In the movie “GATTACA” by Andrew Niccol shows the futuristic setting and the main character Vincent has serious problems and has to share blood to be a different person “Jerome” to become what he really wants which is going to the stars. Traits that describes Vincent is brave and willing.
The main character Vincent was born and had a genetic test that showed that Vincent had high probabilities of hyperactivity, sight troubles and serious heart disease, and a life expectancy of thirty years. He grew up and got a young brother named Anton. They grew up and Anton was stronger and better at everything. They played a game called “Softy”. It's
where you swim in the sea as far as possible and being last to turn back to shore would be the “Softy”, Anton was always the Softy. Besides his weak health he had a very strong will. His dream was to join Gattaca. Gattaca is a futuristic company where you explore one of the moons of saturn. Vincent told himself with his health problems that the only opportunity he will be able to see inside of a spaceship was to do the cleaning in it. A bit later him and his brother Anton played the game “Softy” again, but that time Vincent won. Anton was drowning and Vincent saved him. For Vincent it was the moment that made him realize everything was possible. He had to try to exceed his dream. Using an illegal DNA broker, he makes a deal with this man named Jerome. Jerome will give him Urine samples and Identity, Vincent also had to extend his leg to be the same height as Jerome. If they find a little piece of hair of Jerome(Vincent) he will be caught and go to jail. They have scientist that sample anything. Later Jerome was nicknamed Hugo and Vincent was no longer himself he was Jerome. Jerome got what he dreamed and Hugo committed suicide in the fire chamber from the spaceship taking off with Jerome in it going up to Saturn. In the movie “Gattaca” the main character Vincent is a willing person. I think person's DNA should describe you as a person not someone else. I think that the events in this movie should become reality because it would be safer for any company including a company like Gattaca. Sincerely, Gavyn Olson
In the Lilies of the Field by William E. Barrett, Homer and Mother Maria both display straightforward, hardworking, and stubborn character traits. Firstly, Homer and Mother Maria both display a straightforward personality by being brutally honest about their opinions. For example, when Mother Maria asks Homer to build a chapel, Homer speaks his mind by telling her he does not want to build it. Mother Maria shows her straightforward behavior during Homer’s stay at the convent. One morning, when Homer sleeps in late, Mother to becomes extremely upset and is not afraid to show how she feels about him. Secondly, both Homer and Mother Maria display a hardworking spirit. Homer is a hardworking man because after finally agreeing to build the chapel,
“The thing I hate about space is that you can feel how big and empty it is… ”
Micah and Henri from Deborah Ellis’ book, A company of Fools, are a classic example of how a character’s personality can be influenced by their upbringing and background. Micah was raised in the streets and therefore has developed a wild, self-sufficient manner unlike Henri who has only ever known the sheltered but strict life of the Abbey and is very introverted and well mannered. However as the story progresses similar traits between the two boys are uncovered and they both start to lose features of their personality that at first made them seem so different from one another. This shows that the two boys who at first appear to be polar opposites are actually remarkably similar, and only differenced in background which provides opportunity
Have you ever read a book where one of the main characters was so envious of another? Well, here you have it. In John Knowles “A Separate Peace”, Gene is all for the jealous rage and resentful ways. Throughout the book, Mr. Knowles places the boys in a boarding school and sets the tale so that the reader knows all the focus is set upon Finny and Gene’s relationship. Speaking of relationships and Gene’s way, the storyline takes a turn and Finny actually ends up being almost physically pushed out of a tree. I say that shows a large characteristic of Gene. He is without a doubt, resentful towards Finny.
In Frank Beddors, “The Looking Glass Wars” a lot of things happen that are bad. There are lots of good things too. The story is about the “Myth” of Alice Liddell stepping through a looking glass into Wonderland. The topic of this essay is the Truth of the story. The purpose of this paper is how Loyal or devoted some people are to white imagination
AP English Literature and Composition MAJOR WORKS DATA SHEET Title: A Raisin In the Sun Author: Lorraine Hansberry Date of Publication: 1951 Genre: Realistic Drama Biographical Information about the Author Lorraine Hansberry was born in Chicago on May 19, 1930. She grew up as the youngest in her family. Her mother was a teacher and her father was a real estate broker.
The novel Suttree is centered on Cornelius “Buddy” Suttree, a college educated man who has decided to forsake his former life and live in a houseboat on the Tennessee River outside of Knoxville, Tennessee in a fairly destitute area known as McAnally Flats in 1951. He leaves his wife and child, a son, giving up the comfortable life to live as a river rat of sorts. He seems to be searching for something, unbeknownst to him or the reader. Possibly the meaning of life, but more than likely it’s a way to deal with death that seems to follow Suttree around throughout the novel. He’s not one for social norms, coming off as being an anarchist. He runs from his responsibilities, rebels against authority, and refuses to be bound by social convention. His everyday life is a hodge podge of drunken adventures, be it brawls or waking up in the morning in the local lockup hungover and confused. He associates with the
At the beginning of this novel Gene is very “Ignorant” of his heart. He constantly lies, not only to others but also to him self. Finny on the other hand is a very honest person, he never lies about anything to make him sound or feel better about himself. An example of this is the incident where the boys are asked their height and Genes says he is 5’9 and Finny corrects him by saying, “no your five foot eight and a half, the same as me.” This quote shows the honesty that Finny possesses and that Gene lacks. Gene refuses to admit that he isn’t tall while Finny openly admits it. Gene refuses to admit that he isn’t brave or that his motives for injuring Finny where entirely false. Gene cannot face what he is and this leads to tragedy.
Another scene that shows Vincent struggling with society's barriers is when Anton his valid brother and Vincent raced against each other in swimming. Anton ended up winning, whereas Vincent struggled through seaweed which blocked a clear path for him to swim. The seaweed symbolised yet another barrier society set against Vincent whereas Anton was able to swim with a clear pathway. This shows the segregation within society between invalids and valids and how clear it is that society values valids over invalids. At a young age, Vincent is influenced by society’s values to believe that invalids are not worthy of achieving success in comparison to valids who are destined to succeed due to them being genetically engineered which strips individuals of their flaws. This sets up the discrimination that society forces against any invalid because they reject anyone who carries
The play “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry has many interesting characters. In my opinion, the most fascinating character is Ruth because of her many emotions and captivating personality. She goes through extreme emotions in the play such as happiness, sadness, anger, stress, and confusion. Ruth is very independent, firm, kind, witty, and loving.
Vincent seems condemned to an empty and unfulfilling life when introduced into the society of the “not too distant future”. He is disadvantaged because of his parents' adherence of non-well born genes which leave his short lifespan and different diseases and problems. Consequently, in this society where genetic engineering is a common thing rather than an exception, it appears that Vincent will always live in the shadows of genetically superior beings. Although Vincent is at the lower end of the genetic hierarchy, it is due to his ferocious determination and unquenchable desire that he attained himself from the other colleagues of Gattaca and achieve his dreams. It is these qualities that consider Niccola's central protagonist unique in the world of Gattaca.
Much work goes into musical , as was the case in “Catch Me If You Can”,which La Joya Middle School drama had the pleasure of watching on January 15, put on by El Diamante High School. The musical was directed by John Sorber and Michael Tackett. This amazing production included many talented actors such as Maverik Dakota Raven starring as Frank Abagnale Jr., Kiley Hoffman playing Brenda Strong, and Jonathan Johns as Carl Hanratty. This incredible play carried a strong lesson. As was seen the protagonist ran from his problems and pretended to be someone who he wasn't. The plot of this story showed us that we can't run from our problems, for that only worsens the situation and is a snowball for our problems.
In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Reverend John Hale’s role in the witch trials changed from a confident and passionate proponent to a guilty and despairing dissenter. He entered the play with an eager air about him, and he was keen to use his expertise and knowledge in witchcraft and the Devil in order to dispel the evil witches who “trafficked with the Devil” (Miller 61) in the town of Salem. Furthermore, he was proud of the fact that he was called upon specifically to help out with Salem’s witch problem. However, toward the end of the play, he was “steeped in sorrow” (Miller 119) and “exhausted.” He realized too late that the accusations of the afflicted girls were just fabricated lies. Moreover, his mistake caused a countless number of innocent people to be thrown in jail and hanged. With this revelation clouding his mind and breaking his heart, he became an anguished man who regretted his actions that aided the conviction of numerous so-called witches. He fought against the witch trials after that, but his actions were inadequate. The witch trials still went on. Hale ended up being a character who opposed the witch trials, but instead of going against the court as aggressively as John Proctor, he begged the accused to confess in order to save their own lives. He believed that it was better to lie and live than deny and die.
Defining the American character is quite difficult because American identity is vaguely founded on shared values and ideologies, more so than a particular creed, race, or culture. In order to describe the American character, we will consider the dominate and distinctive qualities of Americans as interpreted by J. Hector St. Jon De Crèvecoeur and Thomas Paine. First, we will examine how Crèvecoeur illustrates Americans as industrious, prideful, and political in “Letters from an American Farmer.” Then, we will analyze from Thomas Paine's “Common Sense” how he depicts the prevalent qualities of Americans to be driven by justice, liberty, emotions, and individualism. Also, because both authors consider the American character and culture different
Noah is the one of the main characters of The Notebook. He is the hero of this novel. Noah represents true love and true loyalty. In a way, The Notebook is similar to every modern day romance movie, and Noah represents the “dream man” that all the girls always imagine of having. The characters in movies are used to symbolize ideas, and in this novel, Noah represents true, faithful, committed love. Noah remains loyal to Allie even in the situation where he is unsure whether they will ever meet again or not.
