Frida Kahlo was, and still is, often referred to as one of the most influential women in the art scene. However, to me she is more than just a painter. She is someone I can relate to and who greatly inspires me. The way she was unapologetic when it came to her heritage and how she had refused to allow personal tragedy to keep her down is what really makes me look up to her. Those reasons are what really drew me in and made me want to learn more about her. Since first learning of her in eighth grade and about her experiences, I have started to try hard to embody these specific aspects throughout my everyday life.
The way Frida Kahlo had not shied away from her heritage in the slightest is what has helped me start to do the same. Like her,

Frida Kahlo was an amazing woman whose many tragedies influenced her to put her stories into her paintings. She was born in July 6th 1907 to a Mexican Roman Catholic mother who was of Indian and Spanish decent and a German photographer father. Frida had three sisters, Mitilde and Adriana, who were older and Christina who was younger. She learned about Mexican history, art and architecture by looking at her father’s photography. When Frida was six she got polio and it was a long time before she would heal completely. After surviving polio, Frida’s right leg became weak and thin, so her father encouraged her to play sports to help her.
In Frida Kahlo’s movie Frida was able to break the cultural determinations that were place for women to follow during her period. Frida was able to break from the chains by challenging Mexican society norms. Her behavior defied every role given to women by society. From the start she was rebel and determined. Throughout the film actions like sneaking a boy into her house and being sexually active before getting married was not very acceptable in society and not well seen.
Cindy Sherman and Frida Kahlo were pioneers when it came to artistic creativity and relating to femininity. Without these two female self-portraiture artists, art wouldn’t be what it is today. They had definite differences when it came to their style, but in the end when it came to the purpose they both wanted to use stylistic conventions during their time and they also wanted to change those conventions. Whether it was the background or the character portrayed they have their own defined style and that makes these two women memorable artists.
Frida Kahlo’s life was one of tragedy and loss; her paintings are representations of how she was feeling and what she was thinking. I think that Frida's life greatly influenced her paintings. Most of her paintings have some form of nature or wildlife featured in them. Not only did she display a theme of nature, she also liked to wear indian women clothing. Her style is realistic and lifelike. She has many paintings that fall into the categories of symbolism, surrealism, cubism, modern art, and magical realism. Not only that, a lot of her paintings have herself in them. The color use of Frida Kahlo is very lifelike, she uses natural colors; she doesn't use many bright colors. She uses many primary colors. I have also noticed that a few of her paintings exhibit monkeys. Her paintings remind me of the Mexican culture that I studied in my two year Spanish class. Artemisia’s paintings are very feministic. I believe that Artemisia put her life into her paintings as well. The paintings of Artemisia Gentileschi that I have seen all have women displayed in them; whether they are her, or other women. I would recognize her paintings because almost all of her artwork features a woman reaching out for something. Women in these paintings have a facial expression, that is the same in almost all of her works. Artemisia had very lifelike paintings, they were beautiful but also displayed a tense mood. The artists that created these works of art were influenced by a multitude of factors including personal issues, politics, and other art movements. Frida Kahlo and Vincent van Gogh, two wildly popular artists, have left behind artwork, that to this day, influences and fascinates people around the world. Their painting styles and personal lives are vastly different, but both artists managed to capture the emotions that they were feeling and used them to create artwork.

Frida Kahlo was born in “The Blue House” in Coyocan, Mexico, which was in the outskirts of Mexico, on July, 6, 1907. Frida is the 3rd of 4 daughters to be born in her family. Frida grew up a very hard life. At the age of six, Frida was diagnosed with Polio disease. This made using her right leg very difficult. Her leg became very skinny and her foot stopped growing. She does many exercises to help make her leg stronger but none of them help to much. When she begins school she is bullied and made fun of because of her leg and nicknamed “Peg-leg Frida”.

Each portrait conveys deep emotion and meaning, and carries a story Kahlo has experienced. Her self-portraits are very personal, and overall show just how tragic her life has been.
