One would not expect a friendship to be one of the most risky things in life. John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men is an example of a risky friendship. Both characters show a trust and bond for one another in a time where true friendship is hard to come by. While friendships can make people vulnerable, it can also add significance to their lives and make it improve. People in friendships can be vulnerable because of themselves, another person, or their own goals. Steinbeck displays that people can be vulnerable in friendships because of themselves throughout the novel. “George still stared morosely at the fire. When I think of the swell time I could have without you, I go nuts. I never get no peace” (12). George is knows that if he were to leave Lennie behind, that he could live a better life. However, he stays with Lennie because he cares about Lennie. “Friendship in an Age of Economics”, is another piece based on friendships. “If we are to have friends, then we must be willing to approach some among our relationships as offering an invitation to build something outside the scope of our own desires” (May 3). While George might have his own goals in life, he sets them aside to maintain his relationship with Lennie. However, other people …show more content…
“I don’t care what she says and what she does. I seen ‘em poison before, but I never seen no piece of jail bait worse than her. You leave her be” (32). Curley’s wife is making Lennie and George’s friendship vulnerable because George knows that she is tempting to Lennie and that could get them in trouble. “Conversely, our times challenge those friendships. This is why we must reflect on friendship; so that it doesn’t slip away from us under the pressure of a dominant economic discourse” (May 2). Other temptations can put friendships at risk because something else may seem better than what they already have. Goals are another thing that can put a friendship at

In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the need for companionship is shown throughout the book. Crooks, Curley's wife, and George and Lennie all illustrate that you need trustworthy friendships to live your life to its full potential and pursue your dreams.. That is why I believe that, had Lennie lived, he and George could have taken their companionship further and gotten the little cottage they wanted, enabling them to achieve their dream of “'[living] off the fatta the lan''” (14).
It is very apparent that each of the four characters in the two friendships feed off of each other. In Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie are very different, yet they need one other. George is a very independent, loyal, and caring person who takes care of Lennie because Lennie is unable to take care of himself. Although George makes it seem like he would be better off without Lennie, George makes it clear that without him he would be better off. This is evident because of this conversation h regularly had with Lennie” I could go get a job an’

"Were born alone we live alone die alone. Only through love and friendship can we create the illusion for the moment that were not alone” Orson Welles. In this novel, Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck focuses on the loneliness of California ranch life in the 1930’s. One of the most important things in the life is to have a friend, without friends people will suffer from loneliness like in this novel, not everyone in the novel has the same connection and special friendship like George and Lennie’s. Of Mice and Men is the story about lonely men who travel from ranch to ranch not really communicating with other ranch hands. Candy, Crooks and Curley’s wife all were lonely and dealt with their loneliness in different ways.
Relationships are an important essence of life. Humans need relationships because we are dependent on each other to survive. Babies need their mothers to feed and nurse them, and friends need each other to support, comfort, sympathize, and understand them. The friendship between George and Lennie outlined the core of Of Mice and Men, and although it’s sometimes idealized and exaggerated throughout the novel, there is no question of its sincerity. Lennie thinks of George as his only friend, his guardian, someone who he can trust and depend on, someone who had accepted him for who he is despite his childlike tendencies. Every time he did something wrong, his only thoughts would be of George’s disapproval. “I done a real bad thing. I shouldn’t have did that. George’ll be mad. An’… he said…. An’ hide in the brush till he come. He’s gonna be mad.” (pg. 92) On the other hand, George thinks of Lennie as a constant source of frustration, and as he frequently mention in the novel, “God, you’re a lot of trouble. I could get along so easy and nice if I didn’t have you on my t...
George and Lennie seemingly contrast each other throughout most of the story, constantly arguing about Lennie’s actions. After the two fight about Lennie needing ketchup for his beans, the author writes, "But I wouldn't eat none, George. I'd leave it all for you. You could cover your beans with it and I wouldn't touch none of it" (12). Lennie’s innocent offer to give up ketchup for his friend, resolving their argument, also establishes that extending acts of friendship is an astounding way to overcome differences. Certainly one must not only be kind in order to gain acceptance, but persistent in attempts to establish friendship. Lennie is another perfect example of this when he befriends Crooks: “Lennie’s disarming smile defeated him. ‘Come on in and set a while,’ Crooks said. ‘ ‘Long as you won’t get out and leave me alone, you might as well set down.’ His tone was a little more friendly” (69). Analogous to Lennie’s tenacious attempts to win Crooks’ trust, one must be resolute in order to accept those with differences. Constant acts of friendship show compassion and clear purpose in actions, ridding any stereotypes or misunderstandings in a
Whether or not the men have a stable friendship with others determines some of their actions. George and Lennie’s friendship is very strong, so they base off their actions on the other persons. The have been staying together for many years. The two moving around and living together is great for Lennie, because due to
The power of novels can allow readers to learn significant lessons about humanity and life experiences. Steinbeck’s novel “Of Mice and Men” set in Americas great depression of the 1930’s, explores the human need for company and the impact of loneliness. This is shown through the characters experiences of power and powerlessness on a barley ranch in California. Steinbeck shows his readers the need for compassion in times of cruelty, emphasised by the desperation of the era which the novel is set.

The bond between two people can be very simple and at the same time very complicated. Take Lennie and George for example from Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Friendship is the bond between people who hold mutual affection for each other; friendly disposition or feeling for another; the bond of friends. Throughout this novella Steinbeck shows many themes of friendship between the two, the strongest ones demonstrated are father-son, brotherly, and love-hate.
Steinbeck’s point in exploring these relationships is to teach people about how the isolation drives people into forging relationships with each other. While it should be obvious that a marriage would result in a much more loving and caring relationship, in this story, that is not the case. As shown, Curley and his wife’s relationship is nothing but stressful and a burden on both of them. Neither people are helped at all by the marriage, as both of them are still very lonely, even together. However, the most unlikely of connections, George and Lennie’s, perseveres and is truly a mutualistic relationship. While their relationship is not fully of platonic love, it is clear that both men do care for each other. Steinbeck wanted to teach us that people need each other. We as humans crave social interactions and the feeling of being respected and wanted. Sometimes, conventional relationships - like those of husband and wife - do not provide that, while unconventional relationships can truly have
The famed nurses study from Harvard found “Not having a close friend is as detrimental to your health as smoking.” Lennie and George’s friendship is necessary to keep the better for each other.
