Search for Inner Peace in Siddhartha Siddhartha had one single goal - to become empty, to become empty of thirst, desire, dreams, pleasure and sorrow - to let the Self die. No longer to be Self, to experience the peace of an emptied heart, to experience pure thought - that was his goal. When all the Self was conquered and dead, when all passions and desires were silent, then the last must awaken, the innermost of Being that is no longer Self - the great secret (14) Siddhartha, according to his actions, was constantly in search for knowledge, regardless of what kind, or what he had to do to obtain it. In the book titled Siddhartha, by Herman Hesse, this is shown to us by Siddhartha's leaving home to join the Samanas, and all the actions leading to his residence alongside the river. Leaving his loving family and home where all loved him, shows us that Siddhartha not only knows what he wants but will do anything to attain it. As described on pages 10 through 12, Siddhartha did not leave his father's chambers until he had gotten his way, until his father had submitted to Siddhartha's wishes and agreed to let him leave home to join the Samanas. This stubbornness, this patience with people and situations is also a large part of Siddhartha's character. It enables him to out wait anyone or anything, which teaches him how to do without and also helps him through his time with the Samanas. "Siddhartha learned a great deal from the Samanas he learned many ways of losing the Self" (15). Despite the knowledge he acquired, Siddhartha realized that it was only " . . . a temporary palliative against the pain and folly of life" (17). And with this, his next decision was to leave the Samanas and go in search of the Buddha in order to learn perhaps something he did not already know. Through this we learn that Siddhartha, having learned all that is possible in one place, moves to another in search for more wisdom in search for the secret of how to obtain inner peace, how to find the Self. This action also shows his change by showing us that Siddhartha no longer has the patience to stick to certain routines as he did when he was at home in his youth. Finding the Buddha in a garden, Siddhartha and Govinda spend an evening and afternoon in the " . . . Jetavana grove" listening to the teachings of the Buddha. Although what he has to say is all important and thought to be flawless by all, Siddhartha finds that the Buddha's " . . . doctrine of rising above the world, of salvation, has a small gap. [And] through this small break, the eternal and single world law [which the Buddha preaches] breaks down again" (32-3). This realization that teachings are not flawless shows that Siddhartha has started thinking on his own. He no longer practices routines of cleansing or chants verses in order to obtain a moment of inner peace. Once again, Siddhartha renews his journey, leaving Govinda and the Illustrious One behind, believing that no one finds salvation through teachings. Siddhartha was a deep thinker. He had found a flaw with the flawless teachings of the Buddha. He had realized that he would never attain inner peace through others teachings, but that he alone had to seek it. And this is what he did, stopping next for a lesson in love from the beautiful courtesan, Kamala. Because of this experience, he shed his Samana robes and became a merchant. He gambled and acquired riches all for the love of a beautiful woman. As the years passed, Siddhartha's soul became corrupted with characteristics of ordinary people. He relied on luxury now, when before he could have fasted or begged for his food. His goals were lost and forgotten until a dream one night awakened him and " . . . overwhelmed [him with] a feeling of great sadness" (82). Siddhartha, realizing he had lost his path, now decided it was time to get back on it. This stubbornness, as mentioned before, now helps him carry out his newly found goal., also making his parting from Kamala a lighter burden. His soul had been corrupted. His goals had been lost. Now Siddhartha had to start his search anew, but the beginnings of the ability to love another person were now implanted in his heart. As he reached the river, Siddhartha was overwhelmed with a feeling " . . . of desire to let himself go and be submerged in the water. [The] chilly emptiness in the water reflected the terrible emptiness of his soul" (88). Siddhartha was in a terrible state. After years of riches and luxury, he had cast it all aside in order to find a place for spiritual renewal. In this quest for the inner Self, Siddhartha had now reached this place: the river. "[He] sank down at the foot of the cocoanut tree, overcome by fatigue. Murmuring Om, he laid his head on the tree roots and sank into a deep sleep" (90). After awakening, Siddhartha chose to stay with the ferryman Vasudeva, who had been a great listener. From this ferryman he learned how to listen to the river and how to interpret what it was saying. Siddhartha had thrown away his previous life of wealth for the life of a ferryman, a life of poverty. But Siddhartha knew that from the river his enlightenment would come. His prediction was correct. When Govinda returned from a pilgrimage, he stopped by the river and waited for the ferryman to carry him across. He had recognized the peace on Siddhartha's face, the peace of one who had found the secret. And indeed Siddhartha had. Through his quest for the inner Self in Hesse's novel, Siddhartha had given up many things, made many sacrifices in order to further his knowledge. He was always moving along, never stopping in one place permanently. His quest was never ending until the river had taught him what he needed to know. Hesse, in a way, shows us that only through sacrifice will someone gain what he is looking for. He shows us that life is not given to one on a platter, but needs to be looked for in order to be found. Siddhartha, through his departure from home and the Samanas, his realization that not even the Buddha was perfect in his teachings, his abandonment of Kamala, and finally through his decision to stay and learn from Vasudeva, shows us that he had spent his whole life in search of something that was missing, his peace. Although Siddhartha felt dissatisfied with his stay with the Samanas, in reflection there were a lot of things that he took from his experience with them. He mastered the art of self-denial and many ways of losing the Self, which was very important. He became patient enough to wait for anything and learned to live without food or any other necessities. Siddhartha makes his first significant step towards attaining Nirvana when he leaves the Brahmins to live with the Samanas. Although he could never truly attain Nirvana with the Samanas, the major step is that he began to question his method to attain enlightenment.
When Siddhartha talks to Kamala she tells him that she is a courtesan and Siddhartha wants to learn from her how to live like the people from the city. Kamala taught him many things one of the most important ones was that she taught him how to act like a rich man. Teaching him to act like like a rich man was essential to him reaching enlightenment. If this never happened he wouldn’t have gone into samsara. He never would have experienced the suicidal thoughts that led him to the river and ultimately not reaching enlightenment. Years after Siddhartha left the city Kamala and Siddhartha meet again only this time she has a his son. After she dies Siddhartha tries to raise his son the best he can but his son is too stubborn. The feeling Siddhartha gets after his son leaves he can't find anywhere else and this is one of the last things that Siddhartha needed to achieve enlightenment. Siddhartha is a much respected son of a Brahmin who lives with his father in ancient India. Everyone in their town expects Siddhartha to act like his father and become successful. Although he lives a very high quality life, Siddhartha is dissatisfied and along with his best friend Govinda- wants nothing more than to join the group of wandering ascetics called Samana’s. This group starves themselves, travels almost naked and must beg for the food they survive on. This group of people believes that to achieve enlightenment and self-actualization: body image, health, physical and material desires must be thrown away. Although this is the life Siddhartha wished for himself, he soon discovers that it is not the right choice for him. Near desolation, Siddhartha happens upon a river where he hears a strange sound. This sound signifies the beginning of the life he was born to live – the beginning of his true self. Hesse uses many literary devices to assure Siddhartha’s goal of self-actualization and creates a proper path for that success.
Siddhartha’s childhood friend, Govinda, educated him about the importance of choosing a path in his own life. Govinda had always been a step behind Siddhartha, following every decision he made. The one time he stepped out on his own, to accept the Buddha, he was merely following the path of thousands of others. Siddhartha saw this and he learned that he had to listen to himself even if he wound up making a wrong decision. Meeting with Govinda at the end of the novel reinforced his thought that one had to have experience in order to attain Nirvana -- not someone else’s knowledge. After following Gotama for years Govinda still hadn’t reached peace although Siddhartha had. Siddhartha had done things many would consider wrong and immoral and yet he reached something that many others wanted so desperately because he had experience.
Finally Siddartha realized that everything that fulfilled his desires was all illusion. In the end he became a ferryman and the realization of what life was all about hit him; everything revolves around everything else and one must live life and enjoy it. Realization of himself came in two stages, the first was when he left Gotama, coming to the river on page 41 and 42. He realized that he had always tried to follow after the ways and in the paths of others, but now he needed to follow his desires and to just live life. The second time Siddartha was enlightened he was sitting by the same river with Vasudeva, on page 136 and 137, he realized that he must not fight against his destiny.
Frequent allusions to the river correspond w/ Siddhartha's infinite thoughts of Unity and his initial plans to strive for it. Siddhartha has a number of specific goals during the course of this novel, but in no way does this detract from the bare nature of his ultimate goal. The accomplishment of specific goals was an important part of the progression approaching his absolute state of Unity.
While it seems as if Siddhartha’s early stages of following the teachings of others and immersing himself in material goods did not help Siddhartha on his quest, Siddhartha views these stages in a positive way. “I experienced by observing my own body and my own soul that I sorely needed sin, sorely needed concupiscence, needed greed, vanity… and to love it and be happy to belong to it.” (120). Siddhartha states how he needed sin, vanity, and all of these feelings to realize how corrupt his view of enlightenment was. Siddhartha understands, through viewing his own body and soul, that he needs to accept the world he lives in for what it is, and learn to love it. This flaw that Siddhartha has throughout much of the novel is crucial, as Hesse is able to display how wisdom can only be achieved by looking within the self, not through the words or doctrines of others.
During this period-the realm of the mind, Siddhartha actively sets about letting the self die, escaping his Self. This attempt reaches its most concentrated form during his stay with the ascetic Samanas, during which he discards all material possessions and tries further to flee his own body and control his other needs. This is shown when he says, "He killed his senses, he killed his memory, he slipped out of his Self in a thousand different forms." S...
Through out the novel Siddhartha had constantly taken risks that he believed would lead him to nirvana. He would take these risks even if it meant leaving his family, his best friend, and having to live as a poor man searching for himself. Siddhartha has many teachers during his journey. Although he had many teachers he believed that with or without them he would have learned what he needed to learn to obtain nirvana.
Eventually, Siddhartha realizes the error of his ways and leaves Kamala, for a new way of life, but he leaves behind an unborn child. He leaves all his riches and Kamaswami, which was very desperate to find him at the time of his “disappearance.” Siddhartha had reached a stage in his life where he thought there was no meaning, he’s been on the trek for knowledge all his life but he had not attained satisfaction. He wanted to die. “With a distorted countenance he stared into the water…soul suddenly awakened and he recognized the folly of his action.” (89) He became so lost and distressed he did not see a path for him in the world, but then he met the river. This is where he finally reaches his Nirvana; through further scrutiny and under the guidance of Vasudeva, he becomes cognizant of the flow of the world. “The river knows everything…you will learn the other thing too.” (105) Vasudeva is a man that his lived on the river for a long time, and he has learned its ways. The river is a cycle, and everything depends on it. Animals, plants, and even humans need rivers to survive. Most ancient civilizations were based on river banks, so that they can reap plentiful crops. “Siddhartha tried to listen better…thousands of voices.” (134-135) Siddhartha’s study of the river made him realize who was, who he is, and who he will be. The pictures in the water were his life and all other lives that flowed like rivers, and ultimately began anew with
...n, and all of the enjoyments and lavishes. He becomes entrapped in Samsara, the physical world, characterized by repeated cycles of birth, but finally breaks out of it after twenty years and returns to the river. At the river he joins the simple life of Vasudeva, according to Carl Yung would be considered the wise old man archetype, and for the next twenty years he listens and learns from the river. The river is no longer the divider between the material and spiritual worlds but now it symbolizes a unity in which past, present, and future, all people and their experiences, all features of life flow together. Siddhartha comes to realize that there is no conflict between the spiritual and the material, that all human occurrences are to be accepted, and that the only difference between the ordinary people and the sages is that the sages understand this unity.

Siddhartha, a member of the wealthy Brahmin Caste, is unhappy due to his inability to achieve nirvana. Siddhartha appears to be perfect, possessing the good lucks, charm, and intelligence. This is what all Brahmins wish to possess. The young Brahmin cannot be taught anymore by the Brahmin teachings and rituals, and this makes him discontent. Siddhartha believes that knowledge is required to attain Nirvana and he feels that he is held down by his material possessions. One ritual he becomes disillusioned with is the ablution ritual because “…they did not wash off the sin, they did not heal the spirit's thirst, they did not relieve the fear in his heart.” (5-6).His goal is to achieve enlightenment and he knows it will be difficult with the limited knowledge he has learned from the Brahmins. Siddhartha knows that achieving internal peace will be very hard and while Siddhartha is meditating near the river, he realizes that there must be an efficient method to enlightenment.
