George Washington once stated “If the freedom of speech is taken away, then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.” Like George Washington stated, freedom of speech should be preserved and practiced, many would agree to that, but it should also be regulated so that it does not affect the life of a student in the near future because they say something online and later regret it. Although many debate that placing limits on social media is eliminating a form of how they express themselves, it happens to be negative to the school environment and affects many aspects of school. According to a web source titled “Students Use of Social Media As Free Speech and its Impact on PK-12 Public Schools,” a supreme court ruled that “...rights are limited where disruption and subversion to the good order of schools are at stake.” In other words, freedom of speech should be kept limited to avoid disruption and to keep the school operating in a more orderly manner. Disruption would come into play in the event of a student posting something online and it affecting someone or something during the school day. For instance, if someone posts something negative about a student, that student may continue to think about it all throughout their day and this would cause a disruption in the way that the student is concentrating and it could potentially affect learning for that particular student. Therefore, if social medial is limited these disruption can be avoided and it would help keep school more of a safe and orderly environment. Though, freedom of speech is important and it should be practiced it should be kept to a limit where the school system checks and balances out and no one or anything is being disrupted. Although it is true that it is illegal to prohibit negative comments to be said, this issue is not just about being lawfully correct, but instead exceeds to the point where it is your reputation and trust that could be at stake. It would similarly apply to a student if he or she is posting negative comments about the school. In the future, if a potential employer conducts a background check and views the comments posted on a social media, the individual may not be chosen over another individual seeking the same job. If limits were to be placed on freedom of speech regarding social media, then it could potentially help students in the future by helping them think twice about who sees their comments and if it is the right idea or expression to be shared
