The Introduction to Poetry class had taught me an incredible amount about the variety of poets and their own unique style of writing poems, and how these poems has more than just one viewpoint. The materials taught throughout this course has given me a new perspective that I will carry with me for a long time. I learned about how poetry isn’t just a piece of work that poets creates for fun, but rather a descriptive piece of writing that are written in the poet's' own style and own outlook in life. Poetry is more than just playful, it is inspirational and connects to many different culture. I did my assignment on one of Gary Soto’s poem called “Oranges”. I was required to take it and analyze the poem through a different lens, not that of a college student. In this case, my lens was supposed to be about how poverty affect love, but because I didn’t understand what my content was supposed to be, I wasn’t able to explore the different outlook of the problem and determine the problems and concern. However, this project did follow the course outline and made me look at the poem in a different point-of-view. When I first read the poem, I interpret this line, “I peeled my orange / that was so bright against / the gray of December”, as a young boy just eating a bright orange while standing with his girlfriend in December (Soto. lll. 51-53). However, when I looked at this through the lens of poverty, orange is actually seen as sacred and important to someone who couldn’t afford a ten cent chocolate.
