The idea of “freedom for all” is a big theme for the citizens of the United States. With the intention to give people the ability to live their life as they please and minimal interference by others. In return for freedom, people must continue to follow societies laws. Once someone breaks these laws, they may be placed in the prison system and expected to do their time incarcerated. Their time in prison is meant to be a time when they are being rehabilitated and then ready to properly function in society. This total institution leads to the re-socialize inmates by rebuilding their personalities using reward and punishment. Although having the freedom and independence to live a relatively normal and content life is important to people of the United States. However, a growing number of people have mental problems and disorders that affect every aspect of their life and can no longer function in society on their own. Leaving the reality of freedom more as a burden than a privilege. Sherri Sullivan, program Director of Bridgeview Manor, stated that “I see the whole community mental health system as a huge social failure and a huge moral obligation we’re not meeting. She also goes on to say that “a person is going to get a better level of care incarcerated then they are going to get if they live in the community.” Having such a large community of mentally ill shouldn’t go unnoticed or disregarded.
