Functional assessment is used by researchers to gather data that will help them understand a person’s behavior and the behavior’s causes and effects. The environmental events that take place before the problem behavior are called antecedents, and the events that take place after are called consequences. Both are observed to see if they have any effect on the behavior, that is, if they are associated with and maintain its occurrence. There are many ways in which researchers can prove if certain events cause the behavior, one of them being functional analysis methods. This information can help guide the researcher and the treatment plans for the individual. This technique hopes to teach and employ new positive behaviors, and diminish and eventually terminate negative outcomes. Researchers have greatly praised the use of functional analysis as it has been proven to be more effective and ethical than the other option, punishment. Punishment has been criticized for its negative execution and possible serious side effects, such as aggression and negative emotional responses. There are several steps that must be followed in order to perform a functional analysis and identify the functions of a problem behavior. First, the individual must be observed so that the problem behavior can be monitored and recorded. This leads to various research questions that must be analyzed and answered in order to provide the best treatment for the participant
The best way to describe Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is to understand human behavior, what causes the behavior and how to use evidence-based techniques to shape the individual’s behavior. I also view ABA as therapy for individuals who struggle with behavioral issues, finding ways to replace problem behaviors and reinforcing the participant’s appropriate behaviors in specific settings.
First of all, through this assignment, I have learned that a theory is an interrelated set of concepts and propositions, organized into deductive systems that explain relationships among different aspects. It is an overall explanation of the person in environment configuration, and helps explain why a problem is occurring. It will also provide a social worker with a set of ideas that will help the social worker get a better understanding of the problem. In addition, there are many different theories, and perspectives that are used in the social work field to empower people and to promote a positive society for all. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the science in which tactics derived from the principles of behavior are applied systematically to improve socially significant behavior and experimentation is used to identify the variables responsible for behavior change. The definition of ABA includes six key components. The first component is the practice of applied behavior analysis is guided by the attitudes and methods of science inquiry. Second, all behavior change procedures are described and implemented in a systematic, technological manner. Third, not any means of changing behavior qualifies as applied behavior analysis: Only those procedures conceptually derived from the basic principles of behavior are circumscribed by the field. Fourth, the focus of applied behavior analysis is socially significant behavior. The fifth and sixth parts of the definition specify the twin goals of applied behavior analysis: improvement and understanding. Applied behavior analysis seeks to make meaningful improvement in important behavior and to produce an analysis of the factors responsible for that improvement. I am drawn to the field of applied behavior analysis as it is a way of understanding that allows me to address the needs of my clients and determine how to help them beyond just the label of a diagnosis. Through using applied behavior analysis effectively the origin and meaning of a behavior can be highlighted. When a behavior occurs a detailed report is created to describe the situation prior, what the behavior was and the consequences of that behavior. Furthermore behaviors within some cases can be used as a form of communication when words are not available. For this reason the study of behavior allows me to help my clients and those around me in a way that is more definite and lasting.
Functional behavior assessments are used by behavior analyst to determine the motivation for problem behaviors in clients with disabilities. With direct and indirect assessments of behavior, the behavior analyst can identify the target behavior and develop a hypothesis to test before then developing the behavior intervention plan. The accumulation of this knowledge to develop behavior intervention plans to change these behaviors is directed and regulated through the students individualized education plan as well as Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1997 (IDEA) (Drasgow, 2001). Although IDEA 1997 does not dictate, the exact steps of the functional behavior assessment but rather leaves this up to the individual education plan team.

There is no simple way to deal with these difficult situations, but there are strategies to help. The first step is to identify the purpose of the behavior. A Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), is a systematic set of strategies that are used to determine the underlying function or purpose of a behavior so that an effective intervention plan can be developed (NPDC, 2014).

Typically, a person’s inappropriate behavior serves a function or purpose. It is not uncommon for people to receive reinforcement of their behavior in their environment. For instance, a child might seek attention through unsuitable behavior in the home environment. The response from the parents or caregiver can unwittingly reinforce the behavior through their response to the child. Thus, the child learns to exhibit this behavior in order for his/her needs to be met. One means of addressing a person’s challenging behavior is having a professional undertake a behavioral assessment that identifies and describes the function of the behavior. Through an assessment, positive behavior supports can be identified, developed and implemented through actions plans or goals. However, in order techniques to be effective at decreasing inappropriate behavior, they should be evaluated for effectiveness, feasibility and appropriateness for the person. In addition, strategies should be practical, so parents, schools, or others can implement the techniques
In conclusion, the clinical and statistical approaches in psychology can be beneficial to clinicians depending on the types of situations or specific areas that are being observed. As I mentioned earlier in my paper, the statistical method is useful when results are large and from heterogeneous samples and when they pertain to objective and specific areas. The clinical approach is beneficial in circumstances where situations are unforeseen rendering statistical tests moot. In addition, they are also useful when the interest in an individual case is high. Due to each individual being different and unique in their own way, I believe that clinicians should not rely heavily on statistical predictions and prepackaged treatments as opposed to clinical judgment and individual patients.
Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is the process of identifying the conditions and functions that are associated with a challenging behavior by using indirect and direct assessment procedures. It is also conducted to help teachers find ways to address the challenging behaviors. The purpose is essentially to determine when, where and why a challenging behavior occurs. The legal requirements for an FBA are that they must include multiple sources of data as required by IDEA 2004. Also, FBAs must be used appropriately and are not solely for sending students to IAES and can be used to assess behaviors of students.
Open ended questions can assist the therapist in assessing a client’s stage of change. In addition, it encourages the client to talk. William Glasser “Choice Theory” believed that by implementing a questioning process a therapist can gain knowledge of why a client is unhappy in their life, for example questions like: what the client wants, what they are doing to get what they want, evaluate what they are doing is working for them, how effective is it in achieving their needs, and finally, what else can they do (Glasser, W. 1998) A questioning process can help a therapist to define the clients behaviour with the use of a function analyse. A function analysis helps to identify the antecedents behaviours and consequences of misusing.
