To begin, Gabby Douglas is famous for her gymnastic skills. She is also know for being the face of the U.S.A. gymnastics team. She is good in both individual and team events. Gabby is important because of her Olympic metals, her childhood, and her Olympic troubles. Gabby Douglas is a famous Olympian with many victories. She has won many gold medals in individual and team events. She became the face of the U.S.A. gymnastics team by the end of the 2012 Olympics (Yaeger). At first she didn't think she was doing as good as she could have been. Soon after she started to make bigger expectations and later got better (Radnofsky). She wanted to be in gymnastics to get people interested in trying the sport. She went to the Olympics to inspire people and get more African Americans interested in gymnastics (“Americas Sweetheart”). She had many goals for her future. Gabby Douglas had an interesting childhood.
Her gymnastics career was started not by watching TV, or television, but by being inspired by her sister. She enjoyed watching her sister do tricks, soon after her sister taught her some tricks and she became passionate about the sport (Yeager). When she got older she wanted to become an olympian. When she was 14, she moved to Iowa to train with Laing Chow to prepare her for the Olympics (Yaeger). Gabby was introduced to gymnastics while living in Virginia Beach. Her sister Arielle introduced her to gymnastics (Yeager). Gabby was at a young age when she started formal training. At age six she started with her formal training and in 2004 she became the Virginia State Champion (“America’s”). To summarize, Gabby childhood contained her becoming interested in gymnastics by her sister, her becoming a Virginia State Champion, and moving to Iowa with her dad to
training. Even though she was very successful and had a interesting childhood she had many struggles too. Some of her troubles where so bad she wanted to give up being a professional gymnast. When she was thinking about quitting her mom got disappointed, because they spent a lot of time and money with her gymnastics (Yaeger). Another trouble was people not believing in her. She was always told she could not make it to the Olympics and she proved them wrong (Yaeger). Eventually she made it to the Olympics, but she still has many goals. One of her goals that she has is to reach full potential which she feels she has not done yet. In summary she has had many troubles and was able to over come her struggles. To conclude, Gabby is a very skilled gymnast that has been very successful. She has also had some hard times and broken bones. Gabby is wonderful at what she does and is a trained professional. Her importance is from her olympic metals, her childhood, and her troubles along the way.
The athlete I chose is Natasha Watley. She is a professional softball player and the first African-American female to play on the USA softball team in the Olympics. She’s a former collegiate 4-time First Team All-American who played for the UCLA Bruins, the USA Softball Women’s National Team, and for the USSSA Pride. She helped the Bruins will multiple championships and also holds numerous records and one of the few players to bat at least .400 with 300 hits, 200 runs, and 100 stolen bases. She’s also the career hits leader in the National Pro Fast pitch. She won the gold medal in the 2004 summer Olympics and a silver in the Beijing Olympics. She was inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014.
Gabby Douglas was the first African-American female gymnast in Olympic history to become the individual All-Around champion. In the 2012 Olympic Games, she won gold in the team competition and the individual competition. She is a gymnastics phenom. From the beginning of her career to where she is today, she has been a true trooper through everything. Gabrielle Douglas is an inspiration to me and many others because she overcame being homeless,moved in with a new family, and won Olympic gold in gymnastics.

When asked to write about an important activist who has demonstrated protest, I immediately drifted towards a Hispanic and/or feminist activist. Various names came across my mind initially such as Cesar Chavez and Joan Baez but as a later discussion in class concluded, there are numerous others who are rarely highlighted for their activism and struggles, which lead to me researching more. In my research I came across Dolores Huerta, an American labor leader and civil rights activist, who I felt was an underdog and brushed over activist in the Hispanic community.

Tina fey, television writer, screenwriter, actress, comedian, and mother, has taken the world by storm. Tina Fey has a powerful influence on our world today and she has become a worldwide icon in the eyes of many young women. Tina Fey may have been THE woman to make it stylish to wear glasses in the mid-2000s, but there is more to this multi-talented woman then those trademark black-rimmed spectacles.

Franchesca Hutton-Lau has managed to excel in this challenging and dangerous sport, handle a job, school, and still be involved in church. Shirley Chisholm was a crucial figure in Black politics, and the first African-American woman elected to the U.S. Congress. She defeated civil rights leader James Farmer on November 5, 1968, and served 7 terms in the House of Representatives till 1982. Also, she was the first woman and person of color to run for President. Chisholm is a model of independence and honesty and has championed several issues including civil rights, aid for the poor, and women 's rights.
Mary McLeod Bethune was an African American educator, activist, and advisor. She believed that education provided the key to racial advancement. She became an educator and did much to contribute to American society. Mary Bethune also became very involved in government service. She started her own civil rights organization working on critical issues for African Americans and also helped many presidents in certain affairs. Mary McLeod Bethune gave the speech “What Does American Democracy Mean to Me?” November 23. 1939. The speech was given on America’s Town Meeting of the Air, which was a radio show in New York that discussed American Politics. The speech remains significant today. This speech is about Mary’s personal meaning of democracy. She speaks on the relation between democracy and African Americans. She reminded listeners that African Americans have always been willing to do whatever it takes for democracy and what it stands for. Today many African American contribute to the democracy, making this speech relatable to them.
Hope Amelia Solo was born on the 30th of July in 1981 in Richland, Washington. As a young child, she was a forward for a soccer team and showed amazing potential at a young age. She scored 109 goals while in this position and was peerless. Her real career did not start until her high school years which led to her being named an All-American twice by Parade magazine. Her college accomplishments led to her being named to the 2004 Olympic team (“Hope” 1). Hope attended the Univeristy of Washington for all four years of her college career. While in college, she earned NSCAA All-American honors in her last three years. Sojourner Truth was a Civil Rights Activist, and a Women’s Rights Activist 1797-1883. Sojourner Truth was known for spontaneous speech on racial equal opportunities. Her speech “Aint I a Women? “Was given to an Ohio Women’s Rights convention in 1851. Sojourner Truth’s was a slave in New York, where she was born and raised and was sold into slavery at an early age (bio, 2016)
This darling little curly top young star became an extraordinary role model for many people during the Great Depression Era. So who is the little girl I refer to? I am speaking about Shirley Temple Black, perhaps best known to most of us as that little golden star “Shirley Temple”. She stared in many motion pictures and television roles such as Heidi, Little Miss Maker, Curly Top, and the Littlest Rebel, just to name a few. This young child became an exemplarily visionary leader role model to many. She enriched the world by her astounding accomplishments not only as a young star but as her leadership role the political field arena, (Forbes, 2014). I will briefly be pointing out her accomplishments that made her a visionary and ethical leader for many and why I believe her leadership skills has made an impact to me.

Abraham Lincoln is also known for his determination towards ending slavery. One of Abraham Lincoln’s political accomplishments was issuing the Emancipation Proclamation. Before his presidency, Lincoln was not that knowledgeable about the military because he never really had a proper education when he was small. However, Lincoln’s entire presidency basically took place during the war.
