Working with children isn’t easy however learning the right techniques and implementing certain behaviors can help make the transition easier. For instance, in class we discussed an article that described about teachers that would be considered either gangstas, wanksta or ridas in urban areas. The first set of teachers that could be considered wanksta are teachers that always talk about doing something but never actually goes forth with the idea. This can negatively impact students because if you’re not willing to go the extra mile to help your students it can hurt their education. Gangstas on the other hand, are teachers who barely even like their job as teacher and their community. However, one of the best teachers out there would be the ridas. However, after using activities to help get better understanding of the student as well as setting rules can make it easier. First, I would tell the students all the rules by using the C.H.A.M.P.S method during the first meeting so the student can understand the expectations during all the meetings. Since, I’ve worked as an America Tutor in the past if a student did not respect the rule or had hard time with it we would do activities and one-one time to understand the difficulty behind it. For instance, if a student were to say no to participating in an activity I would try different methods such as asking if they would like to be in a smaller group and talk to them to learn what is bothering them from participating. At the end of the day the most important thing is communication. The way that you communicate with the students will play huge impact in the the student will learn but also the way that you carry yourself. In many low income communities, there are teachers that are careless and provide their students with poor quality education. These teachers are there just to make sure that they keep receiving their monthly paychecks and act in this way because they believe that low income students do not have the drive, the passion, or the potential to be able to make something of themselves and one day be in a better place than they are now. Anyon reveals that in working class schools student’s “Work is often evaluated not according to whether it is right or wrong but according to whether the children followed the right steps.” (3). This is important because it demonstrates that low income students are being taught in a very basic way. These children are being negatively affected by this because if they are always being taught in this way then they will never be challenged academically, which can play a huge role in their futures. Gangs can be classified as a group of adolescents who are perceived to be a threat to society, are mostly recognized by their name and territorial power, and have been involved in numerous acts that violate criminal law procedures in North America. (Esbensen, Winfree, He and Taylor, 2001). The first theme that was present in the pieces of literature collected was the lack of opportunities. As previously stated before, becoming involved in a gang starts at a young age. An article titled “Youth Gangs and Definitional Issues: ‘When is a Gang a Gang, and Why Does It Matter?’” explicates what exactly constitutes a gang, starting with young adolescents. Using a survey conducted in the United States, Finn-Aage Esbensen, L. Thomas Winfree, Jr., Ni He, and Terrance J. Taylor (2001) surveyed over 5,000 students. The questions asked were based on how and why they chose to be in a gang (whether they were a part of it currently or before the survey was conducted). The authors concluded their research in deciding unanimously that there was a connection between a social learning theory, and the commencement of gangs. Correspondingly, Herbert C. Covey (2003) created an academic book entitled, Street Gangs Throughout the World, which gave an in-depth look at the different types of gangs across the world. Throughout several chapters, Covey looks at the root causes of how any why gangs are formed. The author noticed that there was a significant trend among young, deprived adolescents and gang membership. (Covey, 2003). Covey (2003) indicated that the more underprivileged a youth was, the more likely the chances would be of them joining a gang, which is a major concern.
Gangs of New York is a war-packed film directed by Martin Scorsese that takes place in New York during the Civil War. This 2002 film is about a young Irish immigrant, named Amsterdam, who returns to the Five Points to get revenge on William Cutting, a powerful gang leader who murdered his father. One scene that really sticks out within the film occurs during the draft riots that took place in New York. Although this particular scene is historically accurate, there are some parts of the scene itself that seem to have a bigger impact overall. The parts that create this impact show how important this dark period was and how violently this event played out in the real world.

The origin of "Gangs" can lead all the way backk to the post revolutionary times. In the early days, gangs were meant to only protect or act as clubs to some. The revolutions of gangs have since taken a turn for the worse. There are an estimated 785,000 known and active gangs in America only. Gangs have popped up in almost every country, every continent, each with their own distinct style. Caucasians, African Americans, Hispanics, and Asians are all linked to the history of gangs.
In the past they have been responsible for crime after crime, but in today’s day and time some gangs are trying to be better and make a difference. The fact is, not all gangs are bad, like the media would like you to think they are. I think the media should start covering both the good and bad aspects of gangs and what they truly do for the community. If children and our youth see the positive aspects that gangs have to offer, they may be less likely to only follow the negative path gangs can take them down. I hope that the media will one day realize what a positive impact they can have on society, and they will one day quit being so biased in their reporting.
The society is a complex web of interactions between the different factions. At the very basic level is the family unit and in this case the nuclear family unit. The social connection between family members is the basic connection that the rest of the society uses to stay together. This is a cohesion that can be considered to have adhesive elements of the various people in the society. Ideally, there is an insatiable need in human being to be part of something bigger than themselves. As such the connection at the family level and to loved ones provides the attachment that people require to feel safe and secure. It is thus common for people to tend to look for that element of connection if the family unit does not provide for the same (Publicsafety.gc.ca, 2016). Adolescents are largely at a stage where they are trying to establish their values relative to what their environment dictates. Do you believe that one’s words can reflect on a certain person’s action? Today, Rap has become the most popular type of music in the US. The Rap industry is dominated by artists’ who mostly dedicate their lyrics to either violence, drugs, or sex. Through 1998 and 1999 the survey taken by the National Music Bureau, stated that 46% of the listeners of Rap are under the age of 19. While 65% of the listeners, live in run-down homes, or impoverished areas, usually being inner cities. The National Music Bureau also reported that in the 66% of the listeners of Rap who are under the age of 19, 86% of those teen-agers are black. Along with that fact, many of the artists sing about their ghettos, and their past ways of life, which included, drugs, sex, murder, and alcohol. The listeners of rap living in run down areas in the inner cities see themselves in the same situation as many of the rap artists’, and duplicate what they hear. So although a person may be responsible for his or her action, rap music dramatically affects the lives of America’s inner cities and slums.
A gang is a group of people who interact among themselves. Teen violence is contributed to these gangs. Most gangs claim neighborhoods as their territory and try to control everything inside that territory. This kind of antisocial behavior is a major problem in American Society.
To begin, we need to understand the nature of students. The nature of students varies between individuals. The majority of students are well-behaved and come to school ready to learn. Part of this is due to the way they have been raised, but most students are basically good. There is a small percent of students whose nature, it seems, is to make everyone miserable. I do not know if this is because of a difficult childhood at home or because the student just likes to be the center of attention. Either way, there are always students that will give their teachers a hard time. I guess this is their nature. Every individual is different, therefore, the nature of the students I will teach some day will be different depending on their background and other various things that may happen to them as they grow up. For example, a student that has lost a sibling due to an illness or accident, may become very bitter throughout life. The nature of this student’s behavior which is being shaped by this may make this student a cold-hearted and mean student. These are the students that teachers need to spend extra time with and try to make them feel loved, no matter how hard this may be. I, as a future teacher, need to look at students and try to help them out no matter how difficult that may be.
“Why would you want to be a teacher? There’s no respect anymore and you do not get paid enough for what you do?” These are the unfailing responses that I receive when I tell someone I am attending college to become a teacher. It always seems to be the same response wherever I go. These responses are not only negative but also empty and yet seem to be the attitudes of many people. I believe that teaching is one of the noblest careers that one can pursue. Many people say that teaching is not the same that it used to be and that people do not look to them as they once had. I concede that the world is changing and that teacher’s positions have changed but I refute that because the world is changing it does not necessarily mean that teachers’ characters have changed, in fact as a result of the changing world, a teacher must be that much more extraordinary. Twenty years ago schools did not worry about guns, bombs, or extreme threats. The biggest problems in the fifties were chewing gum and talking. Today children carry much more weight on their shoulders than any decade before. I have learned through readings, my own observations and from teachers, children of today’s society live uncertain lives. Today many children go home to unhealthy environments such as drug use, physical abuse, alcoholic family members, emotional abuse, poverty, instabilities and neglect. How can these children be expected to learn academics when faced with these problems? I concede that not all children suffer from neglect or poverty but with one in every two marriages in America ending in divorce, many children are indeed faced with troubles.
