The loss of Kevin Durant will not only effect the Thunder in the immediate future, but will also effect the entire landscape of the franchise. A place like Oklahoma City is not a prime destination for free agents. Of the 30 teams, Oklahoma City would rank near the bottom in terms of places I would want to live, slightly beating out the likes of Milwaukee, Utah, and Denver. Free agents don’t want to play in a boring, mid-western city like Oklahoma City. There only hope is to strike gold in the draft, which they did three years running from 2007-2009, drafting Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden respectively. Although they struck out on Durant, the Celtics have the assets to acquire Durant’s former teammate Westbrook. The Celtics own the 2017 and 2018 Brooklyn Nets first-round pick, which are both likely to be top five picks. Packaging those picks with Isaiah Thomas and a combination of a few other players could (should) be enough to wrangle Westbrook from the Thunder. The 2017 and 2018 draft classes are expected to be two of the strongest classes since the 2003 draft class, which makes this trade even sexier from the Thunder’s point of view. The only potential hiccup of this trade is whether or not Westbrook would re-sign with the Celtics. 2. Los Angeles Lakers Unlike the Celtics, the Lakers don’t have an abundance of draft picks to dangle. For the Lakers to trade for Westbrook they would have to give up their three previous lottery picks in Julius Randle, D’Angelo Russell, and Brandon Ingram, but even then, their offer is nothing compared to the Celtics offer. The Lakers cannot trade their 2018 first-round draft pick because of the NBA’s draft pick trading rules. The pick that would likely accompany these three players would be a 2019 or 2020 pick, which by then would likely not be a lottery
