Gambling is a major social problem within Australia. The effects of gambling have many negative impacts on an individual’s life, which in turn affects one socially, economically and mentally. Gambling and the role that personality play’s will be discussed within this essay. The essay will further review literature on problem gambling and review how personality impacts on individuals with gambling problems. It will analyse the influence personality has on problem gambling and any other factors that may come into play when an individual become a problem gambler. It will be argued that personality can influence gambling behaviours, but does not necessarily mean that gambling has a personality profile. Specific traits, do play an important …show more content…
Kusyszyn, (1985), argues that gambling is a healthy human activity and those who suffer from compulsive gambling, had already established the personality traits well before they started gambling. Furthermore stating that further research and bigger samples is required in order to confirm the findings (p, 63). Savage (2016) argues that the diversity of gambling can create challenges when trying to define the relationship between personality and gambling (Savage, 2016, p.1198). This may be due to the fact that most adults gamble responsibly as a pass time, even if it is just buying a lottery ticket. Current literature has found that in terms of personality, problem gamblers have scored higher than nongamblers (MacLaren, 2015, p.24). MacLaren argues that dues to the individual’s preference on which game they play placed limitations on results which may have scored low out of favourability …show more content…
It may be possible that people turn to gambling as an escape from their disorder. However, it could also be possible that depression could also be a result of problem gambling. According to Dannewitz (2007) Some researchers have speculated alternatively that problem gambling is linked to psychological disorders such as depression (p.308). One may argue that depression would make no difference in gambling. Dannewizz states that results contradicted previous researchers. They showed that there was no difference between depressed and non-depressed individuals. It should be noted that the results show that there is a relationship between gambling and depression, but it is not clear of what is (2007, p.315) . For example, one could argue that depression has many dimensions which would be hard to place which ones are associated with problem gambling. It could be argued that people with emotional vulnerability and low self-esteem the emotionally vulnerable, affective disturbances, poor coping skills, dealing with painful emotional experiences, social isolation, and low self-esteem, efficacy and image act to exacerbate the effect of the conditioning and cognitive processes. Under these circumstances, emotional escape plays a major motivational role. For the biologically-based impulsive gamblers, genetic and neurochemical factors contribute to impulsivity and need for

Expanding gambling can increase gambling addiction. Compulsive gambling addiction is a social issue that is related to gambling. In the past, compulsive gambling was thought of as an issue or behavior for adults. However, “today’s youth are the first generation to grow up in a society where gambling is legal, easily accessible, and in most cases government supported” (Monaghan & Derevensky 537). Gambling is often advertised in the media as a quick and easy way to “get rich” and is rarely seen
There are many reasons why people gamble and what the advantages and disadvantages are of risking your bank account on the roll of the dice or the luck of the draw. I originally set out to try and explain why people gamble, but I realized that gambling is just as much of a business or industry as anything else. I researched Foxwoods casino, in CT, and the business behind that. From there I will attempt to explain the “cause and effect” of gambling. Gambling has made much more sense to me now, and I hope it will do the same for you.
Over the past couple decades, sports gambling has become a growing industry and a hotly debated topic. Sports gambling is the act of placing a monetary wager on a sporting event for a specific outcome to happen. Daniel P. Connaughton claims sports gambling has always been an attractive medium for betting because the outcome of the games is unknown and so many factors go into a sports game (436). But currently as it stands in the United States, people may only bet on sports in Nevada. Yet the industry continues to expand and according to Jeffrey Roske, “Americans wager over $500 billion per year on sports. Of this staggering total, only $2-$3 billion per year are gambled legally within the state of Nevada…” (463). Roske’s evidence brings up
“And a few studies suggest that some people are especially vulnerable to both drug addiction and compulsive gambling because their reward circuitry is inherently underactive—which may partially explain why they seek big thrills in the first place” (Jabr). For Bachmann, her reward was not only winning money but having that “thrill” to keep herself happy since her environment and her personal problems made her feel lonely. Environment plays a huge role in Bachmann’s gambling addiction because it motivates her to go to the casino more. “Drugs, perhaps, are like chemical electrodes. They excite that dormant median forebrain bundle, causing it to crave more and more the same way scratching a bug bite only ignites the itch” (Slater). Comparing drugs to gambling is very similar because when Bachmann is gambling she feels excited and she craves it because she wants to get away from reality. Her environment at home gave off negative vibes because her husband is at work all the time and when he got home they had nothing to talk about. Also, her father and brother won awards in song writing which gave her an impression that she is worthless because she became a

The adrenaline-rushing feeling of gambling offers people the idea that opportunity lies within their hands. Unfortunately, there are far too many consequences to gambling to even begin to count. To win you must play, and to win big you must play big. As more gamblers can recall their losses rather than their winnings, gamblers are often dealt with poor hands and must play the risky game to stay alive. Even though gambling has so many faults, some still fall under its corruptions because of gambling’s deceiving fallacies.
A person’s personality has been the subject of psychological scrutiny for many years. Psychologists have drawn up several theories in an attempt to accurately predict and determine one’s personality. Foremost amongst these, is the “Big Five Trait Theory” which stemmed from Raymond B. Cattell’s theory.
Maxi Chambers, a former gambling addict, recalled a personal life story about winning five hundred dollars her first time gambling in her article “What I Lost Gambling.” She stated this event led to an uncontrollable need to gamble more frequently every week. In a compulsive gambler, the high from winning overpowers the disappointment from losing. This causes him or her to forget how much money has been lost and focus on trying to win
We need to a continuous support for research on emerging challenges from gambling. In order to address the issue of gambling effectively through research, monitoring and evaluation we need to define and identify problem gamblers.
With so much money at stake, the average gambler does not stand a chance. against this big business. The casinos go to every length to analyze what makes a gambler bet, stay longer, and lose as much money as possible. Gamblers who come to casinos with the intention of winning money are habitually disappointed in the snare. As casino crime lord, Meyer Lansky's universal.

There is a major issue to be dealt with, which is spreading with little regulatory oversight and no effective screens against participation by the young and the vulnerable. Internet gambling represents one of the fastest growing segments of online activity with more than seven hundred web sites now providing users the opportunity to wager everything from casino games to sporting events. According to internet research firms, the industry will pull in $1.5 billion in world-wide revenues this year. That figure is expected to hit at least $6 billion by 2006. Also, a survey conducted by the Pew Internet and American Life Project concluded that $4.5 million Americans have gambled online and that 1 million gamble online everyday.
