Fruitvale Station
After watching and reviewing the award-winning drama Fruitvale Station, we can see that capital played a tremendous role in Oscar Grant’s life. While there were many forms of capital in the movie, the ones I am going to focus on and that I believe had the biggest impacts on Oscar Grant are as follows: Economic capital, cultural capital, social capital, and symbolic capital. These are also known as Pierre Bourdieu’s Four Types of Capital.
The first capital I am going to discuss is economic capital. In the movie Fruitvale Station, its apparent that this type of capital plays the biggest role in Oscar Grant’s life. The first was in the grocery, where Oscar goes to buy some food for his mother’s birthday. While talking to Cato, he overhears a woman, Katie, who needs help with a party she is preparing. Oscar being the friendly guy he is, decides to help her by letting her talk to his grandma. This is important because later in the movie, just a few minutes before the new year, we see Katie again on the bus. She remembers Oscar from their interaction in the store and after getting his attention, they chat for a bit. Just moments later we see Katie recording the entire encounter between Oscar and the police, becoming his biggest advocate for these unjust
