Kurt Vonnegut's Galapagos was written one million years ahead of the year 1986 AD. In this book, Vonnegut argues that the ultimate effect of humanity's sociological problems with technology is that man's intelligence will be the downfall and destruction of the human race. The essential point made by Vonnegut in this work is that the "great big brains" of humanity drives people to go further into technology and create new weapons that will lead to the demolition of man kind; Vonnegut disagreed against virtually every technological development (made by “big brains”).
It was the humans’ “big brains” that always gave them foolish or reckless ideas that almost always had negative results. Though it may tell the rest of your body to do the things that make you eat, breathe and sleep, it will occasionally tell you to something that might endanger or kill you. For example, Mary Hepburn’s big brain was telling her she had nothing to live for, and gave her the urge to grab the plastic wrap from her red gown to suffocate herself and commit suicide (page 26).

Vonnegut explains in his story that when misused, technology will take away who people really are. The narrator explains that since George is above average in intelligence the government has forced to wear “a little mental handicap radio in his ear. He was required by law to wear it at all times. It was tuned to a government transmitter. Every twenty seconds or so, the transmitter would send out some sharp noise to keep people like George from taking unfair advantage of their brains.” (38). While Benet explains that when technology is used too quickly without learning about the possible outcome it could lead to utter destruction. Also it can be sublime and could lead to astounding discoveries, yet too many quick technology advancements are not always good. Vonnegut's writing style throughout the novel is very flip, light, and sarcastic. The narrator's observations and the events occurring during the novel reflect a dark view of humanity which can only be mocked by humor. At the beginning of the novel the narrator is researching for a book he is writing. The book was to be about the day the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and the lives of the people who created the bomb. The narrator travels through the plot of the story, with characters flying in and out, in almost a daze. He is involved in events which are helplessly beyond his control, but which are inevitably leading to a destination at the end.
In the late 1980’s Kurt Vonnegut wrote a novel; Galapagos. The novel was written on a story that was a futuristic presumption where a ghost stood witness to the end of human race. The main reason behind the doom of the humans, in the novel, was because according to the writer, the humans had exceeded all levels of technology and in their greed and attempt of gaining from the world as much as possible they ended up vanishing their own race from the face of the earth. Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Pardoner's Tale," a relatively straightforward satirical and anti-capitalist view of the church, contrasts motifs of sin with the salvational properties of religion to draw out the complex self-loathing of the emasculated Pardoner. The Pardoner’s tale is an epologia of a pardoner who has the power from the church to forgive others for their sins but makes a living out of lying and tricking his audience. Throughout the Pardoner’s Tale he preaches about greed, drinking, blasphemy, and gambling but in the Pardoner’s Prologue he admits to committing these sins himself. The pardoner is really just a 14th century con artist who makes a living by his own hypocrisy.
It is commonly believed that technology aids in the advancements of society and the idea that technology comes with its own set of repercussions is often ignored. Bereft of morals, the nefarious pardoner sells fake relics to poor country priests and intentionally make monkeys of them and their congregation. Consciously admitting his sins, the pardoner dissembles his true nature by telling a tale that decries the sins of greed, which is quite ironic.
First of all, the pardoner says that money is the root of all evil, yet he also claims that he loves nothing more than money. In doing this, he is being verbally ironic. He continues on to say that those men who do not follow Christian morals are sinful, but he does not truly believe this as he does not follow Christian morals himself. This effectively exempts himself from the Christian text he portrays. He is essentially a hypocrite that exploits Christian principles in moral tales to steal money from the people he is supposed to pardon. He does this to fill his need for
“The Pardoner’s Tale” represents the class of clergymen. The Pardoner is a man who works for the church and relieves people from their sins. He carries scrolls that supposedly are written by the Pope, and sells them to people who have committed immoral acts. He knows that he himself is committing immoral acts, but has no intent to change himself at all. His story shows corruption of the church and how clergymen were situated back in the middle ages. When this technological singularity is reached, it is hypothesized that man’s greatest creation, an artificial sapient being, will supersede human brain capacity. According to some, this event will lead to the extermination of mankind as humans are deemed obsolete. Yet others are projecting a mergence between A.I. and Humanity, a gradual conversion of man and machine. Will the projected apex of our technical evolution be a gradual or abrupt end of mankind?
