The purpose of this essay is to discuss the health pattern and function of the Boodie’s family in an effort to achieve optimal health outcomes. Assessing the entire family is important. “A family functions together and if at any point there is a member with a dysfunctional health pattern, then the whole family is affected” (Edelman, 2014). “Family members are the first influence on a person’s view of health. They function as support systems for one another, assist with providing basic human needs and define both acceptable and unacceptable values and behavior” (Lecture 4, 2011). The collection of data on assessment of this family will be used through the nursing process and critical thinking to arrive at the best diagnoses and intervention to promote health and wellness in this family. In order to obtain the necessary data required, the nurse needs to follow a proper health assessment guide. “Gordon’s 11 functional health pattern serves as a framework, data is collected and assessed, allowing for the application of nursing diagnosis and interventions that encompass a holistic view of the client” (Lecture 4, 2011). The Gordon’s Functional Health Pattern seemed to be the most effective assessment guide and as such was used to assess this family. Assessment of …show more content…
Elimination pattern varies among family members. No bowel or bladder problems. They all have regular bowel movements and voids frequently without complaints. The mother and daughter exercises at least three days per week. The father, who can be unbalanced at times, walks every day for one hour. If there is no one at home to accompany him, he will do so by himself and this has been going on for two years without a problem. While walking he stays in touch with family members every fifteen minutes. Due to his illness, he is unable to do other forms of exercises. He however enjoys going to the movies and shows with his wife and
This assignment allows for the application of community and public health nursing concepts learned in theory and clinical by implementing them through an assigned virtual family. These learned elements are directed toward the Grape family from the movie “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?”. The public health nurse (PHN) aims to recognize the various stressors in the Grape family and provide relevant resources that can prevent further stress and negative interference on the family unit and community. This is completed by conducting a thorough family assessment from which a plan with interventions is created. An analysis of the interventions along with the outcomes will be provided. A genogram and ecomap are significant tools used to address the genetic
...concerns appropriate interventions were assigned to each one. For the priority concern of the family’s ability to cope and their risk of depression commendation and interventative questioning were the chosen interventions. For the priority concern of Gilberts care giver burnout and risk for compassion fatigue commendation and encouraging respite were chosen. The Grape family is a fitting example of the complex difficulties a family can have when they are faced with the difficulty of dealing with a chronic illness and tragedy. This paper demonstrates the importance of assessing and creating interventions for a family in a way which includes every member of the family not only the ones with complications. Raising the question should patients who are suffering from chronic illnesses better off to be treated as an individual or as a member of a functional family unit?
D1: I have decided to look at a 6 year old going through bereavement. Bereavement means to lose an individual very close to you. When children go through bereavement they are most likely to feel sad and upset about the person’s death. Children at a young age may not understand when a family member dies. Children may not understand bereavement. For example a 6 year old’s father been in a car crash and has died from that incident. Death is unpredictable and children can’t be prepared for a death of a family member as no one knows when someone is going to die or not. Unfortunately every child can experience bereavement even when a pet dies. It is important that we are aware that effects on the child so we can support them in the aftermath.
This week we were assigned to assess the Perez Family, this assessment was tailored towards exploring the family’s dynamic and our thoughts on how we as nurses could improve their developmental outcomes. The Perez’s have a three- generational family form, which consist of married twenty somethings, a young and growing family, and grandmother all living under one roof. This family is in multiple stages of development that further the stresses in their daily lives. Although the case study does not mention how long the “main characters” Maria and her husband Jamie have been married, because of their age it is safe to assume that they are newly married. Maria and Jamie have yet to lay a stable foundation (marriage) for themselves, yet alone their
What does ‘care’ mean? Care is the provision of what is necessary for your health, welfare and protection of someone or something. The Calgary Family Assessment Model (CFAM) is a well-known comprehensive and multidimensional template used by nurses to assess families. CFAM begins by having the nurse visit with the family and gain insight on the family’s functioning at a particular point in time. Interviewing the family allows the nurse to assess and identify potential issues. Furthermore, the CFAM consists of three main assessment categories, known as structural, developmental, and functional. Each of these categories contains several subcategories that allow the nurse to examine all aspects of a family’s functioning. The goal of the CFAM is for the nurse to openly discuss family issues, provide insight to families from an outside perspective and guide them towards their own problem solving tactics. CFAM allows families and nurse to develop a plan of care that is mutually agreed upon. The following paper illustrates a family assessment completed using the CFAM and applies nursing diagnoses and interventions relevant to the family’s current issues (Wright & Leahey, 2013).

Nursing theories are essential to effective and efficient nursing practice. The use of nursing theories has, and continues, to contribute to the development of nursing knowledge and its practice (Ahmed, 2001). Integrating these theories into practice provides guidance in achieving the goals of health promotion and disease prevention (Ahmed, 2001). The middle range nursing theory of Family Stress and Adaptation by Geri LoBiondo-Wood, requires nurses to understand the various processes and stages of the illness and the illness experience. Nurses must also understand that a family’s experience of stress, crisis, adjustment and adaptation is an ongoing and dynamic process (Smith & Liehr, 2008).
Health is an individual’s ability as well as communities to reach their potential. Health is not the absence of sickness, as measured by clinical presentations, but of a functioning sound body, soul and spirit. The World Health Organization defines health as an optimistic notion putting emphasis on social, personal means and physical capabilities (WHO, 1998). Health promotion practice has many phases that guide and ensure its effectiveness. It serves to prevent the development major health problems; this ideal also needs to be incorporated fused into nursing students’ learning curricula in order have a successful outcome. In addition, health promotion should also be included in the health program

Gordon’s functional health pattern was proposed and developed by Marjory Gordon. It is the method used by nurse to provide a comprehensive assessment on the client. Gordon’s functional health pattern is divided into 11 categories. These categories are a systematic and standardized approach to data collection. Each of the categories enables the nurse to determine the different factors of health and human function. These categories are health perception and health management, nutrition and metabolism, urine and waste elimination, activity and exercise, cognition and perception, sleep and rest, self-perception and self-concept, roles and relationships, sexuality and reproduction, coping and stress tolerance, and values and belief (Functional Health Patterns, 2005).
