Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is the process of identifying the conditions and functions that are associated with a challenging behavior by using indirect and direct assessment procedures. It is also conducted to help teachers find ways to address the challenging behaviors. The purpose is essentially to determine when, where and why a challenging behavior occurs. The legal requirements for an FBA are that they must include multiple sources of data as required by IDEA 2004. Also, FBAs must be used appropriately and are not solely for sending students to IAES and can be used to assess behaviors of students.

The indirect assessment methods of data collection occur when data is gathered from individuals who know the child well or work with them in an educational setting. This can be done through many different ways, such as by conducting interviews and utilizing rating scales. Some examples that are highlighted in the text are the Functional Assessment Checklist: Teachers and Staff (FACTS) and the Teacher Team Questionnaire. The indirect method helps identify when, where and why challenging behaviors occur by pulling information from people and records, instead of observing the student.
The direct assessment method of data collection occurs when the student is observed in their environment that is associated with the occurrences of the behaviors. It typically involves the student and teacher being observed by others to help identify the when, where and why of the challenging behavior. Positive behavioral support strategies make problem behavior irrelevant by redesigning the environment. Positive behavioral support strategies teach students new skills that are meant to replace the problem behavior with a socially-acceptable alternative. Addressing the larger social context surrounding a student can reduce the amount of time spent implementing intensive positive behavioral support plans. Functional assessment gathers information regarding the events that both immediately precede problem behavior and the situations where a student is successful.
Students who frequently engage in off-task and inappropriate behavior disrupt the classroom and hinder learning for other students (Riley, et.al, 2011). In order to reduce off-task behaviors exhibited by a particular student, it is crucial to determine the function of the behavior by conducting a functional behavioral assessment (FBA). Once the cause of the behavior is found, teachers can take steps to reduce the inappropriate behavior by implanting strategies to decrease their occurrence.
A Functional Behavior Assessment is beneficial for the student, parents and teachers. As stated within the definition of FBA, it helps determine the purpose of the undesirable behavior. By knowing this, the parents and teachers can create strategies to use with the student or teach the student to help decrease and possibly fade away that undesirable behavior. The FBA also help determine the best educational placement for the student and other services that can be provided for him/her to help the behavioral issues that is displaying. Using a FBA can also help the student identify appropriate behavior to use within different situations as a substitute for the ones that caused him/her to get in trouble with.

When testing a child, make sure that the testing method used is appropriate for that child. For example, if giving a test that relies on visual aids to administer the test, it is important that the teacher is certain that all the children have good enough vision to clearly see the aids. An in-depth look is necessary to see what the children really know before giving them a poor grade. When assessments are properly developed and interpreted, they can help teachers better understand their students learning progress and needs, by providing the resources to collect evidence that indicates what information their students know and what skills they can perform. Assessments help teachers to not only identify and monitor learners’ strengths, weaknesses, learning and progress but also help them to better plan and conduct instruction.
