Domestic violence … is it always towards women or is it towards men as well? Many people think that women are always the victims, but is that always the case? In the book The Great Gatsby, Tom Buchanan put every kind of abuse on Daisy. You can tell Tom was an abusive person because of the way he acted towards other women, such as Myrtle. Tom also isolates Daisy which is a form of domestic violence because he treated her like a caged animal. But men can also be victims. In the Great Gatsby, Daisy’s and Gatsby’s relationship could have been abusive but in different ways that Tom and Daisy’s was. Gatsby was not physically hitting Daisy or verbally putting her down but he was very controlling with her and tried to take control of Daisy’s feelings. Tom on the other hand, cheats on Daisy and hurts myrtle, his lover. He hits her so bad, he breaks her nose. Daisy may not even realize that she is in an abusive relationship but she does know that the relationship does not make her happy, which is why many women still stay with their spouses. Someone might say that Tom and Daisy’s relationship wasn’t abusive, you never saw a scene when Tom hit Daisy.
