The “Shirtless” Runners
On one of the humid Louisiana evenings, walking around campus, just managing to adapt to the Helter skelter of college life, I just found my day’s Prometheus. Running across the street, I see three guys with bodies that looked like they were molded by Michelangelo himself. These athletes, who are dressed up as much as Tarzan, toil in the sun indifferent to the onlookers passing by. I was confused about my thoughts at that moment. Was I jealous, amazed or inspired? They’ll be giving you a glimpse of their quad muscles flexing like that of a race horse, wearing a pair of running shoes and possibly some music on. If it’s a sunny day, they’ll almost certainly have some shades on. There are many areas around campus one can find a Shirtless runner in action, but most frequently they are found running past the majestic view that Bayou DeSiard has to offer and around the Malone stadium. If you are to spend a few hours on one of these two places, then you are sure to come across a shirtless runner. Whether it is the sweltering heat of the day, the cold chills in the morning or the cool, windy evenings, a shirtless runner has little regard for time or the environment around him. Time is just numbers on their watches for them. So, being a responsible student athlete, they go through a rigorous training regime everyday which gets them quite sweaty which allows or in some cases forces them to go shirtless. Many members of the ULM Cross-country team run shirtless just as a way to stay cool during training. Like Jonathan Jeffcoat, an Atmospheric Sciences junior at ULM who is a member of the Cross Country team explains, “It’s not really about a body image thing. It’s just a way to try to stay cool.” when asked if he felt more confident running shirtless or with a shirt on. Issac Ndirangu, a Marketing freshman at ULM from Kenya who also happens to be in the Cross-country team had a similar view when he stated, “It depends on the weather really. I run shirtless if it’s a hot day. When it’s cold, I usually have a jacket on.” This attitude is shared by quite a few number of shirtless runners most of whom are on the cross country team. Bringing us to the conclusion that being shirtless isn’t that big a part of their identity but rather something that they just
do. Not every shirtless runner subscribes to the same attitude though. There surely is a diversity in this subculture like in any group of individuals. There also happen to be shirtless runners who run shirtless not just because it is more convenient, but also to show their well-crafted abs aligned perfectly, where people usually have a bouncy flab of fat. Just like Lane Perilloux, a Kinesiology senior at ULM, who concedes, “I work hard to have a good body, so I feel good displaying it.” This clearly leads us to believe that not all shirtless runners feel the same about themselves being shirtless. There is also a completely different genre of shirtless runners other than the cross country runners. They are the sportsmen you see at the fields in the cool ULM evenings playing soccer, Frisbee, volleyball and other team sports. They tend to just so involved in the game that they don’t even realize they have gone shirtless. “Human Body is the best picture of the human soul.” This quotation by Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein is the reason why many shirtless runners do what they do. They work hard to have a good body or they have a good body as a side effect of their hard work, but they go shirtless because they feel good about themselves when they are shirtless. These unique ULM residents can add something new to the campus and have the ability to inspire another person with just a glance at their work, just as they inspired me.
The layout of the museum makes it very easy to find works of art from different time periods. Since I have always been fascinated with ancient Greece and Rome, I knew exactly where to start my search. The Indian Triumph of Dionysus is on display directly at the top of the staircase leading up to the second floor. It is surrounded by many other artifacts from ancient Greece and Rome. As your eyes move across the room, catching a glint of gold here and pearly white marble there, it’s very easy to become overwhelmed for a moment. As I reached the top of the stairs, it was evident that the staging of this magnificent piece was carefully planned. The staff of the museum undoubtedly wants this piece seen by each and every visitor. The exhibit itself is well done. In the world of high school running, there are two types of runners: cross country runners and track runners. I am both, as I have been in cross country since seventh grade and track since first grade. I know how it feels to train and compete in both, and I have come to a conclusion that track & field is way better than cross country.
Cross country is not a hard sport, contrary to popular belief. People often think that you have to be born with the stamina needed for running four or five miles at a time. There are so many different things people think is necessary, like running sprints, heavy miles or lifting weights and building strength, but in reality these things are minor. Although being physically fit is idealistic, it is not the most important thing needed to be successful because having a well-balanced, nutritious diet, pacing yourself and setting a strategy, and having the right positive attitude can put you in the shape to be a successful cross country runner.

Endurance running is a rewarding experience that puts to test an athlete’s courage, perseverance and determination. It is a marvelous wonder how the human body, with the proper conditioning and mental focus, could achieve such tasking running distance. Elite runners complete the marathon course in just over 2 hours, while the average runner completes it in about 4.5 hours. It’s difficult to comprehend how someone could run, consistently, for 4.5 hours.The actual marathon is simply a formality as the journey starts the day training begins. The outcome, the day of the marathon, is dependent on how successful the training program was executed. Long distance runners are the biggest advocates of the sport, always convincing others to jump on the training wagon. However, some runners, while they refuse to admit it, ponder if the effects of long distance running could be doing more damage than good. It is true that long distance running is potentially dangerous to the heart; however, research suggests that physician examination, as well as proper mechanics and posture during the training phase would ensure an enjoyable journey towards reaching an endurance goal injury free and would even benefit the heart in the long run.
Running in a girl’s cross country meet isn’t as easy as it sounds, but with a little experience and help it can become a better experience. The first thing everyone does is line up on a spray painted line in the grass. Before the race even starts the race official tells us the rules and counts everyone that is running. He also tells us about any big holes or ditches that we may encounter in our 2 mile journey.

Over many years of evolution the body has evolved and become adaptable to different types of running. For the past several years runners all over the world have been trying to figure out and arguing over the simple question: “Is high mileage training better than low mileage, during training season?” Kenyan’s in Africa have been running unbelievable amounts of mileage for years, and tend to always be in the top field in any race over five thousand meters. While Africans have been leading the fields for years, where do the best US runners end up? Not in the lead pack! Perhaps they are training too hard to be like their Kenyan counterparts. I think a lot of runners believe that if they train like the runners from Kenya that they will have the same results. When in truth they end up running themselves into the ground. Perhaps that is why there are others that think that if they train light and more to their athletic ability level that they will have better results.
Running can improve your mood, as well as physical health, “Running reduces stress by boosting levels of serotonin in your brain and creating a more positive mood. Self-esteem is improved and goals are achieved through running. After running one feels tired but refreshed and energized due to the serotonin released, which is referred to as the “runner’s high”. This runner’s high, somewhat similar to a drug intoxication, causes a euphoria and creates a positive and energized mood, which temporarily regulates anxiety, improves sleep quality, and constructs a better self-image. As well as being mentally advantageous, running is also physically constructive. Like running and swimming, through working the heart muscles and increasing your heart rate running can also improve endurance and cardiovascular health by allowing the blood to pump more powerfully. The Statue of David clearly shows how the Italian Renaissance had evolved their concept of beauty from the Middle Ages. The Middle Ages would have likely dubbed the Statue of David as being ethically or morally incorrect and perhaps stripping away some of the sanctity of the biblical story by placing the emphasis on the man David and his personal experience and physical form, rather than on God and more spiritual matters. Unlike the Middle Ages, the Italian Renaissance did not find the human body offensive at all; rather, during that time, the general consensus was for people to celebrate the body in its naked form for expressing the beauty of the individual and enhancing the religious text to a more personal, experiential level. Indeed, people could sense and relate to the emotions David must have felt during those moments before he went to battle. For instance, the fact that the Statue of David is absolutely naked elicits a feeling of vulnerability before going to battle. Also, a close-up look at David’s face reveals a furrowed brow and tightly pursed lips, and a close-up look at his hands shows large veins indicative of high blood pressure. These tighter focus observations are exemplary of the magnitude of tension and high levels of stress that David had to have felt
