Thoughts on memory is forever changing. Freud believed that memory was a mental process formed by the id, ego, and superego. With the Id running with his idea of the pleasure principle. The pleasure principle runs with everything, as if you were a child and want all the candy but you can’t without being sick. The Id is on the unconscious level, the client does not know what lies on this level of the consciousness. The ego is the balance between the id and superego. The ego is the balance between candy and too much candy. The ego is preconscious knowing, the balance between right and wrong. The super ego is the reality principle in full force, nothing comes without a price. While the superego would say no candy because you’re going to get sick anyway. He believed that everything was ruled by the pleasure principle, but humans also had to rely on the reality principle, and mental processes where to help a person find a happy medium. Freud was a pioneer in the field of psychology for his various theories. Arguably Freud’s most important contribution to the field of psychology is his psychodynamic theory. The studies of the differences in the conscious and subconscious within what we think and what we do. Freud’s theories may be outdated having been developed in the early twentieth century, but concerning his psychodynamic theory it has been the foundation for many more psychologist to develop their own theories and ideas. Thus, making the study of Freud’s psychodynamic theory imperative for us as a society to study for future generations.

In addition to Freud’s stages of development his best-known concepts are those of the id, ego, and superego (Crain, p. 268). The id personality called ‘the unconscious” is the personality that focuses on maximizing pleasure and minimizing pain through reflexes and drives such as hunger or bladder tensions (Crain, pp. 268-269). Henry Molaison is living with a severe epilepsy where he need to undergo a surgery as medications were no longer gave him effects for his disease. So, his surgeon William Beecher Scoville suction out both of his hippocampus and when he got recovered from the surgery, his doctor realised that, Henry was having amnesia and seek him for another doctor. What confusing the doctors is that, even though the surgery was a success where Henry seizures decreasing; he is now facing dense memory loss. Then, once it was realized that the hippocampus plays a crucial roles for memory; the surgery of removing hippocampus was then banned for all and this brings to deep study of memory and hippocampus.
Sigmund Freud created strong theories in science and medicine that are still studied today. Freud was a neurologist who proposed many distinctive theories in psychiatry, all based upon the method of psychoanalysis. Some of his key concepts include the ego/superego/id, free association, trauma/fantasy, dream interpretation, and jokes and the unconscious. “Freud remained a determinist throughout his life, believing that all vital phenomena, including psychological phenomena like thoughts, feelings and phantasies, are rigidly determined by the principle of cause and effect” (Storr, 1989, p. 2). Through the discussion of those central concepts, Freud’s theory of psychoanalysis becomes clear as to how he construed human character.
Sigmund Freud and Erik Erikson are two theorists that “believed the major determinants of personality are not conscious…[and] are the result of conflict through the various stages of development” (Cloninger 2013). Both theorists described different stages a person goes through during development. Erikson’s psychosocial stages of development were greatly influenced by Freud’s psychosexual stages of development. “Erikson’s theory builds on that of Freud, presuming hat biology provides the motivation of personality through the psychosexual stages that Freud outlined. However biological sexual energy is not the only consideration.” (Cloninger 2013). Rather than focusing on a person’s libido, also known as the person’s sexual-psychic energy, as the driving force behind personality, Erikson described how social influences could have an affect on a person’s personality.
It is driven by the reality principle by attempting to rationalize the situation and acts accordingly in order to achieve satisfaction while doing it in a socially acceptable manner. The ego is ‘like a man on horseback, who has to hold in check the superior strength of the horse’ (Freud, 1923). Developmental psychology is an area of research dedicated to the understanding of child-development. Throughout history many theories have been used to attempt to explain the complex process. Two of those theorists, Freud and Erikson, were instrumental in creating a foundation for child-psychology to build on. From a Freudian perspective, human development is centered on psychosexual theory. Psychosexual theory indicates that maturation of the sex drives underlies stages of personality development. Alternatively, Erikson is considered a neo-freudian scholar who developed psychosocial theory. In Erikson models there are eight major conflicts that occur during the course of an individual’s life.

In Civilization and its Discontents, the Austrian psychiatrist, Sigmund Freud, diagnosed three sources of human discontent, “the superior power of nature, the feebleness of our own bodies and the inadequacy of the regulations which adjust the mutual relationships of human beings in the family, the state and society” (Citation).
