Mahatma Gandhi was many things. He was a son, a husband, a lawyer, but he was admired worldwide as a great social reformer, political leader, and thinker. Through a unique method of nonviolence, he won civic rights and eventually independence for India’s people.
Mahatma was born Mohandas K. Gandhi in 1869 in Porbandar, India. He lived there until 1888, when he left to study law at University College in London. In 1891, after having been admitted to the British bar, Gandhi returned to India and attempted to practice law in Bombay with little success. Two years later an Indian firm with interests in South Africa hired him as a legal advisor in its office in Durban. This changed his life.
In South Africa, Gandhi was treated as a member of an inferior race. He was disgusted at the lack of civic liberties and political rights available to Indian immigrants to South Africa. He then committed himself to the struggle for elementary rights for Indians.
Gandhi remained in South Africa for twenty years, suffering imprisonment at times. In 1896, after being attacked and beaten by a mob of white South Africans, Gandhi began to teach a policy of passive resistance to, and noncooperation with, the South African authorities. For this, Gandhi coined the term Satyagraha, a Sanskrit word meaning truth and firmness. In 1914, the government of the Union of South Africa made important concessions to Gandhi’s demands including recognition of Indian marriages and abolition of...

Candide is the illegitimate nephew of a German baron. He grows up in the baron’s castle under the tutelage of the scholar Pangloss, who teaches him that this world is “the best of all possible worlds.” Candide falls in love with the baron’s young daughter, Cunégonde. The baron catches the two kissing and expels Candide from his home. On his own for the first time, Candide is soon conscripted into the army of the Bulgars. He wanders away from camp for a brief walk, and is brutally flogged as a deserter. After witnessing a horrific battle, he manages to escape and travels to Holland.
Voltaire’s Candide is the apotheosis of an individual’s inability or refusal to question one’s philosophy or belief. Candide, the main protagonist of the novel, follows Pangloss’ philosophy that the world is “the best of all possible worlds”, despite the rigors he faces along his journey. Candide's inability to question his Mentor's so to speak wisdom, covers Candide with an optimistic perception of the world, but is simply blind to the peril he experiences. To elaborate, Candide’s acceptance of Pangloss’ theory hinders his ability to fully experience the luxuries in El Dorado, hinders his ability to accept other notions of how the world is, and deters
Do the poem Beowulf and the novel Grendel leave Grendel's archetype undefined? In Beowulf by Seamus Heaney, Grendel's archetype was the monster. In the poem, the storyline shows that Grendel terrorizing the Danes every night and attracts the hero's attention who that will slay him; this is a typical, epic monster archetype. On the other hand, in the novel Grendel by John Gardner it displays his first encounter with the Danes, his home life, and his thought process which indicates his archetype is more of a Social Outcast.
In Voltaire’s Candide, Candide’s ignorance of the world leads him to discover what the world outside of Westphalia is like through a series of obstacles. Candide’s innocence is mainly due to his Mentor Pangloss’s philosophy that everything is for the best. The only thing that allows him to continue his journey through the world is his desire to marry Cunegonde and the optimism Candide possesses. Candides morals change a lot throughout the story and he is no longer innocent of the ways of the world.
...Because of Gandhi’s power, his flaw, and his catastrophe, one would say that Gandhi fits the model of a Greek tragic hero. Gandhi’s power was his heightened goodness, proven by his innumerable civil disobedience acts, where he continued to fight even while he was regularly jailed. His flaw was his tolerance and acceptance of everyone which led to his catastrophic assassination by Nathuram Godse. Gandhi’s teachings of nonviolence and peace still live on today, as they have inspired many other human rights leaders, such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. Gandhi’s teachings are responsible for the successes of civil rights movements in other countries. He not only helped free India from British rule, but also gave people new thoughts about violence and imperialism around the world. Even today, India continues to live and remember the tutelage of Gandhi.
Throughout the novel Candide experiences an array of good and bad. During the bad, Candide tends to grow as a character when he acknowledges his own predicament and recognizes his needs, without philosophizing as Pangloss does. After escaping the Bulgars, Candide, penniless and hungry, encounters an orator who inquires as to whether Candide believes the pope is anti-Christ. Candide replies, “’I’ve not heard it said before now,’ replied Candide, ‘but whether
Mohandas Gandhi’s existence in this world inevitably changed it forever. There is no denying this. A man that came from beginnings that would have made change unfathomable, not only stood above the standards of his society, but also joined many others in his quest for a more equal and peaceful system. Not only, did he make an impact in his situation, but he set the standard for generations to come on what the process looks without war and fighting to bring about a massive change in laws and treatment of people. His methods were not only effective for himself, but those that would model his behavior for future endeavors.
In the novel Candide by Voltaire, Candide had the foundation of a fulfilling life laid out for him. He had a stable job working for a nobleman, a good mentor, and even a girl that he knew was perfect for him. Everything was well until he made a mistake with the girl he loved and was kicked out of his city, shattering all his stability and forcing him to encounter the realities of the world he lived in. Voltaire uses character interactions to comment on the human condition by pairing an optimistic view with naivety during Candide’s youth and a pessimistic view after his experiences with tragedy, therefore criticizing some of the common optimistic worldviews during his time and leaving more of a pessimistic outlook at the end of Candide’s journey.
Candide is introduced as a young man living a very privileged life in the castle of the Baron of Thunder-ten-tronckh in Westphalia. He is revealed as being quite a naïve and easy trusting young man who is banished from the castle for his love of the Baron’s daughter, Miss Cunégonde. His banishment and desire to be with Miss Cunégonde sets him on a path to discover another way to make their love story possible. Even though his life is filled with unfortunate bizarre happenings that range from losing the love of his life, being forced to join the army and from rags to riches, he sticks to optimism hoping all will be well. He philosophically thinks everything happens for a reason and therefore one has to live through the positive and negatives
He had learned from a Turk that by keeping to themselves and cultivating that it had kept them from three great evils, weariness, vice , and want; all of which Candide and his companions had experience during their travels. By refraining from public life would keep him from being exposed to the evils of the world as he has had in the past. Candide accepted things as they are because he was a believer of Pangloss and his teachings of methaphysico-theologico-cosmolo-nigology; no effect without a cause, that things cannot be otherwise than as they are; for all being created for an end and all is necessary for the best end. But at the end of the book, Candide, didn’t believe in Pangloss’ teachings and by retreating to his garden, he had in a since
Gandhi is motivated by religious means; he believes that everyone is equal in God’s eyes. He gets involved in several movements for equality, and he stresses non-violence very strongly. The Indians are very mad because British rule continues to limit their rights. They are supposed to all get fingerprinted, and their marriage laws are invalid. Gandhi’s followers vow to fight their oppressors to the death, but he discourages them from violence.
Mahatma Gandhi has had a lasting effect on our world today. His philosophy and ideals have been adopted by many prominent figures in society. A powerful leader, he helped two countries in their struggle for basic rights. Gandhi is an amazing example of the things that can be achieved without violence. He proved that satyagraha is a powerful path to victory. Since his time many leaders have been inspired by his example and anyone who tries to change the world for the better using peaceful means owes something to Gandhi.
Gandhi was a great man in a lot of ways he was born on October 2, 1869 in Western India. At the age of thirteen he married Kasturbi who was also thirteen before his father died. When he did his mother sent him to law school in England this was in 1888. While he was there he fell in love so to speak with the nonviolent ways of the Hindu scriptures of the Bhagavad-Gita, and in the bible tellings of Jesus.
To conclude, Mahatma Gandhi is a very inspirational role model who not only reacted to violence without violence but overcame it and (for the most part) succeeded in life without violence. He had everything going against him but still found a way to get what he most desperately strived for: peace. He was a victim of bullying and segregation and looked past the odds and was inspirational for many people. He is a major role model for many people in the world who try to make this world a better
