All around the world there are thousands even millions of children who are waiting to be adopted. Many who are troubled children, and for that reason they are from foster home to foster home. The ideal American "family" is with a man and a woman. In the United States we have same-sex couples who are wanting to adopt, but they are being turned down due to their sexual preference. Same-sex relationships are much more stable than the average heterosexual relationship. Having a stable relationship ensures an emotionally steady home for a foster child. “Good parenting is not influenced by sexual orientation. Rather, it is influenced most profoundly by a parent’s ability to create a loving and nurturing home” (“LGBT Adoption”). Same-sex couples are more likely to adopt “hard to place” children with challenging behavior or disabilities.

Same-sex relationships and same-sex adoption is extremely relevant today. Either on the news or newspaper articles we see same-sex couples file lawsuit against courts and adoption agencies for discriminating sexual preference. The “regular” same-sex couples along with the “Hollywood” same-sex couples are trying to earn acceptance for being LGBT. Lifelong adoption, an "A+" rating with the Better Business Bureau provides an aggressive nationwide advertising, marketing, and national outreach campaign, “estimated two million LGBT people are interested in adopting” (“LGBT Adoption”). In the state of California there is roughly “16,000 adopted children” living with same-sex parents/couples. (“LGBT Adoption”).

The foster children that live in the state of “North Dakota, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, Ohio, and New Hampshire, Michigan, Florida” are the most affected (“Finding Gay Adoption…”). First reaso...

Many same-sex couples live in fear if they do not have adoption papers, because their parental rights might be questioned if they were to travel where same-sex adoption is not allowed. Or if the child was to be an accident the non-legal parent would not have a say in the child's medical health.

Judge Lopez Torres realizes that she left Melissa and Amaila facing a legal risk. In an interview judge Lopez Torres stated “...her strong belief that all married couples, gay or straight, should be treated equally”(McKinley). Judge Lopez Torres needs to understand that not everyone has the same strong beliefs as her.

The marriage and birth certificate are not a powerful Carlo L. Bella, a lawyer who specializes in same-sex marriage issue, stated “an adoption approved by a judge carries more weight in other jurisdictions”(qtd in McKinley).
