This presentation was about the ongoing state of LGBT+ rights in Australia. This country is considered first world; however, the gay population suffer a lot of discrimination. Usually, most traditional families do not recognize their gay sons, and this is one of the reasons why they hide their sexuality. In addition, this minority is not allowed either to have a legal marriage or adopt a child. Consequently, the LGBT+ people do not receive benefits from the government and they have a high rate of suicide and depression. This event relates to the global issue of LGBT+ equality. Over the past decades, people have been accepting their sexuality and not hiding it. They want to express their love publically and have the same rights as hetero people.
All human beings are born with genes that are unique to them and make us the individuals we become. Traditionally, people involved in homosexual relationships have suffered social persecution in Australia, and there was no legal recognition of their relationship. In recent decades however, these social views have changed, and the law has adapted to reflect societies changing opinion of same-sex relationships. While there has been progress in the recognition of same-sex relationships, the ultimate goal of advocates for same-sex relationships is for them to be seen as equal to opposite-sex relationships, in all regards. The main focus point of this aim for equality is the legalisation of same-sex marriage, which is a highly controversial issue, and has proven difficult for supporters of same-sex relationships to achieve.
For many generations, especially in North America, homosexuality was not accepted in any way, shape, or form. Many believed that it was a medical illness that was curable, when in reality, people were, and still are, ignorant and could not come to terms that everyone in this world is different from one another. For many instances of being treated unjust, many individuals in the gay community did not want to “expose” themselves and remained in the “closet”. As means to make gays and lesbians proud and take a stand for who they are, a movement spread across internationally. This movement is known as “The Gay Liberation” movement which occurred between the late 1960s and the early to mid 1970s (“Gay Liberation”). The Gay Liberation movement urged individuals of the gay community to “come out,” revealing their sexuality to their loved ones as a form of activism, and to counter shame with gay pride (“Gay Liberation”). The Stonewall Riots are believed to have been the spark that ignited the rise of the Gay Liberation movement; it influenced the way the gay community is viewed socially and how their rights are politically present day.
In the following essay, I will cover the history of how homosexuals has been discriminates and treated different just because of their sexual orientation, the types of prejudices against them and initiatives individuals and government has implemented in the political, sociological and educational aspect to help them reach similar standards of life as straight people; and how population is opening their minds to understand this type of behavior, helping society and job market to open their doors to employment opportunities for the gay community.

The acceptance of “abnormal” sexualities has been a prolonged, controversial battle. The segregation is excruciating and the prejudice remarks are so spiteful that some people never truly recover. Homosexuals have been left suffering for ages. Life, for most homosexuals during the first half of the twentieth century, was mostly one of hiding: having to constantly hide their true feelings and tastes. Instead of restaurants and movies, they had to sit quiet in the dark and meet each other in concealed places such as bars. Homosexuals were those with “mental and psychic abnormalities” and were the victim of medical prejudice, police harassment, and church condemnation (Jagose 24). The minuscule mention or assumption of one’s homosexuality could easily lead to the loss of family, livelihood, and sometimes even their lives. It was only after the Stonewall riots and the organization of gay/lesbian groups that times for homosexuals started to look brighter.
Within America’s society today, 3.8 percent of the population is gay, lesbian, or bisexual. With only 17 of the 50 states legalizing and recognizing this type of relationship (“History…”), it puts a stronghold on same-sex couples to publicly declare their love with the promise of marriage. Same-sex marriages should be legalized because everyone has equal rights of freedom and liberty.

If the constitution promises equality before the law, what justification can there be for clearing rights to any member of society? More specifically what justification can there be for clearing rights to gays and lesbians? Lots of questions come to mind when the topic of gays and lesbians having equal rights as any other citizen in society would have. Should gays and lesbians have equal employment opportunities? Should they have the right to adopt a child, and should they have the right to marry their own sex partner. Well of course they should have the right to do all of these things just because they are human beings also.
I want you to become aware of what we have done and take action to stop people to be happy, to respect their way of thinking, acting, and living. My purpose in writing this paper is to present my points of view on how society has changed as the years go by. Also how homosexuals have fought for many years and all the different struggles they have managed to get the rights they deserve and one day had which were then taken away because they became themselves and also because of the ignorance of some people.
