Gangs and Violence in Schools
Gang activity in schools has increased tremendously since the 1960s. Some school systems have used different methods to prevent the spread of gang activity within school grounds. Gang activity usually involves an act of crime or violence. These gang activities in schools endanger students and also staff. How can theses acts be prevented? Gangs inside the school system cause problems for other students due to the violence, bullying, and conformity.
Schools have tried to prevent violence, but violence usually starts from a type of hatred between individuals or gang activity. Gang violence typically involves a large number of individuals and they are represented by colors, hand gestures, or tattoos. These acts of violence can lead to many dangerous situations, such as fights, group jumping's, stabbings, and even shoot outs. Gangs particularly begin with fights between two or more individuals

Bullies tend to prey on individuals that may look or seem weak or considered to be in a lower social class. Popular kids tend to boss or make fun of others as a form of entertainment, but its an embarrassment to the group male/female that is receiving the degrading treatment. These tricks, verbal, cyber, and mental abuse by a bully makes him/her feel powerful and better about his or herself. These actions a normally done in a school atmosphere because the attention is on them and they feel like their on top f the world. The issues with bullies may stem from their own personal home environment or within their own neighborhood. What happens when the bullied are tired of being bullied? The weak retaliate in their own way whether it is through gang activity, bringing weapons to school for defense or massive killing spree, or suicide. Retaliation from the bully or the on the bulled can effect other people around them because innocent people are or can get caught in between the
There are bullies everywhere you go some noticeable and others not at all, you may not recognize a bully because they come in many different forms. The abusiveness of bullies’ is usually deliberate and not accidental. There are bullies at work, online, in the public and mostly school. So who is a bully? A bully is a person that causes emotional, psychological, or physical harm by using two different types of attacks. The first type being direct attacks, this consists of threatening, teasing, taunting, name calling, stealing, damaging of belongings, and hitting. Studies say that this type of attack is more common between males. “While both boys and girls say others bully them by making fun of the way they look or talk, boys are more likely to report being hit, slapped, or pushed”( Nansel, Overpeck, Pilla, Ruan, Simons-Morton, Scheidt 2001). The other type of attacks are indirect, they are spreading of rumors and encouraging others to reject someone else. Studies say that this type of attack is more common between females. “Teenage girls are more often the targets of rumors and sexual comments” ( Nansel, Overpeck, Pilla, Ruan, Simons-Morton, Scheidt 2001). Bullies usually target people who are different, it may be physical differences or even intelligence, and also they tend to target people who won’t retaliate back. They usually harass the person by attacking at there differences and imperfections. So a bully is someone who causes harm to others over and over again.
Gangs can be classified as a group of adolescents who are perceived to be a threat to society, are mostly recognized by their name and territorial power, and have been involved in numerous acts that violate criminal law procedures in North America. (Esbensen, Winfree, He and Taylor, 2001). The first theme that was present in the pieces of literature collected was the lack of opportunities. As previously stated before, becoming involved in a gang starts at a young age. An article titled “Youth Gangs and Definitional Issues: ‘When is a Gang a Gang, and Why Does It Matter?’” explicates what exactly constitutes a gang, starting with young adolescents. Using a survey conducted in the United States, Finn-Aage Esbensen, L. Thomas Winfree, Jr., Ni He, and Terrance J. Taylor (2001) surveyed over 5,000 students. The questions asked were based on how and why they chose to be in a gang (whether they were a part of it currently or before the survey was conducted). The authors concluded their research in deciding unanimously that there was a connection between a social learning theory, and the commencement of gangs. Correspondingly, Herbert C. Covey (2003) created an academic book entitled, Street Gangs Throughout the World, which gave an in-depth look at the different types of gangs across the world. Throughout several chapters, Covey looks at the root causes of how any why gangs are formed. The author noticed that there was a significant trend among young, deprived adolescents and gang membership. (Covey, 2003). Covey (2003) indicated that the more underprivileged a youth was, the more likely the chances would be of them joining a gang, which is a major concern.
States such as California and New York have a big problem with gangs. Gang-related homicides in Los Angeles County has increased dramatically in the last 16 years, reaching epidemic proportions especially for young male African Americans and Hispanics, according to a study by co-authored by Deirdre Anglin, assistant professor of emergency medicine at LAC+USC (Maceo para.1). When someone decides to join a gang they have to let current members of the gang know that they are going to be a member for life and they are dedicated to the gang, this can be proven in a gang affiliation. Boys are usually forced to fight several gang members at the same time. This is called being "rolled-in" or "walking the line." Girls may be forced to have sex with several gang members or fight other female members. For some gangs you have to beat someone up, rob a store or commit a drive-by shooting. This puts innocent citizens in danger. In Chicago, the year 2012, more than 40 people were shot over Memorial Day weekend alone (Childress para.2).
There are few known active members of street gangs attending district schools. The gang activity that is seen is that of ‘want-to-be’ gang members who are influenced by family members who are involved in street gang activity. Other ‘want-to-be’ members are often swayed by popular culture. Primarily, school administrators and district officials encounter smaller groups of students, anywhere from 3 to 10 students,from elementary to senior high, who band together and give the group a name. The group serves as a support system for members. These groups tend to be fluid and can disband as quickly as they formed. Most of these groups are benign and caused few difficulties. On occasion there have been groups that have caused greater disruption including violence, intimidation, and drug use. This has led to suspension and student transfer. Gangs are centered on a certain territory or turf that is claimed by that gang. When rival gangs enter that said territory anything could happen. More often then not there is some type of a violent action that will be taken because the gang feels as if they are being disrespected because that gang member or members are trespassing. Many times civilians are severely injured and even killed due to gang shootouts, drive-bys, and sometimes just at the wrong place at the wrong time. There are an estimated 30,000 gangs with an estimated 1,000,000 members and growing. In big cities where gangs are really prevalent it is stated in __ that there are anywhere from 1,000 to 1,500 deaths per year and from 10,000 to 12,000 per year in the entire United States.

While guns have a say in the fears of students, gang activity in America's neighborhoods cannot be ignored. Impact of peer pressure, gang membership and power associated with gun violence has a devastating and long lasting impact on community. While the motivation for mass school shootings is hard to pin down, gender is the most obvious variable when it comes to gun violence. Socialization is a lifelong process which includes learning new norms and values. For some of these youths gang becomes an alternative way to transition from adolescence to adulthood. Lack of availability of socially tolerable rites of passage from childhood to adulthood is not a good justification for the development of gangs.

Bullying is a major problem and needs to be prevented. A bully is defined as aggressive behavior or to harm a person repeatedly overtime. School bullying can start anytime from elementary to high school. Over 5.7 teens in the United States are involved in school bullying(about.com). Boys tend to be more physically bullied as girls are more prone to being bullied verbally. According to the National Conference of State Legislature, boys who are often bullied can be five times as likely to be more or severely depressed and four times more likely to be suicidal. Girls are three times more likely to be severely depressed and eight times more likely to be suicidal. Some children are afraid to go to school, which can lead to poor grades or lack of concentration. It is hard for students to focus at school when they are worried about their bully. Bullying can make school a place of fear and can lead to school violence.
Bullying of students in school is an abuse that affects and produces a number of negative experiences on the victim. It is proven that those students who bully do so merely because they see themselves superior than those being bullied. They use this as a tactic to make juniors fear them and show them that they are not equal in any way. Some will even bully as a revenge of the bullying they suffered in the past. I have been bullied before and I know some of the effects it could have on a person. Bullying is a serious cause of many issues and has effects that may be long lasting.

The lack of parental attention causes a feeling of insecurity leading someone to acquit bullying. Students that are neglected, have divorced parents, or are around the influence of drugs/alcohol are more controlling and impulsive by nature.
