Gertrude and Hamlet
Hamlet's behavior is often explained using Freud's theory of sexual behavior; however the symptoms of bipolar disease explain Hamlet's behavior. Bipolar disease is defined as: "This disease causes symptoms like mood swings with periods of both depression and mania. They have consequent changes in thinking and behavior. Bipolar means the sharing of two poles, or high and low, having to do with mood."(2)
" Hamlet's behavior throughout the play was extremely physical, excessive talkativeness, destructiveness and sometimes grandiosity. These mood characteristics are the effects of bipolar disease." (1) Hamlet is extremely physical in his dealings with Ophelia and Gertrude. His excessive talkativeness is most evident in his soliloquies and his dialogue with his mother. His destructiveness is obvious in his conversation with the ghost; his grandiosity in his sarcasm towards Polonius. Incredibly, Bipolar disease describes Hamlet's behavior very accurately.
When Hamlet’s father was murdered by Claudius, difficulties arose between Hamlet and Gertrude to cope with one another. Hamlet got angry with his mother for remarrying Claudius, his father’s murderer, that he decides to be more rough towards her, simply to gain control over her.
When Hamlet grew up with his father and his mother, they grew up with a disorder known as Bipolar disease. "This is a disease where you think delusional, since it was inherited, passed on from parent to child, Gertrude’s marriage and Hamlet’s reaction to it, could have been the effects of this symptom. Hamlet’s father was "an enabler" who had made it possible for them to function, but now that his father is dead, they found it tough to cope with each other, as the family they once had."(1)
Hamlet became angry for a reason, which was to try to get attention from his mother. This attention came in a sexual form, as shown when he kissed her and when he groped her. With this new bond, he tried to gain further control over his mother, to try and abolish the marriage between her and Claudius. Two quotes to support this are: Queen: "Nay then, I’ll set those to you that can speak." (III;iv) Hamlet: "Come, come, and sit you down; you shall not budge." (III;iv)
This occurs when he tells Gertrude she can’t move, therefore he shows to the viewers he has power over what she says and does. If he cared, he would let her function as she wanted to, and he would support her decision.
Hamlet, Othello, and King Lear similarly experience an "unhooking" (Tompkins) in the eponymous plays. These tragic figures struggle with internal and external femininity: after realizing their emotions and labeling them feminine, they identify women as the source of this negative femininity. Their inability to deal with the female gender in any form destabilizes their masculinity, causing an unhooking/unlatching within them. The origin of Hamlet's psychological decay lies in his anger towards Gertrude and his inability to adjust to her marrying Claudius. From Hamlet's perspective, Gertrude giving herself to a new husband signifies her failure to honor his father and her abandonment of Hamlet; he is figuratively orphaned, and he resents his sole living parent. Additionally, Hamlet's emotional confidence has been significantly damaged: seeing his mother with another man substantiates the possibility that his future wife could leave him for another man and cause him serious pain. This realization compels Hamlet to mask his feelings for Ophelia with madness, a defense mechanism intended to conceal his vulnerability. Ophelia reports that he appeared "with his doublet all unbrac'd,/No hat upon his head, his stockins fouled,/Ungart'red, and down-gyved to his ankle" (2.1.75-7), but as Hamlet is well-aware of the dress code, he likely intended for his behavior to be viewed as unacceptable and thus mad.
As a teenager, Hamlet loses his father to murder, and this event triggers Hamlet to become depressed and hurt deeply. When Gertrude questions her son’s choice to wear all black, Hamlet responds, “For they are actions that a man might play. But I have that within which passeth show, These but the trappings and the suits of woe” telling his mother there is more grief inside him than can be reflected (1.2.87-89). Hamlet tells his mother that all the black clothing he wears, and all the sobbing he does is only a hint of the grief that lays inside of him after his father’s death, and she realizes soon how greatly the death is affecting her son. Gertrude begins to notice her son’s grief taking ahold of him as Hamlet begins to spiral into insanity. Gertrude tells Claudius, “I doubt it is no other but the main: His father’s death and our o'erhasty marriage” about Hamlet’s depression and mental state (2.2.59-60). Soon, family and friends begin to see in Hamlet the depression he is driven to because of his father’s death, and his mother’s hasty remarriage. Less than two months after the King of Denmark died, Gertrude wed Claudius, her late husband’s brother. This marriage caused the grief of Hamlet to spiral even more into rage and depression, as he could not do anything to fix all the problems with the royal family. Hamlet’s anger towards his mother’s remarriage and the death of his father intertwine, creating an even more vengeful young man, as he yells at his mother, “A bloody deed—almost as bad, good mother, as kill a king and marry with his brother” (3.4.34-35). Just trying to deal with the grief of his father’s death, the wedding added to the pressures of Hamlet’s teenage life, and the depression he was already
Hamlet, a Shakespearean character, constantly struggles in a battle with his mind. He leads a very trying life that becomes too much for him to handle. Hamlet experiences hardships so horrible and they affect him so greatly that he is unable escape his dispirited mood. In speaking what he feels, Hamlet reveals his many symptoms of depression, a psychological disorder. While others can move on with life, Hamlet remains in the past. People do not understand his behavior and some just assume he is insane. However, Hamlet is not insane. He only pretends to be mad. Because Hamlet never receives treatment for his disorder, it only gets worse and eventually contributes to his death.
In this study, the authors discuss women 's status in Latin American countries and why they perform so well in their careers, given that socioeconomic and cultural factors could limit their possibilities of achieving higher management positions. Women’s representation at the highest levels of management, especially as executives in the private sector, has remained light. In Latin American nations, cultural machismo and limitations of economic development might seem to brutally restrict women’s access to powerful positions. A common assumption about Latin American countries
Not only did Hamlet contemplates suicide but also suffered from an overwhelming sadness “Neither [his] black clothes, nor [his] dear mother, nor [his] heavy sigh, nor [his] weeping, nor [his] downcast eyes, nor [his] other displays of grief, can show how [he] really feel[s]” (Shakespeare 25). The Prince of Denmark also suffered from a second psychological illness bipolar disorder. He started showing symptoms of this disorder after the ghost of his dead father appeared and told him that it was Hamlet 's own uncle who had poisoned him, and that he must avenge his death. This news left Hamlet unstable he began to second guess himself and the other around him, paranoid he began to think “The Ghost [he] saw maybe the devil, and the devil has the power to assume a pleasing disguise, so [the ghost] maybe taking advantage of [his] weakness and sadness to bring about my damnation” (Shakespeare 133). Among paranoia, massive mood swings and changes in behavior were also symptoms he showed for bipolarism. Becoming extremely rude and inconstance towards his love interest are examples of the changes in behavior and mood swings. at the
The tragedy of Hamlet by William Shakespeare is about Hamlet going insane and reveals his madness through his actions and dialogue. Hamlet remains one of the most discussed literary characters of all time. This is most likely due to the complex nature of Hamlet as a character. In one scene, Hamlet appears happy, and then he is angry in another and melancholy in the next. Hamlet’s madness is a result of his father’s death which was supposedly by the hands of his uncle, Claudius. He has also discovered that this same uncle is marrying his mom. It is expected that Hamlet would be suffering from some emotional issues as result of these catastrophes. Shakespeare uses vivid language, metaphors, and imagery to highlight how Hamlet’s madness influences several important aspects of his life including his relationships and the way he presents himself.
It was Freud himself who, in an essay published in 1905, was the first to try and resolve in psychoanalytical terms the enigma offered by Hamlet’s behaviour. According to Freud, the personal crisis undergone by Hamlet awakens his repressed incestuous and parricidal desires. The disgust which the remarriage of his mother arouses in him, as well as the violent behaviour during their confrontation in the queen’s bedroom, are signs of the jealousy which he constantly experiences, even if unconsciously. The bedroom scene is one example amongst many of Hamlet’s aversion to sexuality, which he more often than not associates with vulgarity and sickness. Despite his violent reactions, he is nonetheless fundamentally incapable of acting, Freud tells us, because he cannot bring himself to avenge himself on the man who has killed his father and taken his place at the side of his mother. These are some pretty strong influences that would make a person nutty don’t you think? Well how about some evidence from the text hunh? Sure no problem! The Ghost's announcement that the father's death is a great example.

Under the new model, licensed banks were authorized to carry out the following types of businesses: commercial banking (with regional, national and international reach); merchant (investment) banking; specialised banking (microfinance, mortgage, non-interest/Islamic banking); and, development finance (Sanusi, 2012). In response to this changing and evolving climate, an attempt to elevate HR’s perceived value to banking business emerged. Banks began to explore innovative strategies to attract professional and highly driven executives; this was in addition to massive manpower development programmes to re-train existing
Infiltration is another minor process in the water cycle. Infiltration is the process of water soaking into the ground and moving about the area into rocks and pore spaces. When water lands on shallow soil, it will move horizontally and vertically through. If the ground is deeper, the water could begin to recharge the groundwater aquifers. If this were to happen, people could make a hole in the ground and begin using it as a water source. There are many factors that impact infiltration such as precipitation intensity, soil characteristics, slope of the ground, and more. The ground can only soak up so much water at one time. The excess water is considered runoff water, which is surface water that runs off the
We barely talked. I was working as much as I could to earn enough to save. Jason wasn’t working and had no intentions to. He moved in with his dad, and set at home every day. I was livid. What kind of Loser had I ended up with? He insisted on going to every appointment with me, though I didn’t want him to. I honestly didn’t want him anywhere around me. At 20 weeks, we found out we were having a little girl. I was halfway there, only 20 weeks to go and I would be a mom. I started trying to work through my resentment against Jason, but I gave up. He was a jerk, and I wasn’t going to put up with him. I had done nothing, but was still the blame of ruining his life. I guess it just took me, to get me pregnant.
I like to travel also to relieve stress. I feel experiencing different scenery and nature increases my feeling of well being. Taking a one day camping trip and hiking through the forest is relaxing. Anything in my opinion near water is also relaxing; the sound of the water alone provides a feeling of calm. Recreational activites like fishing, boating, or just sitting by a fire in the evening. I feel all of these things can relax the mind and decrease stress
One particularly interesting sea creature is the whale shark, formally known as Rhincondon typus it was first discovered in 1828 by Andrew Smith (Rowat 2012). This large fish is found globally in warm tropical oceans and prefers to stay within 200 meters of the ocean’s surface in waters ranging from 4.2 to 28.7 degrees Celsius (Stevens 2006). This creature can be found all across the globe in any warm tropical seas. Aggregations of whale sharks have been seen off the coast of Australia at times, although it is primarily a creature of solitude. Whale sharks are filter feeders that consume plankton as well as small fish and are harmless to humans. The whale shark is a species with a fascinating ecology, life history, behavior, anatomy
