Freedom Writers Theme

“No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin or his background or his religion. People learn to hate, and if they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” This quote is from Nelson Mandela and the quote describes the discrimination in the film The Freedom Writers directed by Richard LaGravenese. The movie is a drama, crime, inspirational, and biography. The Freedom writers movie is about a young and ambitious teacher is trying to understand her troubled students. Most of her students are in different gangs, race, culture, and backgrounds. Most of the school's faculty have or are giving up on the restless students. The confused new teacher

gives her students a notebook to write about their lives, families, community, or anything. The students gave her their trust and permission to read their own notebooks. The director wants us to learn how to overcome adversity.
Early in the movie, Erin Gruwell the teacher goes to dinner her with her husband and her father. Her father tells her that she is so smart that she could be running a huge business instead of teaching. He keeps on agitating her by saying negative stuff about her students and job. This scene goes along with the theme by showing that Mrs. Gruwell can overcome her dad complaining about her job and telling her that she can't do it. In the end, she does what her father said she couldn't.

Another scene that the movie shows it’s theme is when Eva Benitez had to testify against her own boyfriend. When she was on the stand she looked around the courtroom. She looked at the plaintiff and his family. She looked at her classmate, who was a close friend to the victim of the murder. Finally she looked at the defendant. She looked at her boyfriend and her gang. Her boyfriend was the murderer and told Eva to blame the plaintiff. She told the jury and the judge that her boyfriend did it. This scene describes the theme by showing that she went against her gang and did the right thing.
The final scene that describes the theme is when Mrs.

Gruwell tries to move up with her students to their junior and senior high school English teacher. Mrs. Gruwell get an unexpected meaning with a school board member after a meeting with the school’s principal. Margaret Campbell is trying to convince everyone that she shouldn't be able to move on with her students because it's not fair to the other teachers who were there longer than Mrs. Gruwell. Mrs. Gruwell gave her testimony for she can stay with her group of students onto her student’s junior and senior year. Mrs. Campbell tries to persuade the board that her teaching taticas are impractical and may not every student can learn from her teaching strategy. In the end, the board allows Mrs. Gruwell to continue on with her students. This scene goes with the theme because she rose above the diversity of Mrs. Campbell.

Overcome adversity is a lesson a viewer can learn from the movie The Freedom Writers. Overcoming adversity affects the world in many ways. All around the world people, countries, religions, and organizations overcome adversity. Their adversity can be a ray of things such as gaining money to buy a new church to going against people’s word and doing the right thing. Everyone can rise above adversity, they just have to believe in themselves I think. It may seem impossible, but you can overcome
