focusing on the gender equality and the empowerment of women. The ad features a woman with a Google search bar obscuring her mouth and autocomplete results for the incomplete phrase “women need to…” These include “women need to be put in their place”, “women need to know their place”, “women need to be controlled”, and “women need to be disciplined”. The small print of each ad also reads “Actual Google search on 09/03/13.” UN Women successfully uses these results to illustrate the still- present ideas of sexual discrimination. Girls are supposed to play with dolls, wear pink, and grow up to become princesses. Boys are suppose to play with cars, wear blue, and become firefighters and policemen. These are just some of the common gender stereotypes that children grow up to hear. Interactions with toys are one of the entryway to different aspects of cognitive development and socialism in early childhood. As children move through development they begin to develop different gender roles and gender stereotypes that are influenced by their peers and caregivers. There is a common saying ‘that all men are from Mars’ and ‘all women are from Venus’ which has the tendency to stereotype the individual differences as gender differences. When it comes to psychological traits like empathy, sexual attitudes and behaviours, and personality traits like extroversion and openness there is no clear evidence to suggest men and women can be divided into two distinct groups. Many think of jocks, nerds, or popular kids; gender stereotyping is very similar. Gender stereotypes are thoughts of what the gender is supposed to behave like (Rathus, 2010). One example of a gender stereotype for a man would be a worker for the family, and a women stereotype would be a stay at home mom. Though in todays age we don’t see this as much, but it is still around us. In different situations both gender roles and stereotypes are said and done on a daily basis and we can’t avoid them because everyone is different.

Stereotypical behavior is not a new trend, but rather an ongoing lifestyle for today’s society. Gender stereotyping, a sub-category of stereotypes, opens many revelations, developments, and behaviors. While there are psychologists that differ in opinion, education and employment seems to be the primary sources where it is believed that most people both obtains and acts out their stereotypical behavior (Sax & Harper 671).
Gender stereotyping has been ongoing throughout history. The media has been distorting views by representing gender unrealistically and inaccurately. It created an image of what "masculinity" or "femininity" should be like and this leads to the image being "naturalized" in a way (Gail and Humez 2014). The media also attempts to shape their viewers into something ‘desirable’ to the norm. This essay will focus on the negative impacts of gender-related media stereotypes by looking at the pressures the media sets on both women and men, and also considering the impacts on children.
