Reflecting back on all the experiences I have gained in Freshman Seminar, I have discovered many aspects of myself that I wouldn’t have noticed if it weren’t for this class. Through all the PCE Projects, reflections, class service project, outing, and group discussions, I have learned valuable information about campus life and the history surrounding Oxford College of Emory University. Helping out in the Highland games at the arts and craft center made me happy when children would want to decorate a picture frame or make their own flag. Similarly, PCE Project H reveals that I am person who is organized and structured when it comes to reaching my goals. When making my blueprint of a house, I laid out my goals of wanting to become a pharmaceutical scientist, travel the world, and leave college with a high grade point average. These goals are important to me because I can pursue a career that I am fascinated by, and experience the different cultures in various countries. These goals stem from my core values. My values include family, friends, love, knowledge, responsibility, and respect. Considering my actions and choices regarding certain matters are founded on my values, my values are important because they are the things that matter the most to me. One decision that was made because of my values was my choice to attend Oxford College of Emory University. Since Oxford College of Emory University is a caring, diversified, and respectful community, I felt at home. This college doesn’t have students who stereotype about one’s gender or race, and doesn’t judge one because of their beliefs. Every year, there are thousands of students planning and tracking their goals. Seniors in high school are faced with the tough challenge, while the Juniors are left to worry about another year. Finally, the point comes in a student’s life where they must make one of the most important decisions in their educational lifetime. That choice is, which college to attend, and it is a very scrutinous process. Two of such colleges are the University of Iowa and St. Ambrose University, and although similarities like majors and minors are evident, there are many other differences including student life.
As the semester finally approaches the finish line, I revisit my past work to compare and contrast how this class has developed me into a successful writer at the college level. Throughout the year my writing style has developed and become broader as I have learned how to incorporate more of my personal views as well as reliable, unbiased information. This portfolio is a representation of how many things I have learned along the way while being an English 102 student.
In COL 101 I have learned many new things about college. Since this is my first semester at college I did not really know where everything was. This class really helped me to learn new things about myself, including what resources are available to me, what my plan for the future is, and the many changes I have endured during this course.
As a byproduct of the change in college culture, it will create a “friendlier” environment for first generation. Students need to feel safe rather than out of place. Additionally, prestigious institutions need to take initiative to create new programs that will make college a painless transition for first generation students by implementing new policies such as mentors or clubs. As many colleges and universities have not taken the initiative to help first-generation students, North Carolina State University is one of the few exceptions. As a fellow first generation college student at North Carolina State University, I have reaped many benefits from the different organizations they have around campus. In the Poole College of Management, I was assigned a professional mentor in my future line of work that made the transition into college a better experience for me. After listening to his forums, I was able to use the skills I had learnt from my parents and apply it to college and my study habits benefiting me in countless possibilities. College success has become a most desirable goal. However, many students struggle through college. In fact, according to the Website Ask.com, approximately 15 percent of college students receive a degree. Because I’m willing to earn a degree like many other successful students, I find that college is the stepping stone to my dream goals. I know that college is difficult, but I realize that attaining my dream of a college education will require me to understand the benefits of what I’m learning, to prepare for obstacles, to seek advice, and to create effective and reasonable strategies will help me achieve my goals.
Over the course of this class I have pieced together many things about my own life that before went unnoticed. I am now able to see things in a bit of a different light. Now that I have been introduced to the realm of psychology I understand some of the reasons for behavior around me. I have learned that there is a reason for most everything and a lot of our behaviors and mental processes can be explained through psychology. Studies have been conducted for many years to try and pinpoint the source of our behavior and it is not something that most people think about every day. Having a better understanding of why we operate the way we do will help me to better understand myself and the others around me.
Having the opportunity to receive funds to pay for my college tuition is a societal value that influences my behavior. I come from a country that only the rich can attend college because there is no financial aid or scholarships that can help the poor attend college. However, living in a country where all those opportunities are available, it is impossible to not take advantage of the opportunity. Goldsmith (2013) explains that traditional values are those set by the society where people reside. In my case, receiving funds to pay for my tuition is the traditional value I am experiencing. Another value that influences my decision making is the professional value. I work in a place that most of the staff is professional. Their professionalism influence the way I see education and I want to live up to those standards.
Now that I have completed this course, I can see the course applying to my ministry in the following ways so that I may understand the text and the different ways of preaching each subject. As a preacher, it is necessary to understand how to explain God’s promise in which he will pour His Spirit upon people in every special way so that every man receives a different gift that he who has ears and hearts will listen to God’s words and come to Him. The most significant things to my ministry are that each theme has four main different parts of teaching such as introduction, Law, Gospel, and application. It is important to understand that our fears, sadness, and suffering are lifted off our shoulders if we put them in the hands of our Father. Our daily lives are affected by these situations, and that is why there are so many who live such hard lives all around the world. That is why it is my job as a minister to explain to them so that they will understand the repentance of their sin and so they can strength their faith in Christ.
My values have changed rapidly as I’ve grown from childhood, to adolescence, and through my teenage years. Many of my core values, the ones I truly live by were instilled in me by my family. I feel the University of Georgia exercises pressure on its students to alter some of their values. Here we are forced at times to change our conceptions of what’s right or wrong. I believe this is due to the pressure we feel to fit in with our peers. Peer pressure is an overpowering force that we deal with every day at the University of Georgia. Our values are ever-changing to find us a place where we feel socially secure at this huge university.
During everyone 's lifetime, there is always something we hold closest to our hearts; it maybe our principles we live by, values, and even our own beliefs. These values matter deeply to me because the kindness, compassion, generosity and forgiveness that I have received has changed my life significantly. It has allowed me to understand others, be appreciative of all efforts big and small and move forward from hardship. The impact of these values in my life motivates me contribute these values to others.
With every fall, a new crop of freshmen journey to college with one word on their mind: change. College is a time when students are told to find themselves, experience a life separate from their parents, and to create new connectionss with friends, professors, roommates and anyone else they find in this entirely new environment. For myself the biggest change was moving from rural DeWitt, Iowa to the bustling city of Providence, Rhode Island. Trading in dirt roads and vast expanses of land devoted to crops for a culinary school by the harbor has brought on many new changes. Even though I have only been here for a few short weeks I can already tell that these changes have improved my life for the better.
Understanding who we are as individuals can be a struggle for people throughout life. It can be difficult to comprehend who we are and why we exist. There are daily outside influences that help create who we are and what our values are. Values play a significant role in our lives. They shape the choices we make and reveal a big part of our identity to the world. Some values may be more important than others, but they still manage to influence our lives in one way or another, whether we know it or not. Values can range from a tangible item to an idea that has influenced us to stand by and remember those values. The values we hold with the highest importance act as a guide and help us prioritize our purpose and goals in our daily life. My family has taught me a list of values and traits that have helped me become a well-rounded individual. I value my family more than anything because most of my core inner values have started from their teachings at one point or another. My top values that I have developed from my family are dedication, honesty, and wisdom. I will discuss who I am in terms of the important values that shape my personal belief system and decision making framework that, in essence, describes the direction of my life.
During this College Composition course, I came across numerous obstacles and educational involvements. Every factor of this course contributed to my overall learning experience. For starters, we often read out of our textbooks, “The Little Seagull Handbook” and “They Say I Say”. These books helped showcase proper writing techniques. In addition, we would have class discussions that everyone would participate in. This opened my eyes to different viewpoints that could influence my writing. I recall one class we had a debate over a topic and everyone had to choose a side to argue. Then when we wrote argument essays, even though they were on a different topic, it helped me view my topic in different ways. Lastly, the most helpful to my writing was peer review. We were told to read our paper out loud to our partner. Although personally I am quiet and dislike reading out loud, I found this very helpful. Instantly, my partner and I could find grammar mistakes that one may not pick up on while reading silently. Then we could also talk about other possible revisions for my paper. For every paper, we would have conferences with the professor. This was effective as well to have a professional giving corrections and ideas. When we would get back our graded rubrics on the assignments we completed, the instructor would leave comments to
