Frida Kahlo was a Mexican self-portrait artist. She was born on July 6th 1907, in Coyocoán, Mexico City, Mexico. She began painting after she was severely injured in a bus accident. She exhibited her paintings in Paris and Mexico. She later became politically active. She is an outstanding feminist icon and she is greatly admired. Frida helped women gain the respect they have today.
In Frida’s early life, she lived in a house referred to as the “Blue House”. Her father, Wilhelm A.K.A. Guillermo was a German photographer who married her mother Matilde after he immigrated to Mexico. Frida has two older sisters, Matilde and Adriana. She also has a younger sister, whose name is Cristina. When she was a very young child, she contracted polio. She successfully recovered from polio but a permanent limp remained in her right leg. Her recovery was greatly based on her father’s encouragement for her to play sports. This was very uncommon motives for a woman of this time, and this made Frida stand out. …show more content…

She was one of the only female students in the entire school. She became known for her jovial spirit. She also stood out for her love of traditional and colorful clothes and jewelry. She met her husband Rivera for the first time in this school. Rivera was working on a project in her school when they met. With her boyfriend of the time, Kahlo was injured on a bus. The bus collided with a streetcar. Kahlo was impaled by a steel handrail, which entered her hip and exited the other side. Kahlo began painting a lot during her recovery, and she finished her self-portrait the following year. Kahlo joined the Young Communist League and the Mexican Communist
