Families nowadays tend to be smaller because couples are deciding to have less kids, which for them means less responsibilities. Gallup explains that in the year 1971 there was a big decreased in childbirth, as Americans have decided to have less kids compared to the previous years where the ideal family was having four kids or more. Factors associated with this change have been the birth control pill, the increasing in cost of raising kids, and as we already discussed the increase of more women participating in the labor force. In colonial times, there was no control pills yet that’s why the women usually had many kids. Also over the decades the average cost of raising a child has become expensive and continues to do so. The decrease in family structure quickly began to affect opportunity inequality among individuals. Those children with “neo-traditional” marriages are more like to receive a college degree rather than those without. Having a lower-income family reduces educational opportunities children have. While a child from a two-income family may attend a private school with resources that assist them in getting into ivy league schools, a kid from a single parent family may have to attend a public school where there is not even access to a computer lab or extracurricular activities. The lack of education these kids have contributes to their lack of opportunity to receive a college degree. Normally, a college degree allows individuals to receive a higher income than those who just have a high-school diploma. They simply are not exposed to the resources to succeed.
