Nominated for three Academy Awards and winner of Best Original Song (IMDb, n.d), Monsters, Inc. is “well-liked by many” thus qualifying as an example of popular cinema (Storey, 2001). Produced by Pete Doctor and David Silverman, Monsters, Inc. tells the tale of two monsters, Mike and Sully, who both work at a utility company called Monsters, Inc(operated), where children’s screams are harvested as power. One night, Sully stayed late as a favor to Mike to finish his paperwork and noticed a door left on the scare floor. The door was left by Randal- a very competitive co-worker, who planned to kidnap the child to test his ‘scream machine’ that sucks the screams out of children at a much more efficient rate than scaring them. is gender. In both the human and monster world there are very clear gender roles between men and women, with the exception of one character, Roz. In the film, all the monsters who work on the scare floor are male, all the supervisors are male, all the CDA workers appear to be male, and the owner of Monsters, Inc., Mr. Waternoose, is male. In short, anyone with authority (excluding Roz) is male. The only representation of female characters (except Roz) in the monster world shows them vacuuming, babysitting, or in some type of administrative/ hospitality position within Monstropolis. The reason why Roz is the exception to this is because at the very end of the film it is revealed to the viewer that she is in charge of the CDA, but get this, all throughout the movie up until this point she was an administrator. The only other reoccurring monster female character in the film is Mike’s love interest, Celia. Celia is an administrator/ greeter at Monsters, Inc. who resembles medusa from Greek mythology. Celia is a great example of a character who shows both gender, and sexuality as structures of identity. Gender, because she fits into the perpetual gender roles Monsters, Inc. pushes and sexuality because although she is clearly supposed to be medusa she has sex appeal, such as her long slender legs and exaggerated feminine features, even though medusa in Greek mythology is considered to be a repulsive monster. There is also an interesting scene when Mike takes Celia out to dinner and the whole restaurant gets fumigated and the only person wearing a cone after the fumigation is Celia. It is unsure whether any other female characters are wearing the cone but during the scene that we see her with it she charges Mike and her snake-like hair tries to bite him. What boy hasn't wanted to chase their younger siblings around their house with pegs on all ten of their fingers pretending to be a monster/ we the movie, Edward Scissorhands (1990), scouts this captivating idea and basically turns it into a movie. The film was directed by Tim Burton, who also directed the movies, The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Corpse Bride(2005), and Batman 1989. According to Creed, there are seven possible faces of female monstrosity in the cinematic language: archaic mother, monstrous womb, vampire, witch possessed monster, deadly femme castrator, and the castrating mother. These elements of the female form in cinema help Creed’s definition of the female body as alien and an oppressive realm that provokes feelings of disgust. Creed states that “Horror emerges from the fact that woman has broken with her proper feminine role as she has ‘made a spectacle of herself’ and put her unsocialized body on display” (46). She goes on to relate this to the film The Exorcist (1973) and the young girl’s gradual possession, “with its emphasis on filthy utterances and depraved acts, seems so shocking… mockery of all established forms of propriety, of the clean and proper body and of the law itself define her as abject.Yet, despite her monstrous appearance and shocking utterances, she remains a strongly ambiguous figure.” (46). Jeffery Cohen's first thesis states “the monster's body is a cultural body”. Monsters give meaning to culture. A monsters characteristics come from a culture's most deep-seated fears and fantasies. Monsters are metaphors and pure representative allegories. What a society chooses to make monstrous says a lot about that society’s people. Monsters help us express and find our darkest places, deepest fears, or creepiest thoughts. Monsters that scare us,vampires, zombies, witches, help us cope with what we dread most in life. Fear of the monstrous has brought communities and cultures together. Society is made up of different beliefs, ideas, and cultural actions. Within society there are always outcasts, people that do not fit into the norm or do not follow the status quo. What is gender? The answer to that is not so simple. “Gender is what culture makes out of the ‘raw material’ of biological sex,” (Unger and Crawford, 1995). Also, there is a difference between what is gender identity and what is a gender role; a difference which seems to be even more difficult to differentiate between than the words “gender” and “sex”. Media and other parts of our culture seem to believe they know the difference, yet up until a certain period in time, the same stereotypical characters were portrayed and used as role models for others in most media. Women characters being the helpless victims, while the strong men would come to save them (including television shows such as Miami Vice or Three’s Company). Today there is a whole slew of shows and movies, which are redefining and re-categorizing the stereotypical language in relation to gender. One such television series is Buffy, The Vampire Slayer (starring Sarah Michelle Gellar). And although it may seem like a typical teen-angst show, and the main character is a “whiny, rich” girl who fights demons , many people believed it would be exactly like the film (of the same name) which came out five years before the television show first aired in 1997. The film (starring Kristy Swanson) was trite and “airy”, and yet the television series proved those non-believers wrong. In a stereotypical world within the culture that the show represents, Buffy is doing a man’s “job”. She is fighting creatures double her size, and killing them. She is aggressive, outgoing, and determined. Words which are not “normally” used to describe women (without, of course, the word “bitch” trailing right behind them). In other cultures, women being the more aggressive and “take-charge” kind of person is the “norm”, but because we are living in a society, a culture, where even with the whole women’s suffrage being long passed, many people would still like to see women behave as dainty, quiet, and passive characters. In today 's society, gender stereotyping of men and women has influenced the society’s actions and how it has reflected in recent years. Everyday stereotype is being used whether if it’s on movies, workplaces, playgrounds, homes, or even magazines. There is gender diversity in the movie Grease which took place in 1978. This movie focuses on several different types of stereotyping throughout the movie. Two specific characters in which we are able to use as an example of gender stereotyping are Sandy and Danny. There has always been a specific boundary between a male and a female gender. There has been a large variety of horror films produced throughout the last fifty years. People are always going to be frightened and scared by different types of horror films. But, what type of horror film scares more people, and were men or women more frightened by these horror films? Each one of the horror films had its own agenda to frighten its audience using several different methods of horror. Some of these methods were more so directed at the female audience than the male audience. Most horror movies show the female as being vulnerable, because in real life females are defenseless against monsters.
Throughout time, women in movies and other similar texts are shown to be generally focused on men. This might make sense if every movie ever made was set in a time where women had absolutely no rights but of course, that is not the case. Older and more modern depictions of women in media, both show women whose lives revolve around men. Even movies that market their female characters as strong and powerful are still shown to be dependent on the male leads and puts them first. Also, since women in movies have more of a focus on men, female to female relationships suffer in the same films. There are very few exceptions to this unfortunate truth.
“Huxley portrays the female citizens of the World State as far more compliant than their male counterparts” (Fares). Although the book is mainly focused on the male characters, there were only three female characters. Lenina Crowne was the more developed character, and played an important role in this story. Also, Linda and Fanny were secondaries characters. Critics stated that the fact that Huxley “recycles famous names for comedic and ironic purposes . . . indicates that he thinks individual women have made few, if any substantive contributions to human development” (Horan). Throughout the book male characters only focused in the physical aspect of women. The “physical appearance determines how female characters are valued by others” (Horan). One of the most criticized characters based on their physical appearance was Linda. The people in the utopian society were referring to her as fat a woman. The book stated Linda as a: “Fat; having lost her youth; with bad teeth, and a blotched complexion, and that figure (Ford!)–you simply couldn’t look at her without feeling sick, yes, positively sick. So the best people were quite determined not to see Linda” (167,168). Huxley described Linda as a person with a bad physical aspect that is the main reason people were disgusted. Horror films are designed to frighten the audience and engage them in their worst fears, while captivating and entertaining at the same time. Horror films often center on the darker side of life, on what is forbidden and strange. These films play with society’s fears, its nightmare’s and vulnerability, the terror of the unknown, the fear of death, the loss of identity, and the fear of sexuality. Horror films are generally set in spooky old mansions, fog-ridden areas, or dark locales with unknown human, supernatural or grotesque creatures lurking about. These creatures can range from vampires, madmen, devils, unfriendly ghosts, monsters, mad scientists, demons, zombies, evil spirits, satanic villains, the possessed, werewolves and freaks to the unseen and even the mere presence of evil.

The first thing that the reader will notice regarding gender is the title of the play “A Doll’s House”. This reveals to the reader, Nora’s and possible Torvald’s status within the play. Nora is unable to be herself as she is not seen as an equal in her marriage. Instead, she is something to be admired and flaunted. This need for her to be something that Torvald can show off. Both Nora and Torvald are living lives based on illusion. Torvald has made Nora his perfect little doll so that he can look good. She thinks that he is a person with incredible strength, she becomes disillusioned with him at the end of the play when he exposes himself as just a man.
