Being raised as the eldest of five siblings by immigrant parents who were never able to finish school and pursue their ambitions because of their unfortunate financial situations. Opportunities like the one GHP is offering will not only be a life altering experience, but an experience that will expand my leadership, my communication skills, and my connections in the real world. I not only chose to apply to GHP because of the opportunity to challenge my skills on balancing school, student organizations, volunteer activities, and work but in hopes of showing my fellow peers, teachers, parents, and for younger siblings that it is possible to achieve your dreams even for a family that has financially struggled all through their lives. My parents have always motivated me to take every opportunity that is available to further guide me in my pathway to success. I would continually ponder over questions on the mechanics of nature and human beings. Science has always been a main focus of mine. I distinctly remember when my parents bought our first computer when I was six years old. On the computer I would always be watching videos or reading on science topics. I would always be conducting my own science experiments. The reaction from mixing baking soda with vinegar to form a volcano would always amaze me as a child. Growing up I would continually and consistently add to my knowledge of science through the tough courses I would take in school. I am able to look back into the memories of my younger self and understand why baking soda and vinegar, when mixed, form an eruption. Growing up Haitian, it’s the cultural norm for the parents to depend on the oldest to care for the youngest and household needs. At the young age of eight years old, my parents taught me responsibility and how to humble myself. They depended on me while they both worked long hours, my mother as a Certified Nursing Assistant and my father as a truck driver. When my parents were growing up in Haiti, they were the lucky ones to have the opportunity of going to school to gain an education. Haiti is a poor country and poverty is at an all-time high still to this day. So my parents strived to live the American dream and moved from Haiti to Miami and planted within my brother and me the seed to dream big and make a difference. Thanks to my family
When my first grade teacher asked me what I wanted to be in the future I told her, “I want to be a doctor.” My answer stayed exactly the same when my eleventh grade English teacher asked the question. Ever since I was little science has always captured my interest. I was fascinated by the way our body worked and how everything had an explanation behind it.
The adversity that was displayed through racial inequalities became a platform for me to trust myself even more along with advocating an example for future young students to neglect any doubt previously conceived of them. Though extremely grateful for all of the privilege in my life, it was difficult to realize my fortune until working with the teens at RYP who often do not have two parents, have limited adult influences, and live below the poverty line, making education an afterthought. From the perspective of a tutor and mentor, the educational support that the teens require is unquestionable, just like the injustices they face daily. Through service, not only does one gain perspective into the needs of the local community, but also insight into systemic issues of racism, poverty, crime, education and more. By participating in service and trying to counteract the sources of need for others, one will undoubtedly change their perspective of the framework question, knowing that the very least one should help others.
As a daughter of immigrants and being an immigrant myself, I knew I had to work hard to become somebody in life to prove that my parents’ struggles were worth every second. My journey began at the age of eight years old, I had to pick up everything and leave my life behind in El Salvador to begin a new one in California. The transition was not easy though what made it possible was learning English and being able to adapt. The idea to continue my education after high school involved my role models who planted in me the importance of education and encouraged me to go through the enrollment process; although there were financial challenges, I have found my way into college.
In the 21st century, if an individual decides to make a major commitment or resolution, they have the utmost support from their peers and family members. However, when a first-generation college student decides on furthering their education, the dearest people close to the student seem to disappear. Linda Banks-Santilli (2015) claims that first-generation students apply to a single college and without the help of a parent (para. 13). Although Banks-Santilli does not say so directly, she assumes that the students can not afford multiple application fees and the students are unsure on how to determine which college is a good fit, as their parents have not taken them on a college tour. When I was born, my family had just migrated to California from Mexico. In a new country, my father worked in landscaping earning less than $4 dollars an hour, while my mother relied on public transportation to take her newborn child to and from doctor visits. In the land of opportunity, my family struggled to put a roof over our heads. But never discouraged, my parents sought to achieve their goals and worked tirelessly to raise my younger brother and I. From a young age, I was taught the importance of education; this became a major catalyst in my life. My desire to excel academically was not for self-gain, but my way of contributing to my family’s goals and aspirations.
Why do I deserve the UNGMS scholarship and what are my educational and career goals?
I have been looking at pursuing a career within the Health Care Profession for many years now, and whilst I was researching opportunities I discovered the Operating Department Practice (ODP) course at Northumbria University. I attended an open day, and after speaking to the course tutors and students, It has only strengthened my desire to become one. I have attended a Cardio Theatre visit which was interesting and informative as well as visiting the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) website and the College of Operating Department Practitioners (CODP) website to explore the role further.
Nevertheless, I know that if I keep working hard I can accomplish anything that I put my mind to like my father once told me. I’m not God, so I cannot change the world, but I know that I can make a difference with my determination and dedication to this issue. My dream is to one day open a center in a low-income county and offer services to the immigrant community. I don’t want to go to law school because I cannot stand the unfairness or because my family expects me to do so. This is something that I’ve been wanting for myself because I know that I can excel no matter what obstacle gets in my way. I’m not perfect, but I’ve gone long ways and I will keep working my way up. My legal education will not be based on theories in which I’ll be confused in applying to life. I know exactly what I want and how to use my law school education and I’m ready to begin.
I have always been fascinated with science-oriented interests. I remember being young and intrigued by the complexity of the human body. As I grew, puzzles and critical thinking became essential to my learning process.
I’m a hardworking citizen who is currently a college student with Immigrant Parents. The amount of disadvantages for a family are indeed absolutely immense. Some of these disadvantages involve low income, college struggles, and health sacrifices. Motivations is certainly a key factor of my drive and has played a huge factor in my life.

I am the product of divorced parents, poverty stricken environments, and a blended family, but I refuse to let that dictate the outcome of my life. At the age of ten, I had to assume the role of a fatherly figure to my three siblings, so I missed out on the typical childhood most would have had. I grew up in neighborhoods where gangs and criminal acts of violence were a pervasive occurrence, but I resiliently did not allow the peer pressures of others to force me to conform to their way of life. By the age of 15, I received my worker 's permit, and that allowed me the ability to help my mother financially in the absence of my father’s income. I worked the maximum amount of hours I could while balancing my academics and extracurricular school activities.
