Through difficulty and many obstacles, the four friends appear to actually improve and strengthen their bond by working together in order to find freedom from the intimidating wilderness in Maine. Wini and her friends realize throughout the novel that the most important thing is to stay together and not turn against one another. At the most rough times one must need their friends to be with them, “A bound in our lostness as we ever were as friends, we blundered through the living darkness as soundlessly as we could, but it was hard to believe that every footfall, every unintentional snap of branch or rustle of lead didn’t wake the world and call the hounds of hell down upon us” (Ferenick, pg. 181). the four women are nothing but scared and constantly think of the negativity. Normally, what comes to their mind every minute is that they are never getting out of the forest, however; Wini and her friend Sandra continue to persuade their other two friends, Rachel and Pia that a positive mindset will make everything better. Unfortunately, nothing seems to get better as they go further into the woods. The only thing that keeps them calm is that they’re all together as a group and will figure this situation out as a group as well. The friendship Wini and her friends have in The River at Night is very similar to the friendship Teddy in The Fall of a City has with his paper dolls. He thinks of the two-dimensional bodies scissored from paper as his true friends because at home he has absolutely nothing to do despite arguing with his aunt and uncle. He trusts his friends just as much as Wini does with hers. The bond between Wini and her three best friends has developed into an unbreakable connection all through their frightening adventure. This journey has truly put the four friends to test on how strong and secure their bond genuinely is and how efficient their survival skills can be. Although arguments and disagreements occur on the way, the women never fully turn their backs on each other. At times they most definitely did not like one another; however the four friends did not let their emotions get the best of them, “We sat huddled together, quaking and whimpering, arms around each other, legs pressed together, like one four-headed creature” (Ferencik, pg. 156). They are aware that the negativity and the antagonisms will only break them apart. Working together and having bright thoughts is the only way the four can escape the nature staying as friends.
Each one of the women has their individual survival skills and combines both their friendship as well as durability to reinforce their bond. Throughout the novel, it is mainly Rachel and Pia who get into small fights and quarrels but it is repeatedly Wini and Sandra who convince them that everything will be okay and that they all must think clearly without doubts because that’s what is truly bringing them all down. In The River at Night, there is a lot of nature and wilderness present. Generally in personification, the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman is required and in this novel, there is personification when Erica Ferencik describes the river as “murmuring, turning, and dreaming”, she has given a river human characteristics. The reason why Wini has chosen to contribute coming on this trip with her girlfriends is because she has been through a lot and thought this would be an excellent distraction from her personal problems. Although, Wini does not know that leaving her personal issues behind would cause more problems to arise between her and her friends. Wini has many external conflicts among her three friends in this …show more content…
novel. There are times when the four do not agree on one specific idea and that is where the fights appear to begin. Arguments happen and normally that would be the reason why friends spilt apart however it is quite different in their case. The fights that happen in between Wini and her friends result in them developing as characters throughout the book and have them realize how important their friendship really is and not worth it being broken over a small selfish argument.
Along with such disagreements that the four friends experience, they all know that there is nothing more significant than having hope, trust, and faith. Wini and her friends are aware that without hope and faith, they will get nowhere, “I surveyed our exhausted, grimy faces and remembered someone telling me that hope is always the last thing to die” (Ferencik, pg. 160). Losing faith in loved ones will never leave one to success, having trust and hope is consistently required. In The River at Night, the four friends lose hope and confidence in themselves due to the fact they are hopeless and desperate. There is also a comparison to hope in the poem called Mother to son. In this poem, the mother is telling her son to never give up on things that may seem impossible near the beginning. The poem is about continuing life as it is because sooner or later it will improve. Running away from problems are never the correct solutions and even though others’ lives may seem crystal clear, there are always going to be tacks and stains in
them. This novel by Erica Ferencik is clearly about female friendships and how strong they really are. Normally, it is said that female friendships don’t last as long as male friendships, but, Ferencik proves that stereotypical rule wrong. In the novel, the four women go through some extremely difficult obstacles however their bond only got more secure and forceful. Women are constantly seen as the more fragile and sensitive gender which is completely wrong because in The River at Night, Wini and her three friends use their strength and inner power to overcome any complication that may have arouse, they also prove stereotypes wrong. Eventually the four re-gain their self-confidence and belief once again in the novel. What causes them to find hope again is when they think they find someone in the woods who can be help to them; unfortunately it is the complete opposite. In the woods, the four friends spot a campfire and their instincts have told them to go explore to see if there is someone there to support them. There is a woman named Simone and her mute son named Dean who have been living in the forest for almost their entire lives. They live in an old broken vehicle and roast animals to provide themselves some protein. In the course of time, the four women find out from the young boy that his mother wants him to kill them for their own use. This is when Wini and her friends begin to panic and want to get far away from Simone as it seems they were invading her privacy. Simone did not like the idea of the women telling her secret of living in the woods to everyone out in the city once they got out of the forest, so the only way she can prevent that from occurring is to kill them all. Many hurtful and somber things have happened to Simone herself, which is why she took her son and began her new life out in the wilderness where no one can disturb them, that is until Wini and her friends arrive. For the friends, not many things provided them hope and the capability to trust someone during the trip, however they kept their faith within each other because that is what truly matters. Having trust in friendship bonds is what actually improves ones friendship, if there is no belief or conviction, the bond will only weaken.
The Other Side of the Bridge by Mary Lawson is a book that depicts two different people, that mainly focuses on jealousy, rivalry and the power of obsession over half a century. There are many characters in the novel and they build relationships with one another that eventually become intertwined. The relationships that are built end up having an effect on the character, and contributes something different to his understanding of himself and the decisions he makes. Ian in the novel is an example of that, where the relationships he builds with the others, helps him find who he is as a person and affects the decisions he makes. Specifically through the relationships with Pete, his father, and Jake, he gains something different from each character which proves to be vital to who he is. Without these characters, Ian would be very different, as each character contributed something to Ian’s ultimate understanding of himself.
On July 20, 1958, a doctor by the name of Artemio Bracho contemplated the idea of a World Friendship Day. The World Friendship is a foundation that honors friendship and fellowship among all human beings, regardless of race, color or religion. This day has been recognized in several countries and is used today. Friendship is established on loyalty and being there for your friend in their time of need. In Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson, the protagonist, Isabel, created several relationships with other characters that were constructed on loyalty.
These chapters are trying to teach you that regardless of all the groups of friends out there, don’t feel like you have to be part of any group. For an example in the text it says that “Maddie and Evelyn are at one table and Rosie and her sporty friends are at another table, both groups want Louisa to join their group for breakfast, but she doesn't know what table she should eat at because none of the groups are her type and she doesn’t want to start any drama or arguments with her friends/roommates.” Louisa doesn’t have to feel a part of any of theses groups because she says they are not her type and you don’t have to part of any groups. This example proves that the author did a good job because it’s showing you that it’s okay to be alone sometimes because you don’t always have to be with your friends and groups, also you should wait until there’s a good type for you of groups of friends in life. You should never feel like you have to be part of every single group in life. Another example from the novel that proves the main message is where it says in the text “ Evelyn is very smart, Rosie is sometimes mean, depends what mood she’s in and loves to play sports, Maddie is sometimes negative about little things, and Louisa love's the boarding school ” because everyone has a different personality it’s hard to find the right
"Eventually the watcher joined the river, and there was only one of us. I believe it was the river." The river that Norman Maclean speaks of in A River Runs Through It works as a connection, a tie, holding together the relationships between Norman and his acquaintances in this remote society. Though "It" is never outwardly defined in the novella there is definite evidence "It" is the personality of the people and that the river is running through each individual personality acting as the simple thread connecting this diverse group of people.
It's about sunlight. It's about the special way that dawn spreads out on a river when you know you must cross the river and march into the mountains and do things you are afraid to do. It's about love and memory. It's about sorrow. It's about sisters who never write back and people who never listen.” -pg. 85
By using her optimism she is able to try and see the good in any situation, and her hopefulness encourages her to keep going, that one day things will get better. After Fourth Brother tries to send three heavy books on to Ye Ye’s head, Adeline’s hopefulness is obvious. “It’s bound to get better. One day things will be different. Life won’t go on like this forever. I don’t know when, how or what but I’ll come back and rescue you from this. I promise.” Just by thinking these words Adeline was able to comfort herself, a new feeling of optimism for her and Ye Ye. Adeline’s hopefulness also shows at boarding school in Hong Kong, where she is first in the mail line, waiting and hoping for letters that never come. “Never gets any letters either, although she’s always first in line when the mail gets delivered.” Another example of her optimism and hopefulness is when she and her friends are talking on the balcony at the end of term. “More than anything, I yearn to grow up, get out of here and see the world. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the three of us could sail away on one those big boats...?” Adeline shows very clearly that she has a hopeful and optimistic attittude to help get her through the hard
Throughout the novel, loss is one of the main underlying messages. Billie Jo and her father experience countless losses from the beginning to the end. On loss was Billie Jo’s best friend Livie. Livie’s family ends up moving to California at the beginning of the book. Hesse writes, “Livie Killian moved away. I didn’t want her to go. We’d been friends since first grade”(8).
Have you ever made any friends via Facebook, Twitter, or Snapchat that you have never met before? I know I have through Twitter due to having the same interests. Some may say those friends are not really your friends, but virtual ones instead. In the article, “The Limits of Friendships,” by Maria Konnikova, she talks about friendships that are made virtually and in reality. The author argues that the use of social media has hindered friendships and face to face connections within one’s social circle, however, she does not address that they have met their closest support group through social media. Face to face connections help identify who one’s true friends are and they are more realistically made when it is in person rather than over social media, but there Konnikova fails to address the fact that social media has allowed many to connect

“We are not friends because of the laughs we spend, but the tears we save.” This line is a fragment of the short poem, “A Poem of Friendship” by Nikki Giovanni. The significance is that the friendship that Nikki and her unknown friend had was not just one filled with happiness and smiles. It was also one where they helped each other through hard times where tears would have been shed had it not been for their friendship. Nikki Giovanni is a very popular poet whose fame started in the mid 1960’s. Her poems mostly consist of personal experiences between her and friends, family, and various people. She has had many relationships and experiences in her life, from elementary school crushes to friendships long since past; she has dealt with the loss of a loved one and the realization that she is not an easy woman to love because of her brazen, stubborn personality and yet, she still smiles.
The daughter alludes to an idea that her mother was also judged harshly and made to feel ashamed. By the daughters ability to see through her mothers flaws and recognize that she was as wounded as the child was, there is sense of freedom for both when the daughter find her true self. Line such as “your nightmare of weakness,” and I learned from you to define myself through your denials,” present the idea that the mother was never able to defeat those that held her captive or she denied her chance to break free. The daughter moments of personal epiphany is a victory with the mother because it breaks a chain of self-loathing or hatred. There is pride and love for the women they truly were and is to be celebrated for mother and daughter.
...ng the underlying theme that drives the story and the movie, propels the reader and viewer to rekindle the desire to hope above all else because hope is all one has in devastating as well as dire needs. Hope overcomes despair, permits others to see your “inner light” to develop integrity which connects with honesty and trust. Hope is the inspiration to continue to live regardless of the circumstances. Red may have narrated; “Let me tell you something my friend. Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.” But, Andy Dufresne states it best: “Get busy living, or get busy dying.”
No matter how bad things may seem, there is always hope for things to ameliorate. When people believe that the future will be promising, they can have something to look forward to as opposed to dwelling on the past or the problems of the present. This hope can give a person a positive outlook on life and motivate him or her to look past what is happening in the present. In the poems “Hope is the Thing with Feathers” by Emily Dickinson and “The Darkling Thrush” by Thomas Hardy, they both convey similar messages about hope. Both works display the theme of hope being present at all times no matter how bad things may seem and is a consistent option for anyone in need of help.
Throughout The Color Purple, Alice Walker conveys the importance and the power of female friendship in all forms. It shapes and forms the strong bond of female companionship as means of refuge from oppression, male dominance and a world full of violence perpetrated against woman which the female protagonists wish to break free from. Walker constantly reminds the reader of the gruelling pursuit of identity that all are in search for, both in Africa and America; for females to gain equal recognition as individuals who deserve fair and just treatment in a patriarchal society where as Albert states “Men suppose to wear the pants" in soceity. In conclusion, not only leading Celies personal growth as independent woman but also to the extraordinary establishment of a female solidarity network within the novel. It is this network of female friends that wages a potent challenge to dominate over the patriarchal structure in the text.
This book is about losing a loved one which we can all relate to. The main character says it best when she says, “Who wants to know that the person you love and need the most can just vanish forever” This shows that we can relate to this book, for when we have lost somebody we have all thought about how they won’t be there when we need them. It is hard when you experience the death of someone you love like Lennie has, and coming to terms with the death is hardest part. This novel also represents the importance of finding the positives in life after you have lost somebody. Lennie says, “… if you’re someone who knows the worst thing can happen at any time, aren’t you also someone who knows the best thing can happen at any time too?” This proves that while we may be upset with an unexpected death and feel alone that there is always a positive side to it. After something terrible happens we often think it can not possibly get worse, so we must believe that if we are at the bottom of life there is only one way to go and that is
