The Introduction to Poetry class had taught me an incredible amount about the variety of poets and their own unique style of writing poems, and how these poems has more than just one viewpoint. The materials taught throughout this course has given me a new perspective that I will carry with me for a long time. I learned about how poetry isn’t just a piece of work that poets creates for fun, but rather a descriptive piece of writing that are written in the poet's' own style and own outlook in life. Poetry is more than just playful, it is inspirational and connects to many different culture. The activities done in this course: the song lyrics analysis, the poetry analysis, the presentation, and the two essays, showed great results in my understanding …show more content…
I did my assignment on one of Gary Soto’s poem called “Oranges”. I was required to take it and analyze the poem through a different lens, not that of a college student. In this case, my lens was supposed to be about how poverty affect love, but because I didn’t understand what my content was supposed to be, I wasn’t able to explore the different outlook of the problem and determine the problems and concern. However, this project did follow the course outline and made me look at the poem in a different point-of-view. When I first read the poem, I interpret this line, “I peeled my orange / that was so bright against / the gray of December”, as a young boy just eating a bright orange while standing with his girlfriend in December (Soto. lll. 51-53). However, when I looked at this through the lens of poverty, orange is actually seen as sacred and important to someone who couldn’t afford a ten cent chocolate. The oranges in the poem is something people who are poor can afford and because it was in December, these oranges are very special because those are the sweetest and recently
I chose to do my poem analysis on Oranges by Gary Soto. When I first read the title, I predicted that it was going to simply be about oranges and what characteristics it has. Instead, it was about a young boy who talks about the first time he went on a walk with a girl he liked. They walk to a local drugstore and he buys her a chocolate with everything he has: a nickel and an orange. It ends with them walking hand-in-hand and proceeding to the point where they stop and separately eat the orange and chocolate. In the end, it shows the significance of the title which is that he sacrificed one of his beloved oranges for the girl he admired. Gary Soto is known for being an American poet, novelist, and memoirist. Memoirist definitely shows throughout
Poetry is something that is to be read delicately and cautiously if one wanted to find meaning through the words. Readers have to be gentle and patiently ponder about what they are reading in order to find any significance in the poem. If someone is not patient with reading, they will not feel impacted by poetry and will not want to read it. In Billy Collins’, “Introduction to Poetry,” he uses figurative language to help readers see that the way to enjoy and understand poetry is by reading between the lines and being patient with how each individual relates to the readings.
This is the moment Gary Soto captures in his poem "Oranges". The feeling and power of adolescent love is created using tone, contrasting imagery, and symbolism. First, the use of tone in "Oranges" clearly helps to set the theme of the poem. Children often talk with simple sentences that directly state what happened. The speaker's choice of words and raw simplicity in the way he tells his story illustrates his youth and the honesty that comes with it.

The poem, Two Guitars, by Victor Hernandez Cruz means that there comes a point where everybody’s glory days end.
In short, oranges represent what their young love feeds off of which are warmth, love and understanding. Soto used imagery and symbolism to make the poem powerful, but what really made it powerful is his use of elements, characters, and the plot. There is a lot of reference to brightness, breathing, and light. Brightness and the light give the poem and the oranges more power, while the heavy breathing makes it seem more realistic because the twelve year old boy is nervous since he is out with his first girlfriend. The poem is very vivid as well as colorful. You can tell what the narrator feels, and even I could identify with him at some points.
Poems are forms of communication that give an applicable view of the past, present and future events. Reading the poem titled “America”, written by Richard Blanco brought me memories from my childhood in my parent’s house and also what is happening now in my house as a parent. The poem explains how one person doesn’t have all the knowledge about something. It also, describes the daily life struggles I experienced during my childhood, when my parent 's and I moved from our hometown to live in another town becuase of their work and it brings to light the conflict of cultures I and my children are going through since we moved to United State of America .
In today’s modern view, poetry has become more than just paragraphs that rhyme at the end of each sentence. If the reader has an open mind and the ability to read in between the lines, they discover more than they have bargained for. Some poems might have stories of suffering or abuse, while others contain happy times and great joy. Regardless of what the poems contains, all poems display an expression. That very moment when the writer begins his mental journey with that pen and paper is where all feelings are let out. As poetry is continues to be written, the reader begins to see patterns within each poem. On the other hand, poems have nothing at all in common with one another. A good example of this is in two poems by a famous writer by the name of Langston Hughes. A well-known writer that still gets credit today for pomes like “ Theme for English B” and “Let American be American Again.”

When someone imagines a poem, the stereotypical love poem or one about the beauty of nature may come to mind first. Possibly, the reflection on one’s life or a personification of death. A poem critiquing the status quo of society likely is not very high upon that list. However, despite this, poems like “The Trapper’s Boast”, “Fearful Women”, or “Masks” demonstrate how poetry is capable of discussing complex, invocative topics in a way meant to incite revolutionary change. Furthermore, poems are capable of doing so in a way that is not easily matched by many other forms of art because poetry is granted inexhaustible length and depth, truthful passion, and valuable clarity in a way that is more easily consumable by the masses.
Poems have always given us an artistic insight into real life matters. It is sometimes amazing how poets have the ability to implant deep thoughts into the simpler words of a poem. In this paper, I will be analyzing four specific poems and try to assess my inner thoughts and understandings relating to the matter. The four poems are similar in terms of subject and all of them are trying to project the struggles, thoughts, and understandings of a parent.
Detailed and elaborate images are created in the reader’s mind while interpreting poetry and without poetry, this could not be done. Poetry often rhymes and creatively puts things into different perspectives, giving the reader the ability to ponder and perceive their own thoughts of what the poem is portray. Poetry is something that people either love or hate; nonetheless, it cannot be argued that poetry is a very impressive way of writing due to the amount of thought that goes into it, not only from the poet, but the reader and listener
Poetry is a true literary art form that uncovers the hidden beauty of the world through its word’s. Poems are strong pieces of literature that unveil a deeper meaning using various literary devices throughout. Therefore, all humans need poetry as it is a living image that endlessly inspires the importance of change in society. Moreover, in silence, poetry is able to connect with people on any subject for it contains all the wisdom of the world. Furthermore, poetry pours out raw emotion and truth though the use of metaphors, allusions and many more devices, which shed light on the value of life. In “Constantly Risking Absurdity” a poem written by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, the speaker explains the devotion that a poet
For my personal project I chose to make a booklet, with all my poems in it. Since I love writing poetry I thought it would be interesting to make a book of it. The book is entitled “Expressing Yourself through Poetry”. Poems can be funny, scary, silly or sad so I decided to write inspirational poems and something that anyone of any age can relate to I’ve decided to write a mixture of sad, happy and inspiring poems. Poems are a great way to escape from reality and enter the world of imagination. It helps you express yourself in a way that you have never experienced before. It helps you understand and learn more about yourself. Poems are like a diary it’s where you pour out all your feelings in and no one judges you. It helps you understand the world better. Poems are a way to express and portray yourself.
