My Research paper will be about the recent problems with freedom of speech being limited more and more by rules and regulations on campuses, and more specifically the University of Northern Colorado. The problem with freedom of speech on campuses is that in recent times people believe that their feelings are more important than freedom of speech. The biggest controversy with this topic is that some believe that there should be some limits to freedom of speech on campus while the other opinion is that the campus is made to be a controversial battle ground of opinions and have diverse opinions. The problem that i will specific be addressing is the idea that limits are needed and are not so bad i will be thinking of a future outcome what can happen if we give in just this little amount, how it can escalate into something much worse. The reason that my issue is argumentative because both sides can have reasonable arguments, one being that everyone should be included and people should not offend others, and the other is that people should have debates and diverse opinions even if it may offend others. While they may have a point, we live in the most accepting country in the world, and people shouldn’t be too sensitive. The purpose of this paper is to explore the topic of freedom of speech and free speech zones on college campuses. This paper will answer the questions: Why have so many Universities who protect academic freedom, retreat into fear of freedom? Are school officials afraid of debate and disagreement? Are they trying to keep people (outside the zone) from hearing words that may offend someone? Students’ rights in schools are limited or just taken away. Kids are forced to do whatever the officials at their school, either the principal or the teachers, tell the students to do. Earlier this month in April, student protestors rioted at Berkley University because they did not want certain Conservative guest speakers to be able to give speeches at the university due to some of the speakers comments being inappropriate. According to the nonprofit organization committed to defending civil liberties named The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), "One worrisome trend undermining open discourse in the academy is the increased push by some students and faculty to 'disinvite' speakers with whom they disagree from campus appearances" (The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education). One instance of free speech controversy was when a fraternity member of the University Of Maryland had an email leaked of which he said very derogatory and racist remarks about women and shaming them on their appearance. When this email was leaked it created a widespread of controversy and anger among the country. The difficult part in this was that by popular opinion many would want to expel the student who wrote that email but lawyers suggest that by doing so would violate the student 's constitutional rights to freedom of expression. It has been questioned for years on just about how much academic freedom are teachers and students granted. Academic freedom should be more recognized for students and teachers in schools, it is similar to freedom of speech, it allows faculty and staff to teach what they wish and is supposed to allow students the choice of what courses they would like to take.
